Katarina's eyes widened in shock. "You... you speak my language?"

"I speak many languages," Vanessa said with a small smile. "It's part of my job. Come inside. Let me show you your room."

But Katarina wouldn't let go of Alexander's hand. It took another ten minutes of reassurance before she finally, reluctantly, released him and followed Vanessa inside.

Alexander waited in the living room, staring out at the city lights. When Vanessa returned, her expression was grim.

"She's terrified," Vanessa said. "Whatever she went through before you found her..."

"I know." Alexander turned to face her. "Vanessa, we have a problem. The hooded figure—I fought him tonight. I almost got the ring."

Vanessa's eyes sharpened. "You fought him and survived?"

"More than survived. I was winning." Alexander held up his hands, still amazed by what they'd been capable of. "My body knew what to do. Fighting techniques I've never learned, movements I shouldn't be able to make. It all just... happened."

Alexander had seen enough. Between Victor's disgusting proposition and the oppressive atmosphere of the hospital, he needed to leave before he did something he'd regret. He gently shook Katarina awake."Come on," he said softly in her language. "We're leaving."Katarina's eyes fluttered open, immediately alert despite her exhaustion. "Where are we going?""Somewhere safe. Away from here."She nodded and stood, her hand immediately finding his arm again. As they walked toward the exit, Alexander felt Victor's eyes boring into his back like lasers. The predatory hunger in that gaze made his skin crawl."Alexander!" Victor called out, his voice falsely cheerful. "Leaving so soon? Don't you want to say goodbye to your ex-wife?"Alexander didn't respond, didn't even turn around. He just kept walking, Katarina pressed close to his side.Victor's laughter followed them down the corridor. "That's right, run away! It's what you do best, isn't it? Run away from responsibility, from commitment,

The hospital's sterile white corridors buzzed with activity—nurses rushing between rooms, visitors clutching flowers, the occasional announcement crackling over the intercom. Alexander sat in the waiting area with Katarina pressed close to his side, her fingers wrapped around his arm like she was afraid he might disappear if she let go.Victor stood near the vending machines, pretending to check his phone while his eyes kept drifting to Katarina with barely concealed hunger. Alexander noticed and positioned himself more protectively, which only made Katarina hold tighter. The elevator doors dinged open, and a man stepped out with the kind of confident urgency that commanded attention. Ethan Zhang was impeccably dressed even at this late hour—tailored suit, expensive watch, perfectly styled hair. His eyes scanned the waiting area with laser focus until they landed on the sign pointing toward Lila's room.He strode past Alexander and Victor without a second glance, as if they were part

Victor's eyes widened when he saw Katarina's exotic beauty, lingering on her face with undisguised interest before snapping back to Alexander."So you're the famous Alexander," Victor said with a sneer. "Lila's little mistake. Her one lapse in judgment before she came to her senses and realized she deserved better.""Is that what she told you?" Alexander kept his voice neutral, though his hands clenched tighter."She didn't have to tell me anything. It's obvious." Victor moved closer, trying to use his height advantage to intimidate. "You're a nobody. A shop clerk playing dress-up with borrowed money from whatever sugar mama you've managed to con this week.""If you say so.""I do say so." Victor's smile was cruel. "And I'm saying something else too—stay away from Lila. She's mine now. She doesn't need you hanging around, reminding her of the biggest mistake of her life.""Lila can make her own decisions," Alexander said evenly."Can she?" Victor's eyebrow arched. "Because from what I

City General Hospital's emergency room was chaos when they arrived. Victor had called ahead, ensuring Lila received immediate VIP treatment.Within minutes, she was on a gurney being wheeled into a private examination room. The attending physician, Dr. Morrison, was a stern-faced woman in her fifties who'd seen everything the city's violence could throw at the human body. But even she paused when she cut away Lila's makeshift bandage and examined the wound."Who treated this?" she asked sharply."I... I don't know," Lila admitted. "I was unconscious. When I woke up, it was already done."Dr. Morrison leaned closer, her experienced eyes taking in every detail. "This is remarkable work. Field cauterization, clean removal of the foreign object, precise burning to seal the wound..." She looked up at Lila with newfound respect. "Whoever did this saved your life. Another thirty minutes of bleeding, and you wouldn't have made it.""But it was just... he used gasoline and a hot knife," Lila s

Lila couldn't tear her eyes away from what she was witnessing.Through the pain radiating from her abdomen, through the fog of shock and fear, one truth burned itself into her consciousness with searing clarity: the man fighting that supernatural monster was not the Alexander she'd known for three years. Her ex-husband—the quiet, meek shop clerk who'd never raised his voice, who'd accepted every insult from her mother with bowed head, who'd worked menial jobs without complaint—was fighting like something out of a action movie. No, worse than that. He was fighting like a trained killer. Each movement was precise, economical, deadly. There was no hesitation, no wasted motion. Just pure, brutal efficiency. And when his hand had closed around that creature's wrist, reaching for the ring, Lila had seen something in his posture that terrified her. He'd looked like he belonged in that fight. Like violence was as natural to him as breathing."Who are you?" she whispered, though Alexander coul
