The maintenance shaft smelled of stagnant water, ozone, and something copper-sharp, like a butcher’s floor at midday. Reza pushed himself off the cold concrete, his muscles screaming in a rhythmic, pulse-like protest. The neon-blue text hung in his peripheral vision, a haunting, luminous HUD that didn't disappear even when he squeezed his eyes shut.

The countdown was relentless. Reza wiped a smear of black, oily residue from his cheek—the remnants of the creature he’d just butchered—and kicked the blast door. It groaned but held firm. He turned away, his boots splashing into an ankle-deep pool of dark, viscous liquid that hadn't been there ten minutes ago. The corridor was a tomb, the flickering emergency lights casting long, jagged shadows that seemed to reach for his ankles.

As he moved, a sharp, crystalline agony shot through his spine. It wasn't just pain; it was an expansion. He leaned against the wall, gasping, his shirt sticking to his sweat-slicked chest. His skin felt too tight, his nerves firing like frayed wires.

[ SYSTEM ALERT: BIOLOGICAL INTEGRATION AT 12% ]

[ ADAPTATION PHASE: COMMENCING ]

"Integration? What the hell does that even mean?" Reza hissed, his voice echoing too loudly in the narrow, flooded corridor. He felt a sudden, frantic surge of strength in his limbs, a dangerous, electric hum that made his fingers twitch. He looked down at his hands—the knuckles were bruised, but the tremors had ceased. He felt... overclocked.

He moved forward, his pace shifting from a desperate stumble to a predatory, silent glide. He reached the end of the maintenance tunnel and pressed his ear against the metal grate that led back into the main cell block.

Thud. Splat. Drag.

The sounds of the prison were wrong. They weren't the sounds of human suffering anymore; they were the wet, hungry noises of something shifting, molding, and consuming. Reza pried the grate open with the rebar, pulling himself up into the hallway of Block C.

The scene was a nightmare made flesh. The prison walls were weeping a thick, black ichor that pulsed in time with the flickering lights. In front of the canteen, three inmates—at least, they used to be inmates—were huddled over a pile of something unrecognizable. Their bodies were elongating, their skin stretching into translucent, grey husks. One of them turned. Where its face should have been, there was only a pulsating, vertical slit of bioluminescent violet.

Reza’s breath hitched. He wasn't a soldier, but he had lived a life of survival. He knew the layout of the prison’s internal security network better than the guards did, thanks to his extracurricular "hobbies" that had landed him here in the first place. He spotted the wall-mounted terminal, its wires exposed and sparking near the canteen entrance.

He sprinted, a blur of motion. The creatures screeched, their voices a discordant symphony of grinding glass, and lunged. Reza didn't stop. He vaulted over a discarded guard’s chair, his body moving with a fluid, unnatural grace that stunned him, and slammed his palm against the terminal.

"Come on, you piece of junk," he growled.

[ HACKING INTERFACE: ENABLED ]

[ OVERRIDE SECURITY LOCKS? Y/N ]

"Yes! Just open the damn doors!"

The interface bloomed in his mind, a flood of data pouring into his consciousness that made his nose bleed. He saw the prison’s digital architecture like a map of glowing veins. With a mental command, he surged through the security protocols, tearing through the firewalls as if they were wet paper.

The heavy electromagnetic locks on the security gates groaned and hissed open. He didn't wait to see if the creatures followed. He slammed his shoulder into the heavy gate, forcing it shut just as a spindly, razor-sharp claw raked against the metal, carving deep, molten gouges into the steel.

Reza didn't stop running. He tore through the administrative sector, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. His body felt hot, an internal fire that burned with every stride. The physical exertion was immense, but the System’s integration seemed to be fueling him, pouring adrenaline into his veins faster than his heart could pump it.

He reached the heavy reinforced glass doors of the main courtyard. He stopped, his lungs burning, his vision blurring as he looked out into the yard.

It was a sea of shifting, undulating darkness. Thousands of them. They looked like silhouettes carved out of the night sky, undulating, pulsing, and tearing at the iron fences. The entire courtyard was a writhing mass of shadow-entities, a storm of claws and teeth that blotted out the moonlight.

"There’s no way," he whispered, his hands trembling as he gripped the rebar. "That’s suicide."

[ QUEST OBJECTIVE: REACH THE PRISON PERIMETER ]

[ OBSTRUCTION DETECTED: HOSTILE SWARM ]

[ SUGGESTION: ACTIVATE FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM ]

Reza looked up, seeing the row of massive, dormant nozzles mounted above the courtyard balcony. They weren't water cannons; the prison’s fire suppression system used a chemical retardant designed to suffocate oxygen-fueled fires in the electronics bays.

He scrambled toward the emergency manual override station near the door. His fingers danced over the keypad, his brain processing the code sequences with a terrifying, inhuman speed.

Click.

The high-pressure vents screamed to life. A deafening hiss filled the courtyard as a torrential, white-foaming chemical agent blasted downward, flooding the area. The shadow-entities shrieked—a sound that could be felt in the marrow of one's bones—as the chemical reacted with their unstable, dark forms, causing them to dissolve into harmless vapor.

The path to the gate cleared.

Reza stepped out, his boots crunching on the wet, chemical-slicked asphalt. The air was thick with the scent of burning ozone and chemical fire. He was panting, his shirt hanging in tatters, his skin glowing with a faint, iridescent sheen where the System had bonded with his biological makeup.

He looked toward the high-security perimeter gate, the final barrier between him and the outside world. Then, he felt it—a gaze.

He looked up toward the central guard tower, the highest point in the facility. Standing there, silhouetted against the dying red glare of the emergency lights, was a figure. They were dressed in a tight, sleek bodysuit that seemed to absorb the light around them, their silhouette sharp and commanding.

The figure watched him with an unsettling, clinical detachment. They didn't move. They didn't attack. They simply held a tablet, tapping on it as if noting down the results of an experiment.

Reza felt a chill that had nothing to do with the night air. He narrowed his eyes, his knuckles white around the rebar. "Who the hell are you?"

The figure didn't answer. They simply turned and vanished into the shadows of the tower, leaving Reza alone in the center of the graveyard that used to be a prison.

00:42:15.

He was still alive. For now.

The shockwave from the core’s implosion had subsided, leaving behind a silence so absolute it felt like a physical weight pressing against Reza’s eardrums. He was still kneeling, his fingers locked with Maya’s, his lungs burning from the ozone-heavy air that smelled of scorched circuits and ionized space. The facility around them was in its death throes, the metallic girders screaming as they twisted and buckled into shapes that defied Euclidean geometry."Reza, focus!" Maya’s voice cut through the ringing in his head. She was pulling at his hand, her knuckles white, her eyes darting to the structural ruins overhead. "The entire station is de-syncing. We’re being pulled into the wake of the gate."He shook his head, trying to clear the static-filled fog in his vision. The HUD in his mind wasn't just displaying data anymore; it was vomiting a stream of unintelligible, shifting glyphs that looked more like celestial geometry than code. "I’m trying," he gritted out, his voice a jagged ra

The crystalline sphere didn't just shatter; it imploded. A silent, concussive wave of violet energy rippled outward, turning the reinforced walls of the inner sanctum into fine, drifting sand. Reza was thrown backward, the impact stealing the breath from his lungs, but he never lost his grip on Maya’s hand. Even as the floor beneath them began to liquefy into a swirling vortex of shadow and static, their connection held—a frantic, desperate tether in a reality that was rapidly being unwritten.Reza scrambled to his feet, pulling Maya up with him. The chamber was no longer a room; it was a precipice overlooking a bottomless, roiling abyss. He looked down, and his heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. The core wasn't a battery. It was a throat—a jagged, luminous tear in the fabric of the prison facility, and it was swallowing the foundation of the world."Reza, look!" • Chapter 8: Storming the Bunkers

The keening from the surface had intensified into a rhythmic, drill-like vibration that rattled the loose gravel on the subway tracks. Maya pulled away, but only to grab her tactical harness. The heated, defiant haze of their encounter in the tunnel dissipated, replaced by the razor-sharp coldness of a soldier preparing for a suicide run. She tossed a spare pulse-emitter to Reza, her movements precise and economy-driven."Check the charge," she commanded, her eyes already scanning the dark mouth of the maintenance service elevator they had pried open.Reza caught the device, the weight of it familiar now. He checked his own HUD; the gold flicker was settling, the System still hovering on the edge of a reprimand but currently dormant. "Status?""Locked in," Maya said, tapping her wrist gauntlet. "I burned the encryption keys from their local node during the purge. We’re ghosts to their security system for exactly twelve minutes.""Twelve minutes to get to the command center," Reza mutt

  • Chapter 5: The City of Glass

The server room floor was cold, a stark contrast to the lingering heat radiating from Maya’s skin. Reza pushed himself up, his muscles singing with the new efficiency the System had granted him. He felt dangerous—a coiled spring of synthetic adrenaline and refined focus. Maya didn’t linger on the sentiment of their connection; she was already cinching the straps of her tactical rig, her eyes shifting from the soft, searching gaze of a lover back to the cold, analytical stare of a survivor."Check your gear," Maya said, her voice clipped. She handed him a jagged piece of hardened composite—a shard of armor plating she’d salvaged from the server racks. "It isn't a blade, but it’ll punch through a carapace if you put your weight behind it."Reza gripped the shard, feeling the weight balance perfectly in his palm. "Where to?""The transit hub," she replied, heading for the heavy lobby doors. "If the city is as infected as the prison, the underground lines are our best bet for moving fast
