Ronan Voss does not believe in easing anyone into anything, and he makes that clear within the first ten minutes of Lucien's first training session. The private gymnasium beneath the estate is vast, equipped with mats, weapons racks, and a reinforced ring that looks like it has absorbed more blood than Lucien wants to think about.

"Your ribs are still healing," Ronan says, circling him slowly. "Which means today isn't about hitting hard. It's about learning to move so you don't get hit at all."

"I got hit plenty three days ago," Lucien mutters, rolling his shoulder where the bruises have only just begun to fade to yellow.

"I'm aware." Ronan's voice carries no sympathy, only fact. "Two men held you while a third worked you over, and you never once tried to protect your ribs. You covered your face instead. Understandable instinct. Wrong one."

Lucien plants his feet the way Ronan showed him a moment earlier. "So teach me the right one."

For the next hour, Ronan does exactly that, correcting Lucien's stance again and again with blunt, economical instructions, never raising his voice, never offering praise either. Lucien absorbs the drills with a focus that seems to surprise the older man, asking questions that reveal an instinct for adaptation rather than raw aggression.

"You're not fighting like someone who wants to hurt people," Ronan observes during a water break, studying him. "You're fighting like someone trying to survive long enough to think his way out."

"Isn't that the point?"

"For most men, no. Most men who come through this gym want to prove something. You just want to understand the mechanics." Ronan's eyes narrow slightly, reassessing. "Your father wasn't like that. Dante fought like a chess player forced into a boxing ring, always three moves ahead, always looking for the exit before the fight even started."

"You knew him well."

"I served as his personal security for eleven years." Something flickers behind Ronan's controlled expression, gone as quickly as it appears. "I was supposed to be with him the night everything fell apart. I wasn't. I've spent twenty years trying to understand how I failed him, and I still don't have a complete answer."

Lucien studies the man in front of him, broad shouldered and unreadable, and senses a wound far deeper than anything visible on the surface. "You didn't fail him if you're standing here training his son."

Ronan's jaw tightens. "Careful, Young Master. Sentiment is a luxury men like me can't always afford."

"Maybe that's exactly why my father needed you," Lucien says quietly. "Because someone who cares that much doesn't stop trying, even after twenty years."

For a long moment Ronan says nothing at all, simply studying Lucien with an expression that has shifted from clinical evaluation into something warier and more complicated. Finally he nods once, sharp and final, and resets his stance.

"Again," he says. "This time, try to actually hit me."

Lucien does, and fails spectacularly, and gets back up every single time Ronan puts him on the mat. By the end of the session his ribs ache worse than they did after Daniel's bodyguards finished with him, but something in his chest feels lighter than it has in days. For the first time since walking into Chloe's apartment, he feels like he is building something instead of losing it.

Later that evening, Adrian finds him in one of the estate's smaller studies, surrounded by files detailing the histories of the Eight Mafia Families. Photographs of hard, unfamiliar faces stare up at him from the desk. Rossi. Dragunov. Takamura. Mendoza. Al Rashid. Adeyemi. Delacroix. Ashbourne.

"You're already studying," Adrian says, sounding pleased.

"I figured I should know the names of the people who might want me dead," Lucien says, not looking up.

Adrian settles into the chair across from him. "A wise instinct. Though I'd caution you against assuming every family wants your death. Some fear what your existence means for the balance of power. Others may see an opportunity in your survival. The Eight Families have never been a single unified enemy. They've spent decades competing against each other as much as cooperating."

"And Vittorio holds them all together."

"Vittorio holds them together the way a leash holds a pack of wolves," Adrian says. "Through fear disguised as diplomacy. He has spent thirty years positioning himself as the indispensable peacekeeper, the man every family needs to prevent total war. If your father's death benefited anyone more than it benefited Vittorio, I have yet to find them."

Lucien sets down the photograph of Nathaniel Ashbourne, remembering the name Daniel had thrown at him like a weapon three nights earlier. "Ashbourne. That's Daniel's father."

Adrian's eyebrows lift slightly. "You know the family?"

"I know the son." Lucien's voice hardens. "He's the reason I was walking home bruised the night my mother died. He humiliated me in front of the woman I was going to marry, and then his men beat me in the street for daring to argue."

Something shifts behind Adrian's calm expression, a flicker of genuine anger quickly suppressed. "Then it seems fate has already begun settling old scores before you even knew there were scores to settle. The Underworld Ball will be the first time you and Daniel Ashbourne stand in the same room since that night, Young Master. I imagine it will not go the way he expects."

Lucien looks back down at the files spread across the desk, at the faces of men and women who control fortunes and armies he cannot yet imagine, and feels the last soft edges of his old life falling away completely.

"Good," he says quietly. "Let him be surprised."

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT: WHAT MONEY CAN'T BUY

The alarm tears through the compound's lower levels at two in the morning, and Ronan is moving before he's fully awake, the particular instinct of a man who has trained his body to respond faster than his mind can catch up."Report," he snaps into his radio, already pulling on gear in the dark."Financial records facility, sublevel four," the voice crackles back. "Multiple armed intruders. They breached through the maintenance tunnel, not the main entrance."Ronan is already running, weapon drawn, cutting through corridors he could navigate blind if the lights failed entirely. The financial records facility houses years of Vivienne's carefully constructed shell company documentation, the hidden architecture connecting Pandora's legitimate holdings to the empire beneath them, exactly the kind of target that would cripple the organization's financial defenses if it burned. He arrives to find two of his own security team already exchanging fire with intruders in ta

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN: THE LIE AND THE EVIDENCE

The first article appears three days after Meridian's board rejects Ashbourne's offer, and it does not read like an accident of timing.*SOURCES ALLEGE MOREAU CONNECTED TO WAREHOUSE FRAUD SCHEME*, the headline reads, above a photograph of Lucien taken at some distance, unflattering, his expression caught mid word and twisted into something that looks vaguely sinister out of context. The article cites anonymous former coworkers, unverified claims about missing inventory, a pattern of behavior that the piece implies without ever quite stating outright.By the following morning, two more articles have joined it, one alleging a violent altercation Lucien supposedly instigated at his old job, another suggesting ties to activity the piece describes only as criminal without offering a single verifiable detail.Leon has the coordinated funding traced within six hours."All three outlets received payment from the same laundering chain," he says, spreading the trail acros

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX: THE FIRST MOVE

The move comes exactly when Vivienne predicted it would, a Tuesday morning three days into Lucien's training, when Leon bursts into the study with a printout instead of a tablet for once, as though the news deserves the weight of paper."Ashbourne International just filed a tender offer," he says. "Meridian Atlantic Shipping. They're offering thirty percent above market value for controlling shares."Vivienne is on her feet before Lucien fully processes the name. "That's one of ours.""I know," Leon says. "Or I know it's connected to us. I didn't know until this morning how deeply."Sophia pulls up Meridian's ownership structure on the main screen, and Lucien watches Vivienne's face tighten as the layers unfold, holding companies within holding companies, until finally a name appears that means something even to him. "Meridian handles almost all of Pandora's maritime logistics into New York," Sophia says. "If Nathaniel takes it, he doesn't just gain a shipping company. He gains visibi

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE: QUIET ALLIANCES

Sophia finds it while looking for something else entirely, which is usually how the worst discoveries happen. She's tracing Ashwell Maritime's remaining transactions, hunting for any thread connecting back to the ambush that Leon hasn't already pulled, when a payment pattern catches her attention for reasons that have nothing to do with Nathaniel's guilt and everything to do with who he's been talking to since."This doesn't belong here," she murmurs, half to herself, pulling Leon over to confirm what she's seeing."What doesn't?""A series of encrypted calls, routed through a private security firm Nathaniel's used for legitimate business for years. Except these calls aren't going to his usual contacts." She pulls up the destination numbers, cross-referencing them against Leon's growing archive of known associates. "One of them connects to a private line registered under a shell that traces back, eventually, to Kenji Takamura's household staff."Leon's eyebrows lift. "Takamura.""Thre

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR: THE VENDETTA

Daniel doesn't tell his father before the interview airs. He decides that much deliberately, sitting across from a reporter he's paid handsomely to ask exactly the questions he wants asked, in a studio his father doesn't know he's booked."There's been a great deal of speculation," the reporter says, leaning forward with practiced interest, "about Lucien Moreau's sudden emergence as a claimant to significant business interests. As someone who's known him personally, what would you say to those questioning whether he's prepared for that responsibility?"Daniel leans back, comfortable, the humiliation of the ballroom folded somewhere beneath a smile he's been rehearsing for days. "I'd say the questioning is entirely fair. I knew Lucien when he delivered catering to my building. Pleasant enough young man. No formal education past what the state provided. No experience managing so much as a small business, let alone the kind of global interests he's apparently inherited ove

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE: THE OTHER LAURENT

The woman who walks into the study the next morning shares Sophia's bone structure and almost nothing else. Where Sophia moves like a blade kept permanently sheathed, this woman moves like she already owns the room and is deciding whether it's worth the trouble of staying. "Lucien, this is my cousin," Sophia says. "Vivienne Laurent. Chief Executive Officer of Laurent Global Holdings, and the only person alive I trust to run Pandora's legitimate financial network without breaking it." Vivienne extends a hand, her grip firm, assessing. "So you're the boy who's about to start a war with Nathaniel Ashbourne." "He started it," Lucien says. "I'm just the one who noticed." Something flickers behind Vivienne's steel blue eyes, not quite amusement. "Good. I'd have been disappointed if you'd apologized for it." She sets a slim tablet on the table and takes a seat without waiting to be offered one. "Sophia's briefed me on the call. Nathaniel's
