Sophia Laurent's office occupies the highest level of the underground compound, a glass walled room overlooking a private garden built entirely underground and lit to mimic natural sunlight. Lucien finds the effect unsettling the first time he steps inside, as though even the sky here has been manufactured for someone else's convenience.

"Sit," Sophia says, not looking up from the array of screens surrounding her desk. "We have less than three weeks and an enormous amount of ground to cover."

Lucien sits. "Where do we start?"

"With the truth about what you actually own." Sophia finally turns to face him, sliding a tablet across the desk. "Your father's estate is not a single fortune. It is layered across seventeen countries, disguised inside hundreds of legitimate corporations, shell companies, real estate holdings, and financial instruments so complex that most of my own analysts only understand fragments of the whole structure."

Lucien scrolls through numbers that mean almost nothing to him at a glance, figures with more zeros than he has ever seen outside of national budget headlines. "This can't all be real."

"It is real, and it is only the portion we can measure," Sophia says. "The rest sits in what your father called the Devil's Vault, a treasury accessible only through authentication protocols we have not yet fully recovered. Billions in liquid assets. Confidential intelligence files. Evidence, according to some of the older records, capable of destabilizing multiple governments."

"Why would he collect something like that?"

"Insurance," Sophia says simply. "Your father understood that raw wealth alone cannot protect a man from betrayal. Leverage can. He spent decades accumulating secrets on every powerful figure who might one day turn against him, and it seems he was right to prepare for exactly that outcome."

Lucien sets the tablet down, overwhelmed by the scale of what he is being told he now owns. "I don't even know how to manage a bank account with more than a few hundred dollars in it."

"Then it's fortunate you won't be managing any of this alone," Sophia says, something almost gentle entering her clipped tone. "I have run Pandora's financial operations for six years. I did not do it because I was ordered to. I did it because your father trusted me with something he trusted almost no one else with, and I intend to honor that trust regardless of whether you turn out to be worthy of it."

"That sounds like a warning."

"It's an honest statement," Sophia says. "I am not interested in flattering a stranger simply because he shares Dante's blood. I watched this organization survive twenty years without a clear leader through discipline and caution. I will not watch it collapse because a grieving young man wants to play at being a king."

Lucien meets her sharp gaze without flinching, recognizing something in her directness that reminds him uncomfortably of his own instincts. "I don't want to play at anything. I watched my mother work herself into an early grave because we never had enough, while apparently my entire life a fortune like this was sitting somewhere waiting for me. I'm not interested in wasting it."

Something in Sophia's expression eases, fractionally. "Good. Because the moment you set foot in that ballroom in Rome, every family present will be calculating exactly how much of this fortune they can pry away from you, through marriage, through manipulation, through outright theft if necessary. Vittorio included."

"Then teach me how to stop them."

For the next several hours, Sophia walks him through the architecture of an empire he never knew existed, corporate structures layered like armor, financial instruments designed to obscure ownership, alliances built and broken across generations. Lucien listens with the same intense focus he brought to Ronan's combat drills, asking questions sharp enough that Sophia occasionally pauses mid explanation, visibly recalibrating her assumptions about him.

"You learn quickly," she admits eventually, somewhere past midnight, the underground garden's artificial sky finally dimmed to suggest a false evening.

"I've had practice learning things quickly when I had no other choice," Lucien says. "Warehouse work doesn't leave much room for slow learners."

Sophia studies him for a long moment, something calculating behind her eyes. "Your father built this empire from nothing but ambition and ruthlessness. You seem to be building your understanding of it from necessity and grief. I find myself curious which foundation produces the stronger ruler."

"Maybe we'll find out in three weeks."

"Maybe we will." Sophia finally allows herself something close to a smile, brief and sharp edged. "Get some rest, Young Master. Tomorrow Adrian begins your etiquette training, and I promise you will find learning to survive a knife fight considerably easier than learning to survive a dinner conversation with Kenji Takamura."

Lucien laughs despite the exhaustion pulling at every muscle in his body, the first genuine laugh he has managed since his mother's funeral. As he rises to leave, Sophia's expression sobers once more.

"One more thing," she says. "Leon intercepted additional chatter tonight, still unconfirmed. It seems Vittorio has already dispatched someone to Rome ahead of the ball. Someone tasked with observing you the moment you arrive, before you ever step into that room."

Lucien pauses at the door. "Do we know who?"

Sophia's eyes flick briefly toward the darkened window, toward a city skyline Lucien cannot see from here but suddenly feels far too aware of. "No. But whoever they are, Young Master, they will already know your face before you know theirs. I suggest you assume every stranger in Rome is watching you until proven otherwise."

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT: WHAT MONEY CAN'T BUY

The alarm tears through the compound's lower levels at two in the morning, and Ronan is moving before he's fully awake, the particular instinct of a man who has trained his body to respond faster than his mind can catch up."Report," he snaps into his radio, already pulling on gear in the dark."Financial records facility, sublevel four," the voice crackles back. "Multiple armed intruders. They breached through the maintenance tunnel, not the main entrance."Ronan is already running, weapon drawn, cutting through corridors he could navigate blind if the lights failed entirely. The financial records facility houses years of Vivienne's carefully constructed shell company documentation, the hidden architecture connecting Pandora's legitimate holdings to the empire beneath them, exactly the kind of target that would cripple the organization's financial defenses if it burned. He arrives to find two of his own security team already exchanging fire with intruders in ta

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN: THE LIE AND THE EVIDENCE

The first article appears three days after Meridian's board rejects Ashbourne's offer, and it does not read like an accident of timing.*SOURCES ALLEGE MOREAU CONNECTED TO WAREHOUSE FRAUD SCHEME*, the headline reads, above a photograph of Lucien taken at some distance, unflattering, his expression caught mid word and twisted into something that looks vaguely sinister out of context. The article cites anonymous former coworkers, unverified claims about missing inventory, a pattern of behavior that the piece implies without ever quite stating outright.By the following morning, two more articles have joined it, one alleging a violent altercation Lucien supposedly instigated at his old job, another suggesting ties to activity the piece describes only as criminal without offering a single verifiable detail.Leon has the coordinated funding traced within six hours."All three outlets received payment from the same laundering chain," he says, spreading the trail acros

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX: THE FIRST MOVE

The move comes exactly when Vivienne predicted it would, a Tuesday morning three days into Lucien's training, when Leon bursts into the study with a printout instead of a tablet for once, as though the news deserves the weight of paper."Ashbourne International just filed a tender offer," he says. "Meridian Atlantic Shipping. They're offering thirty percent above market value for controlling shares."Vivienne is on her feet before Lucien fully processes the name. "That's one of ours.""I know," Leon says. "Or I know it's connected to us. I didn't know until this morning how deeply."Sophia pulls up Meridian's ownership structure on the main screen, and Lucien watches Vivienne's face tighten as the layers unfold, holding companies within holding companies, until finally a name appears that means something even to him. "Meridian handles almost all of Pandora's maritime logistics into New York," Sophia says. "If Nathaniel takes it, he doesn't just gain a shipping company. He gains visibi

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE: QUIET ALLIANCES

Sophia finds it while looking for something else entirely, which is usually how the worst discoveries happen. She's tracing Ashwell Maritime's remaining transactions, hunting for any thread connecting back to the ambush that Leon hasn't already pulled, when a payment pattern catches her attention for reasons that have nothing to do with Nathaniel's guilt and everything to do with who he's been talking to since."This doesn't belong here," she murmurs, half to herself, pulling Leon over to confirm what she's seeing."What doesn't?""A series of encrypted calls, routed through a private security firm Nathaniel's used for legitimate business for years. Except these calls aren't going to his usual contacts." She pulls up the destination numbers, cross-referencing them against Leon's growing archive of known associates. "One of them connects to a private line registered under a shell that traces back, eventually, to Kenji Takamura's household staff."Leon's eyebrows lift. "Takamura.""Thre

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR: THE VENDETTA

Daniel doesn't tell his father before the interview airs. He decides that much deliberately, sitting across from a reporter he's paid handsomely to ask exactly the questions he wants asked, in a studio his father doesn't know he's booked."There's been a great deal of speculation," the reporter says, leaning forward with practiced interest, "about Lucien Moreau's sudden emergence as a claimant to significant business interests. As someone who's known him personally, what would you say to those questioning whether he's prepared for that responsibility?"Daniel leans back, comfortable, the humiliation of the ballroom folded somewhere beneath a smile he's been rehearsing for days. "I'd say the questioning is entirely fair. I knew Lucien when he delivered catering to my building. Pleasant enough young man. No formal education past what the state provided. No experience managing so much as a small business, let alone the kind of global interests he's apparently inherited ove

  • CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE: THE OTHER LAURENT

The woman who walks into the study the next morning shares Sophia's bone structure and almost nothing else. Where Sophia moves like a blade kept permanently sheathed, this woman moves like she already owns the room and is deciding whether it's worth the trouble of staying. "Lucien, this is my cousin," Sophia says. "Vivienne Laurent. Chief Executive Officer of Laurent Global Holdings, and the only person alive I trust to run Pandora's legitimate financial network without breaking it." Vivienne extends a hand, her grip firm, assessing. "So you're the boy who's about to start a war with Nathaniel Ashbourne." "He started it," Lucien says. "I'm just the one who noticed." Something flickers behind Vivienne's steel blue eyes, not quite amusement. "Good. I'd have been disappointed if you'd apologized for it." She sets a slim tablet on the table and takes a seat without waiting to be offered one. "Sophia's briefed me on the call. Nathaniel's
