Kaelen had been walking for two days when she found him.
The road to the Sunken Mountains wound through dead forests and abandoned villages. The Veil Council's influence had spread everywhere. Burned homes. Empty fields. Silence where life should have been.
He was resting beneath a collapsed bridge when the knife pressed against his throat.
"Don't move."
The voice was female. Cold. Professional.
Kaelen froze. "Who are you?"
"Someone who's been hunting you for weeks." The knife pressed deeper. "You're Kaelen Voss. The Auctioneer who freed the Drowned Queen. The one who escaped the Veil Council."
"That's me. What do you want?"
"I want to know where the sanctuary is. The volcano god. You know where it's hidden."
Kaelen's jaw tightened. "Why should I tell you?"
"Because I'll kill you if you don't."
"Then kill me. I'm not afraid to die."
The knife paused. A moment of hesitation.
"You're either very brave," the woman said, "or very stupid."
"Both."
She laughed. It was a harsh, humorless sound. But she withdrew the knife.
Kaelen turned to face her.
She was tall. Lean. Her dark hair was pulled back in a tight braid. Her eyes were sharp and calculating. A scar ran from her temple to her jaw—old, faded, but unmistakable.
She wore the leather coat of an Auctioneer. But her bindings were different. Darker. More aggressive.
"Who are you?" Kaelen asked again.
"Valeris." She holstered her knife. "I'm a rogue. Like you. The Veil Council branded me a traitor five years ago. I've been running ever since."
Kaelen's eyes narrowed. "Why should I trust you?"
"You shouldn't. But you need me." She gestured toward the mountains. "The sanctuary is protected by seven Syllables of Warding. You can't break them alone. But I can."
"How?"
She smiled. It was a cold smile. "Because I helped build them."
---
Valeris led him through the dead forest.
She moved like a predator—silent, efficient, always watching. Her eyes scanned the shadows constantly.
Kaelen followed, his hand never far from his throat. He'd survived two days without the Drowned Queen's guidance. The voices were faint now. Distant. He was running on instinct alone.
"The volcano god," he said. "What is it?"
"A nexus. A collection of gods that fused together after the founders fell. It's been hiding in the mountain for centuries, waiting for someone who could hear it."
"How do you know all this?"
Valeris paused. Her expression flickered.
"Because I'm the one who helped the founders build the sanctuary. Before I turned on them."
Kaelen stopped. "You were one of them?"
"I was their apprentice. Their protégé. They taught me everything I know about Syllables and bindings." Her voice hardened. "Then I saw what they were doing. What they'd done to the world. I escaped. I've been fighting them ever since."
Kaelen's mind raced. An apprentice to the founders. Someone who knew their secrets. Their weaknesses.
"You can help me stop them," he said. "You can help me find the Forgotten Gods."
"I can help you find the volcano god. After that, you're on your own."
"Why?"
"Because I've seen what happens to people who get too close to the founders' power. They become obsessed. Corrupted. They lose themselves." She looked at him. "I won't let that happen to you."
Kaelen opened his mouth to argue.
A sound cut him off.
Footsteps. Dozens of them.
The Veil Council's Silencers had found them.
---
They emerged from the shadows like wolves. Silver marks blazing. Syllables humming.
Valeris drew her knives. "How many?"
"Too many." Kaelen's heart pounded. "We can't fight them all."
"We won't fight." She grabbed his arm. "We run."
They sprinted through the forest. Branches whipped their faces. Roots tripped their feet. Behind them, the Silencers gave chase.
Kaelen's lungs burned. His legs screamed.
But the voices returned.
*"Left."*
*"Right."*
*"Duck."*
He followed their instructions blindly. Left. Right. Duck. A Silencer's blade sliced through the air above his head.
Valeris glanced at him. "How do you—"
"The voices. They're guiding me."
Her eyes widened. "You really can hear them. The Silence is real."
"Less talk. More running."
They burst into a clearing. The sun was setting. The mountains loomed ahead.
But the Silencers had cut them off. Dozens of them. Surrounding them.
Silver Mask stepped forward. His silver mark burned brighter than ever.
"Kaelen Voss. Valeris the Traitor. The Council has been waiting for this moment."
Valeris's jaw tightened. "You'll never take us alive."
"That's the idea."
He raised his hand. The Silencers advanced.
Kaelen hummed the Syllable of Severance. A shockwave erupted, throwing the Silencers backward.
But more took their place.
They were surrounded.
Valeris grabbed Kaelen's arm. "The sanctuary. It's close. We just need to—"
A Silencer lunged. Valeris blocked its blade with her knife. Sparks flew.
Kaelen hummed another Syllable—one he'd never used before. The Syllable of Sacrifice.
The power surge was immense. It exploded from his chest, ripping through the Silencers like a tidal wave.
But the cost was immediate. Kaelen collapsed. His vision blurred. His body refused to move.
Valeris caught him. "No. Not now. Not yet."
Silver Mask struggled to his feet. His silver mark flickered. His voice was hoarse with rage.
"You'll pay for this, Voss. Both of you. The Council will—"
"They won't do anything."
Valeris raised her hand. A dark Syllable hummed on her lips. The ground beneath Silver Mask cracked. Opened. Swallowed him whole.
The remaining Silencers scattered. Their leader was gone.
Valeris dragged Kaelen toward the mountain. "We have to keep moving. The Council will send more."
Kaelen's vision swam. "You... you killed him?"
"I buried him. There's a difference."
She pulled him into a cave. Darkness swallowed them.
And deep inside the mountain, a god began to awaken.

Streets paved with the bones of forgotten civilizations. It was magnificent. Terrifying. Ancient beyond comprehension. And at its center, a single structure rose above all others. A temple of obsidian and shadow. Pulsing with a dark rhythm."The final fragment," the first Auctioneer said. "It's in there."Kaelen started walking.---
The First Auctioneer's Confession
The desert ghosts had vanished with the fragment's acceptance, leaving behind an eerie stillness. Kaelen's body thrummed with five fragments—five pieces of a puzzle he still didn't fully understand. The winter cold still clung to his bones. The desert heat still burned his skin. Opposites warring inside him.Valeris collapsed onto the sand, her face pale with exhaustion. "We need rest. You can't keep pushing like this."Kaelen shook his head. He couldn't afford to stop. The whispers had grown stronger—not just the fragments, but something else. Something darker, pulsing beneath the desert's surface. The first Auctioneer stood apart from them, his ancient face turned toward the horizon. His hands trembled at his sides."I failed," he said quietly. "When I took the desert fragment, I didn't just lose myself. I helped them. The founders. I showed them how to build the final sanctuary."Valeris's head snapped up. "What?""I was their apprentice. Their protégé. They trusted me with their g

The cold that had seeped into his bones was replaced by a suffocating warmth that stole his breath.Valeris stumbled beside him. "The desert. We're here already?"The first Auctioneer nodded grimly. "The sanctuaries are connected. Cross one threshold, and you enter the next. The founders built them that way. A gauntlet for anyone foolish enough to challenge them."Kaelen's mind was fuzzy. The winter fragment still pulsed inside him—a shard of ice in a sea of fire. His body couldn't decide whether to shiver or sweat.*"Kaelen."*The whisper came from within.
