Victor called before Adrian had finished his coffee.

"I found the R.C. reference."

Adrian put the cup down. "Where does it go?"

"An old client account at Westbridge Legal Services. It belonged to Richard Cole. He used it for restricted company records and for payments tied to the storage sites."

"Does it say where the original registration went?"

"Not straight out. But there's a transfer entry that might explain things."

Adrian got up and walked to the window. "Send it."

"I will. But look at th

Adrian had barely left the hospital when Detective Harris called him back."We found something in the video," Harris said. "You need to see it."Adrian turned back toward the hospital door."What is it?""The man with the scar wasn't alone.""Who was with him?""We can't tell who the second person is yet. But that person walked into the hospital through the main door twenty minutes after Marcus was brought in."Adrian stopped walking."Did they go to Marcus's room?""Yes.""Why didn't your officers stop them?""They got in before we knew Marcus was part of the case. The hospital wrote them down as a visitor. They left before we knew who he was.""Do you have a name?"Harris paused."The visitor signed in as Daniel Cole."Adrian felt a chill."My cousin was kidnapped weeks ago.""I know. We checked with him. Daniel says he wasn't at the hospital."<

  • CHAPTER 55: THE WITNESS IN ROOM 12

A nurse had told Detective Harris the hurt man was stable, but he still hadn't woken up."Do we know who he is?" Adrian asked.Harris shook his head."They're checking his fingerprints. He had no wallet. But he had a photo in his pocket. It shows him with you and your dad."Adrian knew the photo without seeing it. It was an old family picture, from before his life fell apart."Can I see him?""Not yet. The doctor's with him."Adrian looked through the small window in the door. The man lay still under a white sheet. His face was swollen. A bandage covered part of his forehead. He looked older than Adrian remembered. But Adrian had learned not to trust what he saw. Too many people had hidden behind fake names and made-up stories."What happened to him?" Adrian asked."We found him near the hospita

The police had found the car that belonged to Graham Voss. But Graham was gone.At 6:40 that morning, Adrian stood in a police station, watching a traffic camera video on a computer. It showed a dark car leaving the bus station twenty minutes before Marcus Cole's bag was found. The plate matched Graham's car.The camera angle hid the driver's face."Where did the car go?" Adrian asked.Detective Harris paused the video."We tracked it to an underground car park three streets away. Someone left it there. The owner said it was stolen last night.""Did anyone see who left it?""One worker remembers a man with a brown folder. He can't say who it was."Adrian looked at the frozen picture.Marcus had a brown folder when he vanished. A folder like that had gone missing from his old office too.But that didn't prove Marcus was in the car."Can we search it?" Adrian asked."We alre

The police were looking for him, but no one knew where he was.Adrian stood in Victor's office. He was looking at the torn payment sheet from Marcus's old office."Can we trace the account?" he asked.Victor fixed his glasses. "It belongs to Redmont Advisory. But the money went through a legal services account first. Then it went to Marcus's debt account.""So we need to find out who ran the middle account.""That's what I'm trying to do." Victor put another paper on the desk. "The bank kept the payment instructions. We can ask for the full records the legal way.""How long will that take?""A few hours if they help. Longer if they don't."Adrian looked at the clock. "Then let's give them a reason to help."---By noon, Victor had set up

We don't go in until they're there."In the car, Adrian called Marcus. No answer. He called again. Voicemail. He was angry. But under the anger was something else.Fear.Marcus had just said Redmont paid his debts. He had said Voss brought him papers after Richard died. If Marcus vanished now, the truth might vanish with him.Two police cars were already outside the old office. An officer met them at the door. "We found his taxi. The driver left him here about forty minutes ago. He hasn't come out.""Have you been inside?" Victor asked."Not yet. We're waiting for the bui

"Say we need to talk about the payments. Don't tell him about the message."Victor sent it.Adrian looked at Elena. "What about the old register?""The police are taking it to a safe room. We can't touch it until they write down what shape it's in.""Good. I don't want a fight about missing pages. I want a clear record of what's there.""And Peter Shaw?""He's still at the clinic.
