"If this power wants to kill me, it better hurry up, because I am not giving up this body without a fight."

The words tore out of Chen Mo as he shoved the massive, dead weight of the Blood Wolf off his chest. He collapsed into the cold mud right next to the carcass, his breath hitching, his lungs screaming. The terrifying, icy hunger in his chest wasn't fading; it was expanding, twisting his insides into knots. It demanded something. It wanted sustenance.

"What do you want from me?" Chen Mo choked out, gripping his ribs as a violent spasm racked his frame. "Tell me! What do I have to do?"

A dark, crimson glow pulsed beneath the dead wolf's chest, right where its heart should be. The primordial blood in Chen Mo's veins roared in response, a fierce, suffocating pull that dragged his hand toward the beast. He didn't have a choice. He plunged his fingers through the torn flesh, tearing out the glowing, crystalline spiritual core of the beast.

"You have to swallow it," a voice echoed in his skull, layered and terrifying. "Take what is yours."

Chen Mo stared at the bloody, pulsing core in his hand. "This is insane. It's going to burn me alive."

"Do it, Mo," he whispered to himself, his jaw tightening as the memory of his father's cold rejection flashed behind his eyes. "They think you're nothing. Show them. Show all of them."

He jammed the core into his mouth and swallowed.

For a single, agonizing second, there was only silence. Then, a tidal wave of liquid fire erupted in his throat, blasting downward into his chest. Chen Mo screamed, a raw, animalistic sound that tore his vocal cords. He fell back into the dirt, thrashing violently as the ancient energy slammed into his weak, unawakened meridians.

"Stop, please, just stop," he sobbed, his fingers tearing into the wet earth.

The primordial energy didn't stop. It was predatory. It targeted his useless, closed spiritual pathways, melting them down like wax in a furnace. The pain was absolute, an all-consuming torture that made him want to rip his own skin off. Every single connection point in his body was being systematically broken, shattered into dust.

"I won't break," Chen Mo gasped through shattered teeth, his eyes wide, bloodshot, staring blindly at the dark canopy above. "I am not a failure. I am not... a waste."

"Let it burn," the voice in his mind urged, deeper now, merging with his own thoughts. "Rebuild."

"Yes," Chen Mo roared, his voice a ragged snarl. "Take it. Take all of it. Burn the weak parts away!"

He stopped fighting the agony. He opened his heart wide, embracing the devastating heat. If his old body had to die for a stronger one to be born, he would gladly pay the price. He wasn't a broken discard anymore. He was going to be a weapon.

Thick, iron-like pathways began to forge themselves where his frail meridians used to be. The dark crimson energy flowed through them, dense and heavy, settling into his right arm. The bones in his hand cracked and reset, expanding with a dense, terrifying strength. The dark, obsidian-black scales emerged again, fusing perfectly with his flesh, ripples of pure, unyielding power settling into his fingers. The first tier of his bloodline had awakened. The Tiger-Grip.

The final surge of the transformation locked his muscles tight, and Chen Mo let out one last, explosive breath as a massive wave of ancient pressure erupted from his body.

The shockwave blasted outward in a perfect circle, shattering the nearby boulders and ripping the ancient trees out by their roots. A heavy, localized tremor rumbled through the mountain, sending a pillar of dark, crimson light shooting into the foggy sky.

Miles away, at the base of a jagged cliff, a figure in pitch-black shadow-silk armor snapped her head toward the peak.

"Did you feel that?" a voice whispered from the fog behind her.

"Quiet," Meng Yao hissed, her cold grey eyes locking onto the fading red aura in the sky. Her fingers tightened around the hilt of her dark twin daggers. "That wasn't a normal beast awakening. That was something ancient. Something forbidden."

"Could it be the target the elders warned us about?" another assassin asked, stepping out from the dense gray mist, his face obscured by a dark mask. "The bloodline fluctuation from the Eternal Clan?"

"We move now," Meng Yao commanded, her voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. "If anyone else is hunting this source, kill them. The Shadow Demon Sect takes this prize."

Back in the ruined clearing, Chen Mo lay perfectly still, his chest heaving as the liquid fire in his veins finally cooled into a deep, heavy power. He slowly lifted his right hand, staring at the perfect, shimmering black scales that covered his forearm. He flexed his fingers, and the air around his palm distorted with a sharp, heavy crackle of pure physical force.

"This is me," Chen Mo whispered, a dark, breathless smile breaking across his dirt-stained face. He didn't feel the weakness anymore. He didn't feel the shame. "I can kill them. I can kill all of them."

He pushed himself up, the ground beneath his scaled hand cracking under the slight pressure of his weight. The mountain was dead silent around him, the toxic mist swirling into the gaps left by the shattered trees.

"They won't ever call me a cripple again," he said, his voice dropping into a cold, dangerous tone.

He leaned against a thick, surviving trunk to catch his breath, his eyes tracing the intricate, dragon-like patterns on his new skin. The power was intoxicating, a beautiful, violent contrast to the years of neglect he had endured.

A sharp, microscopic whistle sliced through the heavy silence of the foggy woods.

Chen Mo didn't think. His newly awakened instinct took over, his head snapping backward just as a dark, silver dart hissed through the air. The poison-tipped tip buried itself deep into the wood of the trunk, right where his temple had been resting a millisecond before, the toxic fluid sizzling as it began to eat through the bark.
