Chapter 4
ALEJANDRO was enraged, and his tears kept falling. Not because Helena has broken up with him, but because of his hatred for her. He still can't believe she dumped her that effortlessly.
He was brimming with fury and he wanted to go back inside, but there was no way he could, no matter how many times he tried.
Alejandro reverted to his motorbike, exasperated when he got a phone call from Helena. His brow wrinkled slightly.
"Now, what do you want!? Are you going to lie to me again!? Claiming that what happened earlier was all a joke and your foolish drama!" Alejandro yelled frantically as he answered the phone.
"I'm not calling because I want to recant my words, Alejandro; what happened earlier was because of your stupidity, not mine! I'm warning you! Quit messing with me or you'll freaking regret it!"
After hearing Helena's words, his jaw dropped.
"You're unbelievable! I can't believe you're acting this way just because Diego has all the wealth you desired! You're such a dramatic actress!"
"I don't care what you want to say to me, Alejandro! Judge me all you want, but you can't stop me from ending our relationship with you! I'm so sick of you! And this will be the last call you will ever receive from me! Quit bothering me and just quit!" Helena yelled at Alejandro, then abruptly hung up.
Because of his aggravation, Alejandro pounded the seat of his motorbike. Helena is really insane. And as he was attempting to digest everything, he received a phone call from Jero.
"Hello, Jero?" he said, struggling to keep his voice clear. He was trying to hold back his tears.
"Where are you? I can't come up with a long alibi here; come back now before manager George notices you've been gone for nearly two hours."
He let out a sigh.
"I'll be right back," he said as he hung up the phone on Jero.
Alejandro is forced to ride his motorbike despite his unfortunate break up. He returned to his work right away.
JERO hurriedly walked towards Alejandro as he returned to the office.
"Hey!? What took you so long? Our manager already knows you've been gone for about two hours; he checked the cameras. I tried to reason with him, but he won't believe me," Jero apologized.
Alejandro sighed, settling into his swivel chair.
"Are you okay? Have you talked to Helena yet?" Jero inquired as he sat alongside him.
"We're done; she already dumped me."
"How easy is it?"
"Yeah, she easily ditched me like that. She didn't even give me a solid reason why she did cheat on me! She even lied to Mr. Chan. I looked horrible in front of others, Jero! I am the victim here!" he replied, frustrated.
Jero tapped him on the shoulder.
"I don't know what to say, man; I had no idea she was your girlfriend—ex-girlfriend, I mean."
"Because she intended it that way. She wanted to keep me away from others. I had no idea she'd trick me like this! I'm such an idiot thinking she's simply doing this because I'm poor!"
"Don't say that, dude; maybe she just stopped loving you."
He sighed in frustration and smeared his face with his palms.
"I don't believe she simply fell out of love with me; I know she did it for a reason."
"You'll have to talk to her again."
"I'm not sure. She warned me not to talk to her again."
Alejandro sighed once again. Suddenly, while they continue to discuss what transpired. Manager George approached their table.
"In my office," manager George stated authoritatively.
Alejandro stood up and went to manager George's office.
"Where have you been? I've been looking for you, but you're not at your desk. Jero said you had an emergency; is it a life and death situation? You've been gone for about two hours," manager George chastised him.
"I'm very sorry; I forgot to check the time," he said.
"You know I'm still not going to grant you an exception for this Alejandro; you're suspended for two days for leaving your workplace without my authorization; do you understand your consequences?"
"Yes, I understand that," Alejandro said sparingly.
He then swiftly departs manager George's office. He returned to his table and gathered his items.
"Did he punish you?" Jero inquired. He gave him a look.
"Yes, but only for a two day suspension."
"What are you going to do now?"
"I'm not sure yet, but don't worry about me, Jero; I'll be alright; I'll just solve my problem on my own."
"Don't worry, buddy. I'll keep you updated on what's going on here while you're gone," Jero assured him. Alejandro simply nodded.
Alejandro had finished cleaning up his table. He walked right up to the elevator. Helena, to his surprise, was inside the elevator. He went inside and stood near Helena without hesitation. He also observed she had a bodyguard with her.
Alejandro can't stop smirking while clenching his jaw.
"What a coincidence to see you here; I was expecting you to retire now that your sweetheart is affluent enough to offer you anything you desire," he added.
"I don't have time to convey my point of view to you, Alejandro, and even if I did, you'd never understand."
He hisses, his face is contemptuous.
"Try me, because as far as I know, you're the one at fault here, not me," Alejandro stated emphatically.
"Shut up!"Helena shouted. He grinned.
"Is that all you can say? To shut me up!? Hell no, Helena! You're not in charge here! I am!" he replied, firmly facing her.
When the elevator doors opened, he pulled the bodyguard outside and quickly closed the elevator. After that, he pressed the emergency stop button. The elevator came to a halt on the third floor.
"What the heck are you doing, Alejandro!" Helena exclaimed, scared.
"Stop acting like you're afraid of me, Helena! Because that's nonsense! Now we're alone! Tell me why you cheat on me!? Is it because I'm poor!? Is it because I can't provide you with a wealthy life as Diego did? Is he better in bed than me!? Tell me!" Alejandro slammed the elevator wall.
Helena was taken aback and lost her words for a second.
"Answer me! I deserve to know the truth! I deserve a reasonable explanation, Helena!"
"Okay! Fine! I broke up with you because you can't satisfy me! You can't give me what I want! And I don't want to grow old with you being impoverished!" Helena yelled at him and pressed the stop button. The elevator regained power and opened the door.
Helena walked away before he could touch her arm. Her bodyguard leaped on him and pinned him against the wall right away. He fights back and struggles. He avoided the bodyguard's grasp, but he was punched hard in the face. He collapsed on the ground, his bottom lips gushing.
"You deserve it, bastard!" Helena said as she stormed out the door.

Chapter 24The first time Alejandro saw the new prisoner up close, it was in the yard. His name is Vargas, and he didn’t look like a man trying to keep his head down. He stood with a group of guards, laughing like he owned the place. His presence was loud, magnetic even, pulling the curious and the dangerous alike into his orbit. Tattoos coiled up his neck, faded and old gang markings mixed with military symbols Alejandro recognized from a past life.Rocco muttered from his side. “That’s not the walk of a man who’s done time. That’s the walk of a hunter.”Alejandro didn’t answer. He watched as Vargas lit a cigarette offered by a guard, too friendly, too familiar and scanned the yard with the eyes of a predator. Those eyes locked onto Alejandro like crosshairs. Then Vargas smiled. It wasn’t the grin of an ally. It was a promise.THAT night, Alejandro stayed awake. Every creak of the cell block felt louder. The scrape of boots against concrete. The low hum of whispers. He’d survived one

Chapter 23The days inside the prison grew darker, not because the lights dimmed, but because the eyes around Alejandro sharpened. Trust was a rare currency in jail, and Alejandro had run out of it the moment news about his betrayal to Diego reached the wrong ears.Alejandro had always been a man of instinct. He knew how to read people—the twitch of an eye, the sudden silence of a room, the way someone gripped their utensils during lunch. Lately, he noticed the change. The shift. People didn’t just avoid him now. They studied him.Conversations stopped when he entered the mess hall. Inmates who once nodded in greeting now turned their backs. It wasn’t fear he saw in their eyes. It was a calculation. Like they were measuring him. Weighing him. Waiting. He sat at lunch beside Rocco, the only person who still gave him the time of day. Rocco had been inside for years. He knew how the system worked. How things moved under the surface.“You feel it too?” Alejandro asked without looking at h

Chapter 22The prison yard was sweltering under the afternoon sun, but Alejandro didn’t feel the heat. His mind was racing.Every breath, every step, was calculated now. He wasn’t just surviving—he was plotting.Three days had passed since the letter was smuggled out. Three days of waiting for a sign, any sign, that Mateo’s sister had received the message. That the ledgers—the proof—were real and intact.Rocco joined him by the fence, casually handing him a packet of stale crackers as cover. “She got it,” he muttered under his breath. “The package is safe.”Alejandro’s fingers tightened around the plastic. “And she’s willing to talk?”“Scared, but yes. She wants immunity before handing over anything.”Alejandro nodded. “We can work with that. All we need is someone on the outside with a spine.”“Easier said than done,” Rocco said grimly. “Diego’s reach is long. Even the damn guards here act like they owe him favors.”“I don’t need a whole army,” Alejandro said, his voice low. “Just on

The lights never really turned off. But he was no longer sitting still. He had begun to listen. The inmates around him weren’t saints—thieves, smugglers, con artists—but they talked. And when Alejandro listened, he started to hear patterns. Names. Events. Whispers about politicians, bribes, and shady deals—including some too familiar to ignore.“Diego Chan?” one inmate said one evening while playing cards. “That guy’s everywhere. His company’s got half the justice system in their pocket.”Alejandro stiffened from where he sat nearby.“You know him?” he asked casually. The guy—lean, tattooed, mid-forties—looked over at him. “Why? You got beef with Diego?”Alejandro smirked bitterly. “Something like that.”The man, whose name was Rocco, leaned in. “You’re Alejandro Garcia, aren’t you?”Alejan
