"If I stay here, I die, so don't you dare look back, Chen Mo."

The whisper tore from Chen Mo’s throat as he crouched behind the jagged perimeter rocks. His chest didn't just hurt, it throbbed with a sickening, heavy heat that threatened to split his ribs apart. Ahead lay the boundary line of the Forbidden Mountain, swallowed by a dense, toxic gray mist that smelled of rot and old blood. Behind him lay the estate that had stripped him of his humanity.

"Hey, did you hear something over by the eastern fence?"

A guard's voice sliced through the dark, accompanied by the sharp clank of iron armor.

Chen Mo pressed his back harder against the freezing stone, his breath catching in his throat. He forced his hand over his mouth to muffle his desperate wheezing.

"Probably just a stray mutt," another guard muttered, his voice fading as their footsteps drifted toward the main gates. "Let it freeze. We have better things to do than watch an empty border."

"Right, let's grab some wine."

Chen Mo waited until the heavy silence returned, his heart hammering against his chest like an angry fist. He didn't hesitate. He dropped to his stomach and slid through the freezing mud, crossing the invisible boundary line directly into the suffocating fog. The air immediately turned bitter, burning the back of his throat with every gasp. From the deep, black valleys ahead, a distant, hunting wail rose up, a sound so lonely and violent it made his skin crawl.

"I am not going back," he whispered to the fog, his fingers digging into the black dirt as he forced his bruised body up the steep incline. "Never."

Hours bled together in the dark. The throbbing in his chest was the only compass he had left, pulling him deeper into a maze of twisted, ancient trees. His legs shook from exhaustion, his lungs screamed for clean oxygen, but the voice from the stables kept echoing in his skull, demanding motion.

Suddenly, the ambient whispers of the forest stopped dead.

Chen Mo froze, his hand resting on a damp, mossy trunk. "Who's there?"

No answer. Only the sound of heavy, wet breathing from the bushes directly in front of him.

"I know you're there," Chen Mo said, his voice dropping into a ragged, defensive edge. He reached down, his fingers wrapping around a heavy, jagged branch on the ground. "Come out."

A pair of glowing, crimson eyes ignited in the low mist. A massive shape rose from the undergrowth, its fur thick, matted, and gleaming with a metallic, gray sheen. It was a mutated Iron-Hide Blood Wolf, its jaw dripping with a foul, yellowish saliva that hissed as it hit the damp leaves.

"Great," Chen Mo breathed, his knuckles turning white around the wooden branch. "Of all the things in this godforsaken mountain."

The wolf growled, a low, guttural vibration that shook the air. It stepped forward, its massive paws leaving deep, heavy imprints in the mud.

"You think I'm just another easy meal, don't you?" Chen Mo’s voice cracked, a hysterical, sharp laugh slipping past his cracked lips. He didn't run. For the first time in his life, when faced with an absolute terror, the urge to beg for mercy didn't come. "Come on then. I've been beaten by experts today. You don't scare me."

The wolf lunged.

"Move," Chen Mo screamed at himself, throwing his body to the left as the massive beast crashed into the space he had occupied a second before. The branch in his hand snapped hard against the wolf's neck, but it felt like striking a solid block of steel. The wood shattered into splinters.

The wolf spun around with impossible speed, its heavy tail catching Chen Mo across the shins. He hit the ground hard, his breath leaving him in a ragged gasp.

"Get up," he choked out, rolling frantically as a massive paw slammed into the dirt right next to his head. "Get up, Mo."

He scrambled backward on his hands and knees, his fingernails tearing as they clawed at the mud, looking for anything, a rock, another branch, a weapon. The wolf stalked closer, its crimson eyes locked onto his throat, savoring the absolute desperation of its prey.

"You want my blood?" Chen Mo stood up, his legs shaking violently, his chest heaving as he stared down the beast. He spit a mouthful of blood onto the grass. "Come and take it. But I'm going to make you choke on it."

The wolf roared, a deafening sound that echoed through the trees, and sprang into the air, its jaws wide open to crush his skull.

Chen Mo didn't dive away this time. He stepped into the strike, throwing his left arm up to block the snapping jaws while using his right hand to drive a sharp stone straight toward the beast's glowing eye.

The wolf's claws slashed across Chen Mo’s chest with terrifying force, ripping through his tattered robes and tearing deep into his flesh.

Chen Mo screamed, a raw, primal sound of pure agony that tore his throat. The impact threw him backward into the dirt, the heavy weight of the wolf pinning him down. He could smell the hot, metallic stench of the beast's breath as its teeth snapped inches from his nose.

"No," Chen Mo grunted, his hands violently pushing against the wolf's thick neck, keeping the jaws away by sheer adrenaline. "I won't die here. Not like this."

The blood from his chest wound should have been pooling into the mud, draining his life away. But as the wolf pressed down, the gaping gash didn't bleed out. Instead, a deep, boiling crimson light erupted from the edges of the wound. The light sizzled, sending waves of intense heat radiating outward, scorching the damp forest floor beneath them.

The wolf whimpered, its crimson eyes widening with a sudden, unnatural panic. It tried to pull back, its heavy iron paws scrambling to get away from the burning light emanating from the human boy.

"What's wrong?" Chen Mo gasped, his vision blurring, his mind spinning from the sheer intensity of the heat waking up inside his bones. The pain in his chest was gone, replaced by an intoxicating, violent surge of absolute power. "Are you scared now?"

The beast made a desperate, panicked sound, snapping wildly to break Chen Mo’s hold.

"You started this," Chen Mo whispered, his voice sounding deeper, heavier, carrying a strange, dual resonance that echoed through the dark woods.

The wolf made one final, explosive effort to tear his throat out, diving forward with all its massive weight.

Chen Mo's left hand shot upward, his fingers locking around the wolf's thick, iron-like neck with a sudden, impossible force. His grip didn't slip. Beneath his skin, rows of dark, obsidian black scales erupted, covering his hand and forearm in a protective, scaly armor that burned with ancient power.

The wolf’s eyes shattered with pure terror as Chen Mo’s grip tightened, crushing the iron fur and muscle like dry leaves.

"Die," Chen Mo growled.

With a single, violent twist of his scaled hand, a sickening crack echoed through the silent clearing as the beast's windpipe and spine shattered completely. The massive wolf went instantly limp, its heavy body collapsing directly over him, its crimson eyes fading into a dull, lifeless gray.

Chen Mo lay beneath the heavy carcass, his breath coming in ragged, uneven gasps as the black scales on his arm began to pulse with a dark, suffocating energy. The heat in his chest didn't recede; it grew colder, sharper, and a dark shadow detached itself from the trees nearby, watching him from the edge of the clearing.
