The cave tunneled deep into the mountain's core.
Kaelen's vision blurred with every step. The Syllable of Sacrifice had drained him. His legs barely held his weight.
Valeris half-dragged him through the darkness. Her grip was iron. Her pace was relentless.
"Almost there," she said. "Just a little further."
The air grew hotter. Steam rose from cracks in the stone. The walls glowed with veins of molten rock.
Kaelen coughed. His throat was raw. "How do you... know this place?"
"Because I helped build it." Valeris didn't look at him. "The founders brought me here when I was young. They showed me the sanctuary. They taught me the Syllables that protect it."
"Then why did you leave?"
She stopped. Her jaw tightened.
"Because they weren't protecting the gods. They were imprisoning them. Using them. And when I refused to help, they branded me a traitor."
Kaelen studied her face. The scar on her cheek. The hardness in her eyes.
"Why are you helping me now?"
"Because I heard about the Drowned Queen. About how you freed her instead of selling her." She turned to face him. "You're the only Auctioneer who ever showed mercy. That means something."
The tunnel opened into a vast chamber.
Molten lava churned in a pool at the center. Heat shimmered in waves. And on an island in the middle of the inferno, a figure waited.
It was made of fire and stone. Its eyes burned like dying suns. Its voice rumbled like an earthquake.
*"You came."*
Kaelen fell to his knees. The god's presence pressed down on him like a weight.
"Are you... the volcano god?"
*"I am many things. A nexus of forgotten gods. A prison for the founders' sins. A sanctuary for the scattered ones."* The god stepped closer. The lava rippled beneath its feet. *"And you, Kaelen Voss, are the Silence I've been waiting for."*
"The Silence. The Drowned Queen mentioned it."
*"The ability to hear the Forgotten Gods. The gift that the founders tried to erase. You are the first Auctioneer born with it in a thousand years."*
Kaelen struggled to his feet. "What do you want from me?"
*"To gather us. To free us. To stop the Veil Council from completing their new Anti-God."*
"How do I do that?"
*"Take my piece. Carry me with you. Find the other sanctuaries. Unite the Forgotten Gods."* The god extended a hand. A shard of obsidian pulsed in its palm. *"But there is a price."*
Kaelen's throat tightened. "What price?"
*"Your voice. Every fragment you collect will take a piece of your voice. By the time you gather us all, you will be silent forever."*
Valeris stepped forward. "Don't do it. There has to be another way."
Kaelen didn't look at her. His eyes were locked on the obsidian shard.
"If I don't do it," he said, "the Council wins. The Anti-God resets the world. Everything dies."
*"He's right,"* the god said. *"There is no other way. The Silence must pay the price."*
Kaelen reached for the shard.
"Wait." Valeris grabbed his wrist. "If you lose your voice, you lose your power. No Syllables. No bindings. You'll be helpless."
"I was helpless before. I survived."
"Barely."
Kaelen pulled his wrist free. "I'll find another way to fight. But first, I need the gods."
He closed his fingers around the obsidian shard.
The heat seared his palm. Pain shot up his arm. He gritted his teeth and held on.
And the voices exploded back into his mind.
Not just the Drowned Queen. Not just the volcano god. Thousands of them. All of the Forgotten Gods, scattered across the realms, calling to him.
*"Kaelen."*
*"We're here."*
*"We're waiting."*
*"Gather us."*
He collapsed. The power surge was overwhelming. His body convulsed. His throat burned.
And when he opened his mouth, only a whisper came out.
"I hear you."
The volcano god smiled. *"Good. Now go. The other sanctuaries are waiting. The lost caravans. The forgotten names. The fragments of the First Auctioneer's legacy."*
Kaelen struggled to stand. The obsidian shard was warm in his palm. The voices were faint but present.
"Where do I go next?"
*"The desert. The sanctuary of lost caravans. A god of memory and sand."*
Valeris grabbed his arm. "That's a three-week journey. We'll never make it before the Council—"
"The Council is already here."
The chamber shook.
Lava splashed. Stones fell from the ceiling. And from the tunnel behind them, a voice echoed.
"You're not going anywhere."
Silver Mask emerged from the darkness. His silver mark blazed. His robes were torn. His face was twisted with rage.
"Impossible," Valeris breathed. "I buried you."
"I escaped." He raised his hand. "And I brought friends."
More Silencers poured into the chamber. Dozens of them. Their Syllables hummed. Their silver marks blazed.
Kaelen's blood ran cold. He had no voice left. No power. No escape.
"Take them," Silver Mask ordered.
The Silencers surged forward.
Valeris drew her knives. "Kaelen. The shard. Use it."
"I can't. My voice—"
"It's not your voice." She slammed her palm against his chest. "It's the gods. Let them out."
Kaelen's eyes widened. He understood.
He closed his eyes. Focused on the obsidian shard. On the voices inside him.
And he let go.
The volcano god erupted from his chest. A tidal wave of fire and stone. It crashed into the Silencers, consuming them.
Silver Mask screamed. His silver mark flickered and died.
The chamber collapsed.
Lava surged. Walls crumbled. The ceiling fell.
Kaelen grabbed Valeris. They ran for the exit.
Behind them, the volcano god roared. Its power was immense. Devastating.
But it was fading. Dispersing.
By the time they reached the mountain's base, it was gone.
Kaelen collapsed to his knees. The obsidian shard was cold in his palm. The voices were silent.
Valeris knelt beside him. "You did it. You survived."
He opened his mouth. Nothing came out.
His voice was gone.
She stared at him. Horror dawning on her face.
"No. No. You didn't—"
He nodded.
The price had been paid.
The volcano god's fragment had taken his voice.
Valeris's hands trembled. "There's no way to get it back. We can't—"
Kaelen stood. He couldn't speak. Couldn't hum. Couldn't fight.
But he could walk.
He started walking toward the desert.
Valeris followed. "You're insane. You're completely—"
He didn't stop.
He had four sanctuaries left to find. Four more fragments to gather.
And he would find them all.
Even if it killed him.

The Buried City

The fragments in his palm blazed with light, illuminating a vast underground cavern.Valeris landed beside him, gasping. "Where are we?""Beneath the world." The first Auctioneer's voice echoed. "The founders' city. The place where they first trapped the Anti-God."Kaelen struggled to his feet. His body screamed. Streets paved with the bones of forgotten civilizations. It was magnificent. Terrifying. Ancient beyond comprehension. And at its center, a single structure rose above all others. A temple of obsidian and shadow. Pulsing with a dark rhythm."The final fragment," the first Auctioneer said. "It's in there."Kaelen started walking.---
The First Auctioneer's Confession
The desert ghosts had vanished with the fragment's acceptance, leaving behind an eerie stillness. Kaelen's body thrummed with five fragments—five pieces of a puzzle he still didn't fully understand. The winter cold still clung to his bones. The desert heat still burned his skin. Opposites warring inside him.Valeris collapsed onto the sand, her face pale with exhaustion. "We need rest. You can't keep pushing like this."Kaelen shook his head. He couldn't afford to stop. The whispers had grown stronger—not just the fragments, but something else. Something darker, pulsing beneath the desert's surface. The first Auctioneer stood apart from them, his ancient face turned toward the horizon. His hands trembled at his sides."I failed," he said quietly. "When I took the desert fragment, I didn't just lose myself. I helped them. The founders. I showed them how to build the final sanctuary."Valeris's head snapped up. "What?""I was their apprentice. Their protégé. They trusted me with their g

The cold that had seeped into his bones was replaced by a suffocating warmth that stole his breath.Valeris stumbled beside him. "The desert. We're here already?"The first Auctioneer nodded grimly. "The sanctuaries are connected. Cross one threshold, and you enter the next. The founders built them that way. A gauntlet for anyone foolish enough to challenge them."Kaelen's mind was fuzzy. The winter fragment still pulsed inside him—a shard of ice in a sea of fire. His body couldn't decide whether to shiver or sweat.*"Kaelen."*The whisper came from within.
