Clara's Regret

Sirens wailed outside the Grand Emerald Ballroom, their harsh red and blue lights flashing through the floor-to-ceiling windows to paint the panicked faces of the city's elite in bleeding strokes of crimson and azure.

Marcus stumbled back against the tier of champagne flutes, knocking the glass pyramid into a shattering ruin that sprayed crystal shards across the polished marble. Two city detectives in heavy gray coats stepped past the shattered doors, their silver badges glinting under the diamond chandeliers.

"Marcus Vance?" the lead detective barked, his voice cutting through the stunned silence like a razor. "You’re coming with us. Financial fraud, embezzlement of corporate pension funds, and wire tampering. Turn around and put your hands behind your back."

"This is a mistake! A complete fabrication!" Marcus shrieked, his face turning an ugly shade of mottled purple as the heavy steel cuffs snapped onto his wrists with a definitive, mechanical click. "My father's lawyers will tear your entire department apart before midnight! Do you know who I am?"

"We know exactly who you are, Mr. Vance," the second detective replied coldly, hauling the struggling heir toward the exit. "And your father is already being brought in from his estate for questioning."

Ethan stood near the edge of the dais, his cheap tailored suit catching the stark reflection of the flashing police lights. He didn't gloat, nor did he smile. He simply watched with absolute, chilling detachment as the man who had beaten him into a rain-slicked alley just days ago was dragged out in disgrace.

In the back of his mind, the Supreme System chimed continuously, a rapid sequence of crisp digital bells that sounded like falling coins.

Target Marcus Vance neutralized. Malice converted. +1,500 Stat Points added.

Host physical parameters increasing. Muscle density optimized. Reflexes upgraded to Tier 2.

A warm, electric current surged through Ethan’s veins, erasing the last lingering aches of his previous beatings. But before he could savor the sudden rush of power, a soft, trembling gasp drew his attention downward.

Clara stood frozen near the wreckage of the champagne table, her cascading silk gown stained with spilled wine and crushed glass. The diamond necklace around her throat seemed suddenly heavy, a shimmering noose dragging her down as the high-society vultures who had smiled in her face moments ago edged away, leaving her stranded in an island of isolation.

She looked around the empty space beside her, her eyes wide with sheer panic, before they finally locked onto Ethan.

"Ethan..." Clara whispered, her voice cracking as she took a desperate step forward, her manicured fingers trembling violently. "Ethan, please. You saw what happened. He tricked me. Marcus lied to all of us—he promised me stability, he promised me a future, but it was all built on those terrible lies."

Ethan didn't move an inch. He kept his hands comfortably in his pockets, his dark eyes entirely devoid of warmth.

Clara closed the remaining distance, her breathing coming in shallow, ragged gasps as she reached out and grabbed the sleeve of his inexpensive jacket. Her fingers clutched the fabric with frantic desperation, desperate for an anchor in the collapsing world of her own making.

"We can fix this, Ethan," Clara pleaded, a tear finally spilling over her mascara-darkened lashes and cutting a clean path down her powdered cheek. "Remember our apartment? Remember how hard we worked before all of this madness? I was just confused. Pressure from my family, the debt... it wasn't real love. You know my heart was always with you. We can walk out of here together, just like old times."

Ethan looked down at her hand clutching his sleeve, then slowly raised his gaze to meet her tear-filled eyes. There was no anger in his expression. No lingering bitterness, no hidden affection, and certainly no desire for revenge.

There was only a vast, empty void.

"Old times, Clara?" Ethan asked, his voice steady, quiet, and utterly devoid of inflection. "Which old times are you talking about? The night I lay bleeding in the alley behind the club while you drove away in Marcus's car? Or the days when you called me a worthless parasite for not being able to afford your dresses?"

Clara’s breath hitched, her face draining of all remaining color. "I was scared! I made a mistake, Ethan! Everybody makes mistakes! Can't you forgive me? After everything we meant to each other?"

"We meant nothing," Ethan said plainly, gently peeling her trembling fingers away from his jacket sleeve one by one, as if removing a piece of lint. "And forgiveness is for people who matter. You don't."

A sharp intake of breath hissed through Clara's teeth. The desperate, pleading softness in her face vanished for a fraction of a second, replaced by a flash of raw, wounded pride and burning disbelief.

"You cold-hearted bastard," Clara hissed, her voice rising in pitch as the mask finally shattered completely. "After everything I gave you? After all those years I wasted waiting for you to become something, you're just going to throw me away like trash? You think a cheap suit and a stolen audit report make you a man? You're nothing! You'll always be nothing!"

Ding.

The chime in Ethan’s mind rang out with a bell-like clarity that vibrated through his entire skull, sharper and louder than any previous notification.

Host emotional detachment acknowledged. Target Clara Sterling: Bitterness threshold exceeded.

Massive malice conversion initiated. +3,000 Stat Points added.

System synchronization reaching 50%. Unlocking latent skill: Apex Perception.

Ethan felt a sudden, freezing rush flood his mind. The ambient noise of the ballroom—the frantic whispers of the fleeing socialites, the hum of the crystal chandeliers, the distant wail of the police cruisers—suddenly sharpened into hyper-focused clarity. He could hear the rapid thumping of Clara's heart, could track the precise trajectory of every falling droplet of sweat on her forehead.

"You're right, Clara," Ethan murmured, leaning down just enough so that his words were meant for her ears alone. "I am nothing like the man you used to control. And you are about to find out exactly what happens when you have nothing left to trade."

Before Clara could reply, Ethan turned his back on her completely. He didn't look back once as he walked past the shattered glass of the entrance, stepping through the revolving mahogany doors and out into the cool, rain-washed air of the city street.

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cars washed over him as he stepped off the hotel steps, but he didn't flinch. He adjusted the lapels of his jacket, feeling the dense, coiled power humming beneath his skin, and began walking toward the quiet, shadowed avenues of the downtown district.

Behind him, in the hollowed-out splendor of the Grand Emerald Ballroom, Clara let out a choked, broken sob that echoed against the marble walls, her social standing destroyed, her fiancé in handcuffs, and the only man who had ever truly loved her walking away without a backward glance.

Ethan turned a corner into a narrow, dimly lit side street, his boots splashing softly against the wet asphalt. The high-rise towers of the Apex Hotel shrank behind him, replaced by the decaying brick facades and tangled utility wires of the lower wards.

He pulled out his phone, scrolling through the newly updated system interface floating in his field of vision. The point counter glowed with a steady, pulsing blue light.

Available Stat Points: 4,500.

"System," Ethan muttered under his breath, a cold smirk touching his lips as he felt the heavy, menacing gaze of watchers hidden in the shadows above. "Let's see what else this city is hiding from me."

Before the thought could even finish settling in his mind, the air directly above him displaced with a violent, unnatural snap.

A heavy, whistling sound cut through the damp night air. Ethan’s newly upgraded Tier 2 reflexes flared instantly, his body reacting a fraction of a second before his conscious mind could process the threat. He whipped his head to the side, his eyes widening as a three-inch steel throwing dart embedded itself half an inch deep into the brick wall right where his throat had been a moment before, vibrating with a high-pitched hum.

Ethan spun around, dropping into a low, balanced combat stance as his eyes pierced the absolute darkness of the alley's upper fire escape.

Crouched on the rusted iron railing twenty feet above him stood a figure clad in a matte-black tactical bodysuit, their face hidden behind a featureless ceramic mask that reflected the neon glow of a nearby sign. The figure’s hand lingered near their hip, resting casually over a leather holster filled with more lethal projectiles.

"You made quite a mess at the Apex Hotel, mortal," a voice hissed from behind the mask—distorted, metallic, and carrying a strange, ancient resonance that seemed to vibrate directly inside Ethan's eardrums. "The syndicate doesn't care about Marcus Vance. But you stole what belongs to us when you intercepted those audit files."

Ethan didn't blink. He felt the Supreme System pulse warmly against his chest, analyzing the energy signature radiating from the masked figure above. This wasn't a common street thug or a hired corporate goon. The way the assassin balanced effortlessly on the narrow rail, defying the natural laws of gravity and momentum, screamed of something far darker.

"If you want the files," Ethan said, his voice cutting through the damp night air with absolute calm as his fingers curled into tight, hardened fists crackling with newly converted energy, "you're going to have to come down and take them yourself."

The masked figure tilted their head, a low, humorless chuckle echoing from the modulator. In a blur of motion that defied human capability, the assassin dropped from the fire escape, drawing a gleaming, curve-bladed shortsword as they plummeted directly toward Ethan in a lethal dive.

The steel blade gleamed under the flickering neon light, descending toward Ethan's chest with terrifying, supernatural speed.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Alistair Vance, presiding over the municipal district court, criminal division."The heavy oak doors of Courtroom 3B swung open with a hollow, echoing thud that seemed to compress the stale, copper-tinted air inside. Marcus Vance stood slowly, the linked steel chains around his waist and ankles clinking a dull, metallic rhythm against the worn linoleum floor.
