"My father looked at me like I was already a corpse, and that tearful pity is a ghost I cannot shake."

The silent confession burned in Chen Mo's throat as he stared blankly at the silk canopy of his bed. The luxury of the Sovereign Pavilion felt like a velvet shroud wrapping tighter around his neck with every passing second. Sleep was a distant, impossible luxury. His newly forged iron pathways hummed restlessly, vibrating with a desperate, animalistic instinct that screamed danger.

"They are lying to you," he whispered to the shadows stretching across the room. "Every single smile, every single bow, it is all a theater."

He quietly swung his legs over the side of the jade bed. His enhanced primordial senses pulsed outward, mapping the estate through the heavy silence of the night. He could smell the lingering scent of incense, the faint trace of spilled wine from the banquet, and then, a very specific, agonizingly familiar aroma. It was his father’s spiritual scent, laced with bitter, cheap tobacco and profound, heavy grief.

Chen Mo slipped through the reinforced window, his scaled hand deadening any sound against the stone ledge. He didn't think about the guards. His instincts guided him, pulling him away from the main corridors and down the dark, twisting hallways toward the Grand Patriarch's private study.

"If you get caught, Mo, it’s over," he muttered, pressing his back against the freezing mahogany paneling outside the study doors.

The heavy wood doors were sealed with a low level privacy ward, but his primordial energy sliced right through the vibration. He looked up, noticing the intricate, shadow choked ceiling rafters running directly over the room. He scrambled up the stone pillar, his obsidian scales providing a perfect, silent grip until he was crouched in the absolute darkness above.

"Grandfather, I cannot endure this farce any longer," a sharp, whining voice cut through the room below.

Chen Mo choked back a gasp. It was Chen Feng. The Grand Elder had lied. Chen Feng wasn't under house arrest at all.

"Control your petulance, Feng," Grand Elder Chen Jue’s voice boomed, entirely stripped of the gentle, grandfatherly warmth he had weaponized earlier. "You have played the part of the golden child for twenty years. Do not fail me now when the prize is within our grasp."

"But he sits at your right hand," Chen Feng spat, the sound of glass shattering indicating he had thrown a cup. "The outer disciples are chanting his name. My father looks at me like I am a parasite. I am the true successor."

"Your father is a weak willed coward who cannot see the larger picture," Chen Jue replied, his tone chillingly casual. "He cries for the pig we are fattening for your slaughter."

In the rafters, Chen Mo’s blood turned to liquid ice. The final, fragile threads of hope he had harbored, the childish, desperate wish that his father might actually love him, were violently severed. The pain didn't make him cry this time. It hardened inside his chest, turning into a freezing, razor sharp desire for absolute survival.

"He is not a successor, Feng," another voice groaned from the shadows of the room. It was Chen Lian, his father. His voice sounded older, thoroughly broken. "He is my son. You are asking me to stand by and watch you take everything."

"You signed the decree, Lian," Chen Jue reminded him, the sound of a heavy ledger slamming onto the desk echoing upward. "Do not play the grieving parent now. You knew the moment his primordial blood awakened that his fate was sealed."

"What is the point of the feast tomorrow, then?" Chen Feng demanded, his voice trembling with greed. "Why give him the successor's token?"

"To keep him compliant," Chen Jue explained, a dark chuckle escaping his lips. "An untamed primordial bloodline is volatile. If he panics, if he fights, the energy will corrupt the meat. We need him calm, happy, and trusting. We need his heart pure when we cut it out during the Ancestral Rite."

Chen Mo clenched his jaw so hard his gums began to bleed. His scaled fingers dug deep into the ancient wood of the ceiling rafter, desperate to avoid screaming.

"His heart," Chen Feng breathed, a manic, breathless awe creeping into his tone. "Will it truly stabilize my core?"

"Your Golden Core is crumbling because you lack the ancestral foundation, Feng," Chen Jue said, his footsteps pacing the floor directly beneath Chen Mo's position. "But Chen Mo’s heart carries the true, uncorrupted primordial spark. When we transplant his heart into your chest during the alignment, his bloodline will become yours. You will become a god, and our clan will rule the province."

"And what happens to Mo?" Chen Lian whispered, his voice cracking with a pathetic, hollow sorrow. "He... he won't survive the extraction."

"Of course he won't survive," Chen Jue snapped, completely devoid of empathy. "A vessel cannot live without its core. He was born empty for a reason, Lian. His entire existence was merely a crucible to grow the fruit for his brother. He should be honored to serve the clan in death."

"He looked at me tonight," Chen Lian choked out, a heavy sob escaping him. "At the banquet. He was looking for me."

"Then you should have looked away," Chen Jue barked. "Tomorrow, when he kneels at the altar to receive the token, the binding arrays will activate. He will be paralyzed. He won't feel a thing until the knife goes in."

"I understand," Chen Feng whispered, his voice dripping with sadistic anticipation. "I will be ready, Grandfather."

Chen Mo sat in the suffocating darkness of the rafters, his mind spinning with a cold, terrifying clarity. The entire clan was an illusion. The validation was a lie. The luxury was a trap. They didn't see him as a human being; they saw him as a harvestable organ for the favorite child.

"Meng Yao," he realized, his heart stopping as the pieces fell into place. "They aren't keeping her to protect me. She is the anchor to keep me from running before the rite."

He had to get her out. They had to escape tonight. There was no tomorrow.

Chen Mo shifted his weight, preparing to slide back down the stone pillar toward the window. His mind was racing, calculating the shortest path to the subterranean dungeons, figuring out how to use his Tiger-Grip to shatter her chains before the guards could sound the alarm.

A sharp, agonizingly loud crack echoed through the silent study.

The ancient, dried wood of the ceiling board gave way under the sudden, immense pressure of his scaled hand.

Down below, the conversation died instantly.

"Did you hear that?" Chen Feng whispered, his voice rising in sudden panic.

Chen Mo froze, his breath catching in his throat, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He pressed his body as flat as possible against the rafter, his black scales blending into the deep shadows, praying the darkness would shield him.

"We are not alone," Grand Elder Chen Jue whispered.

The air in the room instantly grew heavy, a terrifying, suffocating wave of blue qi erupting from the Grand Elder’s body. Chen Mo could feel the spiritual pressure rising, threatening to crush him against the ceiling before he could even make a move.

"Who is up there?" Chen Jue demanded.

Slowly, deliberately, the Grand Elder stopped pacing. The rustle of his heavy robes quieted, replaced by a tense, breathless silence that stretched the nerve endings of everyone in the room.

Chen Mo looked down through a small crack in the woodwork.

Grand Elder Chen Jue had snapped his head completely backward, his ancient, crazed eyes locking directly onto the exact patch of ceiling where Chen Mo was hiding. A cruel, knowing smile slowly stretched across the old man’s face, a look that promised absolute, inescapable doom.
