Noah was halfway through his morning coffee when the email arrived.

MANDATORY MEETING – 9:00 AM – CONFERENCE ROOM B

No subject. No agenda. Just Linda's name at the bottom.

His stomach dropped.

He looked at the system overlay.

CRITICAL MEETING DETECTED

THREAT LEVEL: HIGH

"Great," Noah muttered.

The conference room was cold. Linda sat at one end of the table. Mark at the other. Noah took the chair between them.

Bad sign.

"Thanks for coming," Linda said. Like he had a choice.

"What's this about?" Noah asked.

Linda slid a thin folder across the table. "A promotion."

Noah stared at it. Didn't touch it. "To what?"

"You'll be coordinating the oversight," she said.

Noah looked up slowly. His coffee had gone cold in his hand. "Oversight of what?"

Linda smiled. "Everything."

"That's not an answer."

"It's a flexible role."

Mark leaned back in his chair. Too relaxed. "Think of it as central responsibility. You're the point person."

"For which department?" Noah asked.

"All of them," Mark said.

Noah flipped open the folder. Blank pages. One printed page at the back.

ROLE: OPERATIONS LIAISON

DELIVERABLES: AS REQUIRED

DEADLINES: DYNAMIC

“Do these people really think I'm dumb?” He thought.

He looked up again. "There's nothing here."

"That's because the scope will evolve," Linda said.

"So I'm responsible for things that don't exist yet."

"Now you're getting it," Mark said, smiling.

Noah's chest tightened. He knew this feeling. "So…who do I report to?"

Linda and Mark exchanged a glance.

"Everyone," Linda said.

Noah closed the folder. His hands wanted to shake. He kept them still. "And authority?"

Mark shrugged. "You'll have influence."

Noah stood. "No authority. Full responsibility. Undefined scope."

Linda's smile thinned. "You wanted to survive, didn't you?"

The words hit like a slap.

Noah met her eyes. "I want clarity."

"You'll get it as we go," she replied. "Start today."

The system pulsed hard behind his eyes.

CRITICAL THREAT CONFIRMED

PATTERN MATCH: 97%

PREVIOUS TERMINATION ROLE REBUILT

“Let's play a little then.” Noah thought.

He picked up the folder. His throat felt tight. "Send me the access list."

"You'll get what you need," Mark said.

"That's what you said last time."

Mark's eyes flickered. "This time is different."

Noah didn't argue. He walked out before his hands started shaking.

"Congratulations," Sarah said quietly as he sat down. "You just got promoted into a nightmare."

Noah opened his laptop. His hands were steadier now. "You noticed."

"Everyone noticed," she said. "They gave you a job with no edges."

"Edges are where people bleed," Noah replied.

She frowned, looked scared. "You're not joking anymore."

"No," he said. "I'm working."

His inbox began filling immediately.

Why hasn't this been approved?

We need numbers by the end of the day.

Who signed off on this delay?

Why are you holding the process?

No sender took responsibility.

No request came with context.

The system pulsed.

DATA INCONSISTENCIES DETECTED

Noah clicked into a report. Numbers didn't line up. He opened the raw file.

Access denied.

He tried another folder.

Access denied.

His jaw clenched. He exhaled slowly through his nose.

"So it starts now."

"Why can't you pull the data?"

Joyce, the woman who'd taken over Kevin's projects stood at his desk. Arms crossed. Eyes hard.

"I don't have access," Noah said.

"That's your job."

" I know that. It's my responsibility," Noah corrected.

She crossed her arms tighter. "They're asking why you're delaying."

"Tell them to give me access."

"They said you already have it."

Noah opened his screen and turned it toward her. "Look."

She stared. Her face went pale. "That's... that's weird."

"It's deliberate," Noah said.

She stepped back. "I don't want to be involved."

"Neither did Kevin," Noah replied.

She stiffened. "Don't say that."

She walked away fast. Almost running.

The system pulsed.

PRESSURE ESCALATION: ACTIVE

By afternoon, everything got worse.

Emails turned sharp.

Meetings were called without him.

Decisions were made and sent to him after.

Why wasn't this flagged?

You're responsible for oversight.

This delay is on you.

Noah sat still. Hands folded. His chest felt too tight.

His phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

"You're struggling."

Noah's stomach dropped. He typed back. "I'm still observing."

"You always were quiet."

His jaw tightened. Who the hell was this? "Who is this?"

Three dots appeared. Then vanished.

"Careful. This role ends careers."

Noah stared at the screen. His hands started shaking again.

He whispered to the system. "Is he part of it?"

The answer came in words this time.

AFFIRMATIVE. BLACKLISTED ACTOR. PREVIOUS CYCLE.

"Previous cycle?" Noah asked.

HOST WAS ELIMINATED USING SIMILAR PATTERNS. ACTOR SURVIVED.

"So he's done this before," Noah said quietly.

CORRECT.

"You look tired."

Martha's voice made him flinch.

He looked up. "Why are you here?"

She smiled. Soft. Fake. "Concern."

"You shouldn't be."

She sat on the edge of his desk. Too close. "People are worried."

"About the work or about me?"

"About what you might uncover," she said.

Noah stared at her. Saw the lie in her eyes. "You're slipping."

She laughed. Light and empty. "You're just paranoid."

The system flickered.

LIES DETECTED

"No," Noah said. "I'm just paying attention."

She leaned closer. Her perfume made his stomach turn. "You don't have to carry this alone, you know that right?."

"I do," Noah replied. "That's the point of the role."

Her smile faded. "You're making things harder than they need to be."

"For who?"

"For everyone."

"For me," Noah said. "Or for you?"

She stood. Her face went cold. "Be careful."

"So I keep hearing."

She walked away. Heels clicking too loud on the floor.

By the third day, the trap closed tighter.

Deadlines overlapped.

Reports contradicted each other.

He was blamed in meetings he wasn't invited to.

Linda stopped responding to emails.

Mark stopped smiling.

"Why is compliance asking questions?" Mark demanded in the hallway. His face was red.

"Because the numbers don't match," Noah said.

"That's your responsibility."

"I don't have the access to verify them."

"That's an excuse, Noah."

"No, its not." Noah's voice stayed calm but his hands were fists. "It's the design."

Mark's face went darker. "Watch how you speak."

Noah leaned closer. "I am."

The system pulsed.

HOST STABILITY: STRAINED BUT INTACT

That night, Noah stayed late.

Empty office. Lights humming. His eyes hurt from staring at screens all day.

He opened every file he could.

Saved screenshots.

Recorded timestamps.

Logged access denials.

His hands were shaking from too much coffee. Or fear. He couldn't tell anymore.

The system pulsed sharp.

NEW PERMISSION UNLOCKED

"What?" Noah whispered.

The overlay expanded.

Folders appeared that had never existed before.

He clicked one. His heart was pounding.

THE BLACKLIST NETWORK

His breath caught.

Names filled the screen.

Not just his.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

Noah scrolled. The list kept going.

MARCUS CHEN – TERMINATED 2018 – DATA BREACH ACCUSATION

SARAH WILLIAMS – RESIGNED 2019 – HARASSMENT ALLEGATION

DAVID PATTERSON – DECEASED 2020 – VEHICLE ACCIDENT

ELENA RODRIGUEZ – TERMINATED 2021 – FRAUD INVESTIGATION

JAMES MITCHELL – TERMINATED 2022 – EMBEZZLEMENT CLAIM

KEVIN HALE – UNDER INVESTIGATION 2025 – AUDIT FAILURE

Engineers. Analysts. Accountants. IT staff.

Each name connected to multiple outcomes.

Terminations.

Scandals.

Deaths.

His hands went cold.

"This isn't just about me," Noah said.

"Tell me about this," Noah said. "What is this network?"

The system answered.

BLACKLIST NETWORK: SYSTEMATIC ELIMINATION PROTOCOL

TARGETS ARE PLACED IN HIGH-RISK ROLES

OUTCOMES ARE PREDETERMINED

SURVIVAL RATE: 3%

"Who runs it?" Noah asked. His voice cracked.

MULTIPLE ACTORS. DISTRIBUTED CONTROL.

"Show me names," Noah demanded.

The list shifted.

PRIMARY CONTROLLERS:

LINDA CYRIL – HR DIRECTOR – OVERSIGHT ASSIGNMENT

JULIAN CROSS – OPERATIONS DIRECTOR – TRAP ARCHITECTURE

MARK ELLIS – PROJECT LEAD – EVIDENCE MANIPULATION

SECONDARY ACTORS:

MARTHA REED – INTELLIGENCE GATHERING

CLARA WHITE – LEGAL COMPLIANCE

DAVID ROST – FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT

And more. Names he recognized from meetings. Names from other departments.

"So everyone's a cog," Noah whispered.

AFFIRMATIVE. INDIVIDUAL ACTORS RECEIVE BENEFITS FOR SUCCESSFUL ELIMINATIONS.

"What kind of benefits?"

PROMOTIONS. BONUSES. PROTECTION FROM INVESTIGATION.

"This role," Noah said. His throat was tight. "It feeds the network."

CORRECT. OPERATIONS LIAISON ROLE HAS 100% FAILURE RATE.

ALL PREVIOUS HOLDERS TERMINATED WITHIN 90 DAYS.

He sat back. His chest hurt.

Every fall was logged.

Every scapegoat was reused.

The trap wasn't rebuilt for him.

It was standard. A fucking factory.

His phone buzzed.

Linda.

"Are you staying late?" she asked.

"Yes," Noah replied. His voice sounded hollow.

"Good," she said. "We'll need answers tomorrow."

"You'll get them," Noah said.

She paused. "Be sure of that."

The call ended.

Noah stared at the glowing list. Hundreds of names. Hundreds of people who'd burned.

"So that's the game."

The system pulsed one last time.

HIGH RISK WINDOW: OPEN

RECOMMENDED ACTION: DOCUMENT EVIDENCE. PREPARE COUNTERMEASURE.

Noah closed his laptop.

His hands were still shaking. But his mind was clear.

This time, he wasn't inside the trap alone.

This time, he could see the whole machine.

And he wasn't breaking.

Not yet.
