Chapter One: Suite 318

Derek Moss had walked into burning buildings two hundred and thirty-seven times. He had never once hesitated at the door.

Tonight was no different.

The east wing of the Grandview Hotel breathed fire. Black smoke rolled from the third-floor windows in slow, oily waves, and behind the glass, flame moved like something alive, something patient. Guests streamed past him into the night, coughing, half-dressed, clutching each other's sleeves.

Derek pulled his mask down, checked the gauge on his air tank — sixty-eight minutes — and went in against the current.

"Two confirmed victims," the radio crackled against his ear. "Suite 318, third floor, east corridor."

He took the stairs two at a time, one gloved hand riding the rail, the other gripping his Halligan bar like a promise. The smoke thickened with every landing. By the second floor it was a wall. By the third, it was a wall with teeth.

Below him, other units were already fanning out through the lower floors, voices clipped and overlapping on the radio — a room clear here, a hose line advancing there, the ordinary music of a job he'd done so many times it had stopped feeling like danger and started feeling like rhythm. Derek let it wash past him and kept climbing. Somewhere above, glass popped from heat, a small, bright sound swallowed instantly by the larger roar.

He thought, absurdly, of nothing at all. That was the trick of it, the thing nobody explained to you at the academy — that the fire took every thought you had and burned it down to a single clean purpose. Move. Find them. Get them out. Everything else, every argument he'd ever had, every bill unpaid, every long silence at his own dinner table, simply ceased to exist for as long as the building was on fire around him. It was, if he was honest with himself, the only part of his life that still felt uncomplicated.

He dropped low and moved by memory and touch, counting doors along the corridor with his fingertips through the glove.

The carpet had started to bubble under the heat. Somewhere above him, something structural groaned.

He drove his boot into the door beside the lock — once, twice — and the frame gave with a splintering crack.

Two shapes huddled by the far window, a man and a woman pressed together in matching hotel robes.

"Fire department! I've got you — we go out through the—"

He stopped.

The woman turned.

Three years of marriage had taught him every line of that face — the sharp cheekbones, the brows arched just so, the way her expression could shuffle through six emotions in a second and land, always, on whichever one served her best.

Erin. His wife.

"What are you doing?" she snapped, over the roar of the fire. "Stop standing there like an idiot and get us out!"

She didn't recognize him behind the mask.

Derek looked at her. Then at the man beside her — young, handsome, coughing wetly into one fist while his other hand stayed wrapped around Erin's waist like he had every right to it. A monogrammed robe hung open over nothing.

Derek made himself speak. "Let's move. Now."

"Wait." Erin pointed at his mask. "Give it to Mike."

"What?"

"Your mask. Give it to him. Do you have any idea who he is?" She said it the way you'd explain something to a slow child. "He's the heir to Pinnacle Corporation. If something happens to him, you will be in serious trouble."

Derek looked at her for a long moment.

Then, like he always did, he gave her what she wanted.

He took off the mask.

"Derek?" The color went out of Erin's face. For one heartbeat, something like fear. Then the fear hardened into something else — defensiveness, quick and practiced. "Why didn't you say it was you? Derek, I can explain—"

"Save it." He shoved the mask into Mike's shaking hands. "Both of you. Now."

They went out through the smoke together, Mike stumbling, Erin walking stiff-backed and furious, as if she were the one who'd been wronged.

They were halfway down the second-floor stairwell when the building screamed.

A pressure wave tore through the stairwell and knocked the air out of Derek's chest a half-second before the ceiling came down.

He didn't think. His body moved on its own — turning, throwing himself over Erin, curling around her as the beam hit.

It caught him across the left leg.

The pain was white and total, a sound before it was a feeling. He heard himself grunt — the sound of a man absorbing something enormous and refusing to let it stop him. He got his palms flat against the floor, shoved the beam sideways with everything he had left, and dragged his leg free.

Erin lay beneath him, untouched, dust caught in her hair.

Their eyes met.

For one absurd second, Derek thought he saw something soften in her — regret, maybe, or the ghost of love.

Then her gaze slid past him to Mike.

She pulled free without a word and hurried to him instead.

The rest of it came in pieces. Smoke. Heat. A leg that turned every step into an argument with his own body. The lobby doors. Cold air that didn't feel like relief.

Paramedics worked over his leg while he answered their questions on autopilot — yes, I can feel my toes, no, I didn't black out, yes, I know today's date — his eyes cutting past their shoulders into the chaos, searching.

"Sir, hold still," the younger paramedic said, not unkindly, pressing gauze to a gash above his knee he hadn't even registered until she pointed it out. "You took a direct hit from a structural beam. You're lucky it isn't a lot worse."

"I've had worse," he said, which wasn't quite true, and kept scanning the crowd spilling from the lobby — guests wrapped in silver blankets, coughing, faces streaked black. Faces he didn't know. Faces that weren't hers.

Where was she?

There was no sign of Erin or Mike. Only flame consuming the hotel floor by floor, and sections of the roof folding into the smoke.

It looked painfully familiar.

Like his marriage — burning long before it had the decency to finally fall down.

He signed the discharge waiver against the medic's advice, and the cab ride home took eleven minutes. Getting out of the cab took nearly as long. He dragged himself up the walk, every step driving the pain deeper.

After every fire, that porch light had meant something. Warmth. Home. Tonight it looked colder than the building he'd just left.

He was three steps from the door when his leg buckled and put him down hard on the concrete. He caught himself on both palms.

That was when he heard it.

"This steak is huge, babe," Mike said, slow and lazy, from somewhere inside. "You sure you can handle all that?"

Erin's answer came low, unmistakable. "I handled you just fine."

Laughter. Shameless. Happy.

Something in Derek went white.

He sat there on the cold concrete for a moment, listening to the woman he had carried out of a burning building an hour ago laugh at something a man in his own pajamas had said. He thought about walking away. He thought about sitting there until the painkillers dulled the leg enough to stand and simply turning around, driving to the station, sleeping in a bunk that at least belonged to no one else.

He didn't do either of those things.

He swallowed two painkillers dry, forced himself back onto his feet, and put his fist through the door.
