The chamber falls silent except for the low hum of servers somewhere behind the walls. Lucien watches the encrypted text scroll across the screen, unable to read a single character of it, yet perfectly capable of reading the tension gathering in every face around the table.

"Leon," Sophia says, her voice suddenly sharp. "Translate."

Leon's fingers are already moving across a holographic interface that rises from the table's surface like something out of a film Lucien never had money to see in theaters. "Give me a second. It's routed through four relays before it even hits our servers, which means whoever sent it doesn't want to be traced, but also wants us to know they could have hidden it better if they'd tried."

"Meaning what?" Ronan asks.

"Meaning it's a message, not surveillance." Leon's grin fades as the translation resolves on screen. He reads it aloud, his voice losing its usual humor. "The heir has been found. The throne remains contested. Confirm nothing. Deny nothing. Watch everything."

The words settle over the room like a held breath. Adrian's jaw tightens almost imperceptibly.

"Signature?" Sophia asks.

"None," Leon says. "Whoever sent this wanted us to know they're watching without telling us who they are. Could be Vittorio's people testing the waters. Could be one of the Eight Families doing their own reconnaissance. Could be someone we haven't even considered yet."

Lucien looks around the table at faces that were skeptical of him moments ago and are now something closer to alarmed. "Who is Vittorio?"

A brief, heavy silence answers him before Sophia speaks. "Vittorio De Luca. The most dangerous man currently operating in the underworld, and the only person most of us believe was directly responsible for your father's fall. Officially he is a peacekeeper who maintains balance among the Eight Mafia Families. Unofficially, every family in that circle fears him more than they fear each other."

"And he already knows I exist."

"He may have known before you did," Adrian says quietly. "Vittorio has spent twenty years waiting to see whether Dante's bloodline would resurface. If this message came from him, it means he has decided the waiting is over."

Lucien feels the velvet box in his pocket, the one that once held a future he thought he understood, and realizes how small that heartbreak has already become in the shadow of everything unfolding around him. Three days ago his biggest problem was affording a decent engagement ring. Now men who control continents are sending coded warnings about his existence.

"What happens now?" he asks.

Sophia studies him for a long moment before answering, as though weighing how much truth he can absorb in a single sitting. "Now we decide whether to keep you hidden, which may be impossible given how quickly word is already spreading, or whether we present you publicly and force every family to show their hand at once."

"Publicly," Ronan repeats, unconvinced. "He can barely stand up straight after taking a beating three days ago, and you want to parade him in front of the most dangerous people in the world."

"I can stand up straight just fine," Lucien says, sharper than he intends.

Ronan's eyes flick toward him, assessing rather than mocking. "That wasn't an insult, Young Master. It was an observation. There's a difference between courage and readiness, and right now you have plenty of the first and none of the second."

"Then teach me the second," Lucien says.

The room goes quiet again, but this time the silence carries a different weight, something closer to consideration than doubt. Adrian allows himself the faintest smile.

"Your father used to say something similar, the first time he stood in this room," he says. "Very well. There is an event in three weeks. The Underworld Ball, hosted this year by the Rossi Family in Rome. Every Don of the Eight Families attends without exception, along with their heirs, their closest advisers, and every syndicate leader who wants to remain relevant. It is the single largest gathering of power in our world outside of open war."

"You want to introduce me there," Lucien says.

"I want the world to see Dante's son standing on his own feet before rumor and speculation decide who you are for you," Adrian says. "Three weeks is not long. But it is enough time to prepare you, if you are willing to work harder than you have ever worked in your life."

Lucien thinks of his mother's hands, rough from years of factory work, of every extra shift he picked up to buy her medicine that only ever bought a little more time. He thinks of Chloe's laughter through the bedroom door and Daniel's bodyguards dragging him down a stairwell like something to be discarded.

"I've been working hard my entire life," he says. "I just never had anything worth fighting for before."

Sophia's expression shifts, just slightly, into something that might one day become respect. "Then let's find out what you're capable of, Young Master. Ronan will oversee your physical training. Adrian will handle etiquette, family history, and the political landscape you're about to step into. I will personally ensure you understand exactly how much wealth and how many secrets are now legally yours to inherit, assuming you survive long enough to claim them."

"And me?" Leon asks, raising a hand like a student eager for an assignment.

"You keep watching every relay, every network, every whisper about the De Luca family until we know exactly what we're walking into," Sophia says.

Leon salutes with mock formality, though his eyes remain serious. "On it."

Adrian places a hand briefly on Lucien's shoulder, the gesture of a man finally allowing himself a measure of relief after two decades of searching. "Welcome home, Young Master. I only wish your father had lived to see this day."

Lucien nods, throat tight, and looks once more at the darkened screen where the anonymous message still glows faintly before fading to black. Somewhere out there, a man he has never met already considers him an enemy worth watching. In three weeks, Lucien will have to stand in front of that man and every ally he commands, and convince an entire hidden world that Dante Moreau's blood was worth protecting.

He has no idea yet how badly some of them want him dead before he ever gets the chance.

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT: WHAT MONEY CAN'T BUY

The alarm tears through the compound's lower levels at two in the morning, and Ronan is moving before he's fully awake, the particular instinct of a man who has trained his body to respond faster than his mind can catch up."Report," he snaps into his radio, already pulling on gear in the dark."Financial records facility, sublevel four," the voice crackles back. "Multiple armed intruders. They breached through the maintenance tunnel, not the main entrance."Ronan is already running, weapon drawn, cutting through corridors he could navigate blind if the lights failed entirely. The financial records facility houses years of Vivienne's carefully constructed shell company documentation, the hidden architecture connecting Pandora's legitimate holdings to the empire beneath them, exactly the kind of target that would cripple the organization's financial defenses if it burned. He arrives to find two of his own security team already exchanging fire with intruders in ta

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN: THE LIE AND THE EVIDENCE

The first article appears three days after Meridian's board rejects Ashbourne's offer, and it does not read like an accident of timing.*SOURCES ALLEGE MOREAU CONNECTED TO WAREHOUSE FRAUD SCHEME*, the headline reads, above a photograph of Lucien taken at some distance, unflattering, his expression caught mid word and twisted into something that looks vaguely sinister out of context. The article cites anonymous former coworkers, unverified claims about missing inventory, a pattern of behavior that the piece implies without ever quite stating outright.By the following morning, two more articles have joined it, one alleging a violent altercation Lucien supposedly instigated at his old job, another suggesting ties to activity the piece describes only as criminal without offering a single verifiable detail.Leon has the coordinated funding traced within six hours."All three outlets received payment from the same laundering chain," he says, spreading the trail acros

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX: THE FIRST MOVE

The move comes exactly when Vivienne predicted it would, a Tuesday morning three days into Lucien's training, when Leon bursts into the study with a printout instead of a tablet for once, as though the news deserves the weight of paper."Ashbourne International just filed a tender offer," he says. "Meridian Atlantic Shipping. They're offering thirty percent above market value for controlling shares."Vivienne is on her feet before Lucien fully processes the name. "That's one of ours.""I know," Leon says. "Or I know it's connected to us. I didn't know until this morning how deeply."Sophia pulls up Meridian's ownership structure on the main screen, and Lucien watches Vivienne's face tighten as the layers unfold, holding companies within holding companies, until finally a name appears that means something even to him. "Meridian handles almost all of Pandora's maritime logistics into New York," Sophia says. "If Nathaniel takes it, he doesn't just gain a shipping company. He gains visibi

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE: QUIET ALLIANCES

Sophia finds it while looking for something else entirely, which is usually how the worst discoveries happen. She's tracing Ashwell Maritime's remaining transactions, hunting for any thread connecting back to the ambush that Leon hasn't already pulled, when a payment pattern catches her attention for reasons that have nothing to do with Nathaniel's guilt and everything to do with who he's been talking to since."This doesn't belong here," she murmurs, half to herself, pulling Leon over to confirm what she's seeing."What doesn't?""A series of encrypted calls, routed through a private security firm Nathaniel's used for legitimate business for years. Except these calls aren't going to his usual contacts." She pulls up the destination numbers, cross-referencing them against Leon's growing archive of known associates. "One of them connects to a private line registered under a shell that traces back, eventually, to Kenji Takamura's household staff."Leon's eyebrows lift. "Takamura.""Thre

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR: THE VENDETTA

Daniel doesn't tell his father before the interview airs. He decides that much deliberately, sitting across from a reporter he's paid handsomely to ask exactly the questions he wants asked, in a studio his father doesn't know he's booked."There's been a great deal of speculation," the reporter says, leaning forward with practiced interest, "about Lucien Moreau's sudden emergence as a claimant to significant business interests. As someone who's known him personally, what would you say to those questioning whether he's prepared for that responsibility?"Daniel leans back, comfortable, the humiliation of the ballroom folded somewhere beneath a smile he's been rehearsing for days. "I'd say the questioning is entirely fair. I knew Lucien when he delivered catering to my building. Pleasant enough young man. No formal education past what the state provided. No experience managing so much as a small business, let alone the kind of global interests he's apparently inherited ove

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE: THE OTHER LAURENT

The woman who walks into the study the next morning shares Sophia's bone structure and almost nothing else. Where Sophia moves like a blade kept permanently sheathed, this woman moves like she already owns the room and is deciding whether it's worth the trouble of staying. "Lucien, this is my cousin," Sophia says. "Vivienne Laurent. Chief Executive Officer of Laurent Global Holdings, and the only person alive I trust to run Pandora's legitimate financial network without breaking it." Vivienne extends a hand, her grip firm, assessing. "So you're the boy who's about to start a war with Nathaniel Ashbourne." "He started it," Lucien says. "I'm just the one who noticed." Something flickers behind Vivienne's steel blue eyes, not quite amusement. "Good. I'd have been disappointed if you'd apologized for it." She sets a slim tablet on the table and takes a seat without waiting to be offered one. "Sophia's briefed me on the call. Nathaniel's
