For several seconds, nobody moved.

Daniel Reed stood with his back against the closed door.

Sophia looked at me.

I looked at Daniel.

“You were driving the SUV.”

It wasn’t a question.

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

My hands curled into fists.

“You hit my car.”

“Yes.”

“You tried to kill me.”

His face tightened.

“No.”

I took a step toward him.

“Then explain.”

Daniel glanced at Sophia.

She nodded.

He slowly walked toward the desk.

“I was following you that night.”

“Why?”

“To protect you.”

I laughed.

“Protect me?”

“You had been marked.”

“By whom?”

“I didn’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

I grabbed the front of his shirt.

Sophia stepped forward.

“Adrian.”

I ignored her.

“You’ve had three years to tell the truth.”

Daniel didn’t resist.

“I couldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.”

I released him.

He straightened his shirt.

Then he reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small flash drive.

“I kept this.”

He placed it on the desk.

“What is it?”

“Security footage.”

My eyes narrowed.

“From the night of the accident?”

“Yes.”

“Why keep it?”

“Because I knew one day you’d come back.”

I picked up the drive.

“What’s on it?”

“The truth.”

I looked at Sophia.

She nodded.

“Play it.”

Daniel connected the drive to her computer.

A video appeared.

The footage was grainy.

A security camera overlooking a parking lot.

I recognized the location immediately.

Vale International.

The timestamp read:

11:47 PM.

I watched myself walk toward my car.

Then Daniel appeared.

He was following me.

A few seconds later, another vehicle entered the frame.

Black SUV.

The same one from the accident.

My breathing slowed.

The SUV stopped.

A man stepped out.

Even through the poor-quality footage, I recognized him.

Victor’s personal security chief.

“Victor.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

The footage continued.

The man approached my car.

He crouched near the rear wheel.

My eyes narrowed.

“What is he doing?”

Daniel paused the video.

“Look closely.”

He zoomed in.

A small device had been attached beneath my car.

“What is that?”

“A tracking device.”

I stared at the screen.

“He was tracking me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

The footage continued.

Victor’s security chief returned to the SUV.

Then another person appeared.

Marcus.

My best friend.

I stopped breathing.

Marcus walked toward the SUV.

They spoke for several minutes.

Then Marcus handed the man something.

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

“Play it again.”

Daniel did.

Marcus.

My best friend.

The man who testified against me.

The man who told the board he had seen evidence on my computer.

He had been meeting Victor’s security chief hours before my accident.

My jaw tightened.

“Where is Marcus now?”

Daniel answered.

“Still working for Victor.”

I stood.

“I’m going to see him.”

Sophia grabbed my arm.

“No.”

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Why?”

“Because that’s what they want.”

“Who?”

“Whoever sent the message.”

I pulled my arm free.

“I’m not hiding anymore.”

“You don’t understand.”

She stepped in front of me.

“Three years ago, you were alone.”

She looked directly into my eyes.

“Now you have people watching you.”

“I can protect myself.”

“I know.”

Her voice softened.

“But revenge makes people careless.”

I stared at her.

The woman I had spent three years hating was standing in front of me, warning me not to make the same mistake that nearly killed me.

I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

Then my phone rang.

Noah.

I answered.

“What?”

His voice was urgent.

“Adrian, where are you?”

“Bennett Holdings.”

“Leave immediately.”

“Why?”

“Someone just accessed your old Vale account.”

I froze.

“That’s impossible.”

“The account was supposed to be closed three years ago.”

“Who accessed it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Find out.”

“I tried.”

A pause.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“The person who accessed it left a message.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What message?”

Noah’s voice dropped.

“Ask your father why he wanted you dead.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

My father.

For three years, I had believed he had simply abandoned me.

But now someone was telling me he wanted me dead.

I looked at Sophia.

She was watching my face.

“You heard that, didn’t you?”

She nodded.

“What do you know about my father?”

Her expression changed.

“More than I wanted to.”

“Then tell me.”

She hesitated.

“Your father wasn’t the person who ordered the accident.”

I exhaled.

“Then who was?”

Sophia looked at Daniel.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Finally, Sophia whispered:

“We don’t know.”

“That’s not good enough.”

“I know.”

She stepped closer.

“But we know one thing.”

“What?”

Her eyes met mine.

“The person behind it has been inside your family for years.”

My phone vibrated again.

A new message.

One sentence.

STOP LOOKING FOR THE TRUTH, ADRIAN.

Then another arrived.

OR NEXT TIME, THERE WON’T BE A SURVIVOR.

I stared at the screen.

Three years ago, they had taken everything from me.

This time, they had made one mistake.

They had given me a reason to stop running.

  • THE PROMISE TO THE BABY IN THE THIRD CRIB

I stared at Ethan’s photograph until the screen dimmed. His hands were tied behind a chair. Blood marked his lower lip, and a bruise darkened his cheekbone. Behind him, Gabriel Vale stood with one hand resting on the chair. The woman beside Gabriel had her face scratched out.But I recognized her coat.It was the same dark coat Eleanor Voss had worn at the chapel.I looked up.“Where is Eleanor Voss?”Eleanor Vale, the woman who had raised me, frowned.“Why are you asking me?”“Because this woman is wearing her coat.”She studied the photograph.“That isn’t Eleanor Voss.”“How can you be certain?”“Because Eleanor Voss has a scar on her left hand. This woman’s hands are visible.”I enlarged the image. The woman’s fingers were bare.No scar.No ring.Nothing that could establish her identity.“Then who is she?” Sophia asked.Eleanor shook her head.“I don’t know.”I looked at the clock.11:08 p.m.Gabriel wanted the original security ring at midnight. He had Ethan, and he had made it c

The lullaby drifted through the darkness.Three will be born, and three return soon.I raised my weapon toward the sound.“Whoever you are, show yourself!”The singing stopped. Then a woman’s voice answered.“Adrian, put the gun down.”My blood ran cold.I knew that voice.I had heard it in childhood memories, in nightmares, and in the few recordings of my mother I had managed to recover.“Mother?”Ethan grabbed my arm.“Don’t move.”The emergency lights flickered on, bathing the vault in a dim red glow.Gabriel Vale was gone. The steel door remained sealed, and the computer terminal had shut down. Only the old security ring on my finger and the file displayed moments earlier remained in my thoughts. Then someone stepped from between the cabinets.A woman in a dark coat. Her hair was streaked with gray. Her face was thinner than the woman in my memories, but her eyes were unmistakable.Eleanor Vale. The woman who had raised me.The woman who had told me she was my aunt. The woman whos

Her lips parted, but no sound came out. Then she shook her head.“No.”I gripped the phone.“Tell me you know nothing about this.”“I don’t know anything about it, Adrian.”“Your father protected the third child. His letter was addressed to Ethan. Eleanor gave us a key bearing your initials. Now a dying doctor says the missing child’s name is yours.”“I’m telling you the truth!”Her voice cracked.I wanted to believe her. God knew I wanted to believe her.But my entire life had been destroyed by people who had looked me in the eye and sworn they were telling the truth.I had learned that love didn’t make someone innocent. And a familiar face didn’t make someone trustworthy.Ethan stepped between us.“Stop.”I turned toward him.“Stay out of this.”“No. We’re not going to repeat what our families did

The bullet tore through the lock.“DOWN!” I shouted.Sophia dropped behind the desk as the door burst open.A man in a black tactical jacket entered with his weapon raised. He scanned the room, found me, and fired.I threw myself behind a bookcase. The bullet shattered a framed photograph.“Who sent you?” I shouted. He didn’t answer. He advanced toward the desk.I moved before he reached Sophia.I slammed into him from the side, driving his weapon arm against the wall. • THE NAME INSIDE THE BLUE BOX

“Ethan Vale?”I stared at Sophia. She nodded, her face drained of color.“My father’s letter was addressed to Ethan. Not you. Not me. Ethan.”“That doesn’t make sense. Your father died years before Ethan and I discovered each other.”“I know.”“Then how could he have known Ethan existed?”Sophia shook her head. “I don’t know, Adrian. That’s why we need to find that letter.”Outside the vehicle, Noah glanced at us through the rearview mirror.“Where are we going?”“Bennett House,” Sophia answered. “My father’s old residence.”Noah’s expression changed.“That’s been abandoned for years.”“Not completely,” she said. “The property is maintained by a caretaker. My father insisted that the house and everything inside it remain untouched.”“Why didn’t you tell me about this before?” I asked.Sophia turned toward me.“Because I didn’t know the letter existed until Eleanor mentioned it. My father died when I was young. Afterward, my aunt handled his estate. She told me there were old business

  • THE SISTER THEY ERASED

YOUR SISTER IS ALIVE.I read the words again. Then I enlarged the photograph on my phone.Eleanor Voss stood outside a hospital entrance, twenty years younger, her dark hair falling across one shoulder. She held a newborn wrapped in a white blanket. The date stamped beneath the image matched the night my mother had given birth. But it wasn’t the date that frightened me.It was the hospital bracelet around the baby’s wrist.I could barely make out the writing, but one word was clear.VALE.“Adrian!”Noah’s voice pulled me back to the present.Bullets were striking the wall behind us. Marcus was barely conscious, and the attackers were closing in.I shoved the phone into my pocket.“Get Marcus into the vehicle!”Noah grabbed Marcus’s other arm. Together, we dragged him toward the drainage path while Ethan’s voice crackled through my earpiece.“Where are you?”“Under attack at the old service station. Marcus is wounded.”“I’m coming.”“No! Stay with Sophia.”“Adrian—”“That’s an order, E
