The private jet cuts through clouds high above the Atlantic, and Lucien sits by the window watching the world blur beneath him, unable to shake the feeling that he is leaving behind the last fragments of his old life for good. Across the cabin, Ronan reviews security logistics with two junior operatives in low, clipped tones, while Adrian reads through a briefing on the Rossi family's current internal politics, occasionally murmuring corrections to details Lucien has already memorized.

Sophia sits beside Lucien, uncharacteristically quiet, scrolling through financial reports on a tablet without truly reading them.

"You've checked that same file four times," Lucien observes.

"Force of habit," Sophia admits, setting the tablet down. "It's easier than thinking about everything that could go wrong tomorrow night."

"I didn't think you were the type to worry."

"I'm the type who plans for every possible failure so thoroughly that worry becomes unnecessary," Sophia says. "Tonight, apparently, my planning has reached its limits." She studies him for a long moment, something almost gentle beneath her usual composure. "You've surprised me these past three weeks, Young Master. I want you to know that."

"Is that a compliment?"

"It's an observation," Sophia says, echoing Ronan's earlier words with the faintest hint of a smile. "Your father was brilliant, ruthless, and utterly convinced of his own inevitability. You are none of those things, not yet, and I find myself wondering whether that makes you weaker than him, or eventually stronger."

Lucien considers the question seriously. "Maybe it just makes me different."

"Perhaps." Sophia's gaze drifts toward the window, toward clouds catching the last orange light of sunset. "Different has never been particularly safe in our world. But it has occasionally been powerful, in the hands of the right person."

Leon appears from the rear of the cabin, dropping into the seat across from them with his usual restless energy, though something in his expression suggests he has not slept properly in days. "Got something," he says without preamble. "That altered flight manifest I flagged before we left. Tracked it through six separate shell registrations, but I finally got a partial hit."

"And?" Adrian asks, looking up sharply from his briefing.

"Private jet, departed two days ago, officially registered to a shipping company in Malta that doesn't actually exist beyond a mailbox and a bank account," Leon says. "Destination, Rome, arriving the morning of the ball. No passenger manifest I can access, which in itself tells us whoever is on that flight has resources most private citizens simply don't have."

"Vittorio's operative," Ronan says, joining the conversation, his expression hardening.

"Maybe," Leon says. "Or someone else entirely who's decided this is the moment worth showing up uninvited." He hesitates, glancing toward Lucien. "There's one more thing. The shell company in Malta, the one that filed the flight plan? It's connected, through about four layers of obfuscation, to a private account that pinged briefly against an old Pandora watch list. Nothing recent. Nothing active in almost two decades."

Sophia straightens abruptly. "Show me."

Leon pulls up the trail on his tablet, and Sophia's composed expression falters for the first time since Lucien has known her, something close to genuine alarm crossing her features before she carefully smooths it away.

"What is it?" Lucien asks. "What did you find?"

Sophia is quiet for a long moment, studying the screen as though she does not entirely trust what it is telling her. "That account was flagged twenty years ago," she says finally, "during the final weeks before your father disappeared. It belonged to someone inside his inner circle. Someone we always suspected but were never able to confirm was connected to his betrayal."

The cabin falls silent except for the low hum of the jet's engines. Lucien feels the weight of his father's ring on his hand, heavier suddenly than it was an hour ago.

"You're telling me," he says slowly, "that whoever betrayed my father twenty years ago might already be waiting for me in Rome."

Adrian's expression has gone carefully blank, the look of a man forcing himself not to react until he has more information. "We don't know that for certain."

"But it's possible," Lucien presses.

Sophia meets his eyes, and for once offers him nothing but complete honesty. "It's possible, Young Master. And if it's true, then tomorrow night you won't simply be walking into a room full of strangers deciding whether to accept you. You'll be walking into a room that may already contain the person responsible for everything you lost before you even knew you had it to lose."

Ronan crosses the cabin and takes the empty seat across from them, his expression harder than it has been in days. "Then our security plan changes tonight. I want a second layer of protection around every entrance the moment we land, and I want eyes on anyone requesting last minute credentials for the ball. If someone from inside Dante's old circle is walking back into the light, I intend to know their face before they ever get close enough to shake the Young Master's hand."

"Agreed," Adrian says, though something haunted moves behind his eyes, the look of a man revisiting a betrayal he has spent twenty years trying to bury. "I served beside every person in that inner circle. I trusted them the way I trust the people in this cabin right now. If one of them sold Dante to his enemies, I need to know which one, before I can forgive myself for not seeing it sooner."

"None of us saw it," Sophia says, quiet but firm. "That is the nature of a true betrayal, Adrian. It does not announce itself. It wears the same face as loyalty until the very moment it stops pretending."

Lucien listens to the three of them, veterans of a war he is only now beginning to understand, and feels something settle inside him that is not quite fear and not quite resolve, but some new and unfamiliar mixture of both. "Whoever it is," he says, "they've had twenty years to disappear completely if they wanted to. Instead they're flying to Rome the same week I am. That has to mean something."

"It means," Sophia says, "the timing is not a coincidence. Either they want to see you fail where your father succeeded, or they want something from you they were never able to take from him."

The jet begins its final descent, the lights of Rome spreading out beneath them like a field of scattered stars, and Lucien presses his palm flat against the cool window glass, watching a city he has never visited rise up to meet him. Somewhere down there, a ballroom is already being prepared for tomorrow night, chandeliers polished, tables set, a stage unknowingly built for the reintroduction of a name the underworld thought had died with Dante Moreau.

Outside the window, the last light fades from the sky as the jet continues its descent toward Rome, carrying Lucien Moreau toward a ballroom full of powerful strangers, an empire he barely understands, and quite possibly, the very man who destroyed his father twenty years before he ever had the chance to know him.

He closes his hand slowly into a fist, the weight of the signet ring settling against his palm like a promise.

Whatever waits for him tomorrow night, he will not walk into that room as a frightened boy standing at his mother's grave.

He will walk in as his father's son.

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT: WHAT MONEY CAN'T BUY

The alarm tears through the compound's lower levels at two in the morning, and Ronan is moving before he's fully awake, the particular instinct of a man who has trained his body to respond faster than his mind can catch up."Report," he snaps into his radio, already pulling on gear in the dark."Financial records facility, sublevel four," the voice crackles back. "Multiple armed intruders. They breached through the maintenance tunnel, not the main entrance."Ronan is already running, weapon drawn, cutting through corridors he could navigate blind if the lights failed entirely. The financial records facility houses years of Vivienne's carefully constructed shell company documentation, the hidden architecture connecting Pandora's legitimate holdings to the empire beneath them, exactly the kind of target that would cripple the organization's financial defenses if it burned. He arrives to find two of his own security team already exchanging fire with intruders in ta

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN: THE LIE AND THE EVIDENCE

The first article appears three days after Meridian's board rejects Ashbourne's offer, and it does not read like an accident of timing.*SOURCES ALLEGE MOREAU CONNECTED TO WAREHOUSE FRAUD SCHEME*, the headline reads, above a photograph of Lucien taken at some distance, unflattering, his expression caught mid word and twisted into something that looks vaguely sinister out of context. The article cites anonymous former coworkers, unverified claims about missing inventory, a pattern of behavior that the piece implies without ever quite stating outright.By the following morning, two more articles have joined it, one alleging a violent altercation Lucien supposedly instigated at his old job, another suggesting ties to activity the piece describes only as criminal without offering a single verifiable detail.Leon has the coordinated funding traced within six hours."All three outlets received payment from the same laundering chain," he says, spreading the trail acros

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX: THE FIRST MOVE

The move comes exactly when Vivienne predicted it would, a Tuesday morning three days into Lucien's training, when Leon bursts into the study with a printout instead of a tablet for once, as though the news deserves the weight of paper."Ashbourne International just filed a tender offer," he says. "Meridian Atlantic Shipping. They're offering thirty percent above market value for controlling shares."Vivienne is on her feet before Lucien fully processes the name. "That's one of ours.""I know," Leon says. "Or I know it's connected to us. I didn't know until this morning how deeply."Sophia pulls up Meridian's ownership structure on the main screen, and Lucien watches Vivienne's face tighten as the layers unfold, holding companies within holding companies, until finally a name appears that means something even to him. "Meridian handles almost all of Pandora's maritime logistics into New York," Sophia says. "If Nathaniel takes it, he doesn't just gain a shipping company. He gains visibi

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE: QUIET ALLIANCES

Sophia finds it while looking for something else entirely, which is usually how the worst discoveries happen. She's tracing Ashwell Maritime's remaining transactions, hunting for any thread connecting back to the ambush that Leon hasn't already pulled, when a payment pattern catches her attention for reasons that have nothing to do with Nathaniel's guilt and everything to do with who he's been talking to since."This doesn't belong here," she murmurs, half to herself, pulling Leon over to confirm what she's seeing."What doesn't?""A series of encrypted calls, routed through a private security firm Nathaniel's used for legitimate business for years. Except these calls aren't going to his usual contacts." She pulls up the destination numbers, cross-referencing them against Leon's growing archive of known associates. "One of them connects to a private line registered under a shell that traces back, eventually, to Kenji Takamura's household staff."Leon's eyebrows lift. "Takamura.""Thre

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR: THE VENDETTA

Daniel doesn't tell his father before the interview airs. He decides that much deliberately, sitting across from a reporter he's paid handsomely to ask exactly the questions he wants asked, in a studio his father doesn't know he's booked."There's been a great deal of speculation," the reporter says, leaning forward with practiced interest, "about Lucien Moreau's sudden emergence as a claimant to significant business interests. As someone who's known him personally, what would you say to those questioning whether he's prepared for that responsibility?"Daniel leans back, comfortable, the humiliation of the ballroom folded somewhere beneath a smile he's been rehearsing for days. "I'd say the questioning is entirely fair. I knew Lucien when he delivered catering to my building. Pleasant enough young man. No formal education past what the state provided. No experience managing so much as a small business, let alone the kind of global interests he's apparently inherited ove

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE: THE OTHER LAURENT

The woman who walks into the study the next morning shares Sophia's bone structure and almost nothing else. Where Sophia moves like a blade kept permanently sheathed, this woman moves like she already owns the room and is deciding whether it's worth the trouble of staying. "Lucien, this is my cousin," Sophia says. "Vivienne Laurent. Chief Executive Officer of Laurent Global Holdings, and the only person alive I trust to run Pandora's legitimate financial network without breaking it." Vivienne extends a hand, her grip firm, assessing. "So you're the boy who's about to start a war with Nathaniel Ashbourne." "He started it," Lucien says. "I'm just the one who noticed." Something flickers behind Vivienne's steel blue eyes, not quite amusement. "Good. I'd have been disappointed if you'd apologized for it." She sets a slim tablet on the table and takes a seat without waiting to be offered one. "Sophia's briefed me on the call. Nathaniel's
