Chapter 25

Philip watched Elena walk toward her parents and the boys, but his eyes remained on her for a few seconds longer.

Something was definitely wrong.

He had seen the fear in her eyes when the phone rang. He had seen the way her hands trembled when the message arrived. Most importantly, he had seen how quickly she had hidden the phone from him.

Whatever was happening, Elena was determined to keep it away from him. And also, she was cool with staying alone.

Chapter Eighty Philip had barely settled into his office when Linda walked in with a folder pressed against her chest. She stopped when she saw him staring at the papers on his desk without turning a page."Are you planning to read those documents with your eyes closed, or should I come back later?"Philip raised his head. "I didn't hear you knock.""I knocked twice." Linda walked closer and dropped the folder on his desk. "Then I started wondering if you had finally decided to resign from your own company."“This is not my company, Linda. I am just a worker like you.” Linda walked further inside. She closed the door behind her revealing a backless top she wore. Philip felt a beat between his two chests before she turned to look at him. Despite himself, Philip smiled."Would you miss me?"Linda lifted an eyebrow. "Professionally or personally?"He leaned back in his chair, studying her face. "Is there a difference?"He was sure Linda asked on purpose. "There is a very big differe

Chapter Seventy nine Elena was waiting in Philip's office when he arrived. She gazes through the opulent mirror watching each car drive in and out of the company. The moment she saw Philip drive into the company's ground, Elena straightened her well ironed suit and walked back a bit. She stood beside his desk, holding a folder against her chest. The moment he entered, she looked up."Where have you been?"Philip closed the door behind him. He simply walked past her and took off his jacket."Good morning to you too.""Don't do that, Philip. I've been trying to reach you."Elena's gaze furrows slightly. "I was busy. Don't you understand that?” "With what? Huh?” He loosened his tie and took a seat."Work," he muttered. Elena followed him with her eyes."You weren't answering your phone. Why aren't you answering?” she asked."I was in a meeting."“Jesus Christ, Philip. We have been doing this for how long now.”“Doing what?” Philip dropped his pen and looked at Elena’s face. She s

Chapter Seventy Eight The waitress placed the coffee in front of Philip and stepped away. For a few seconds, neither man spoke.Philip stared at Mark, waiting for him to continue. The interruption had done nothing to ease the tension building inside him."You were saying something about the trustee," Philip reminded him.Mark glanced around the café before lowering his voice."I was about to say that I found the same trustee's name in another document. This time, it wasn't connected to the company that paid Dr. Hayes."Philip leaned forward."Then what was it connected to?""The private medical facility you visited in 2009."Philip's fingers tightened around the edge of the table."Explain."Mark opened the envelope again and removed a photocopy of an old administrative record."The facility kept a list of external organizations that paid for certain services. Most of the entries were ordinary payments from insurance companies and private institutions. But this company was different.

Chapter Seventy-SevenPhilip barely slept that night.Every time he closed his eyes, he remembered the mysterious man's words. The date had been sitting in front of him for days, hidden in the files he found on Elena's secret phone. Until tonight, he had treated it as another suspicious detail connected to the DNA investigation. Now, he wasn't so sure. The man had known his original surname. He had known about the DNA test, and he had spoken about the original medical records as though he understood exactly why they mattered.Philip couldn't tell whether the man wanted to help him or was simply using him to get something from Elena. But one thing was certain: he knew more than he was willing to reveal.Beside him, Elena shifted beneath the covers."Philip?"He turned his head, "Yes?""Are you still awake?" She asked "Unfortunately. I can't sleep.” he replied She let out a small laugh, then moved closer to him."You've been acting strangely since the gala. You barely spoke to me on

Chapter seventy sixPhilip stood still, his gaze hardened but fixed on the man standing in front of him. "Because some secrets are much older than your marriage."Philip grabbed his jacket,"Tell me what happened to me that day.""Not here.""Then where?"The man glanced at the card in Philip's hand."You have my number. Call me when you're ready to hear something that might make you question everything you believe about your past."Philip shook his head. He had originally believed that the man had something to do with his children but now, he seems to be another reporter trying to make some money off his family's information."You expect me to trust you after threatening my family?""I don't expect you to trust me. I expect you to investigate."He stepped away from the table."And Philip?""What?""Don't tell Tyrel about this conversation. If he discovers that we've spoken, he might decide that keeping you ignorant is no longer enough."Before Philip could ask another question, the m

Chapter Seventy-FiveFor several seconds, the mysterious man said nothing.Philip tightened his grip on the man's arm, watching his face for any sign that might reveal the truth."Why aren't you answering me?" Philip demanded. "Are you one of my sons' fathers?"The man slowly lowered his gaze to Philip's hand."You seem to have developed a habit of grabbing people whenever they refuse to answer your questions.""Then stop giving me reasons to do it."A faint smile crossed the man's face, but it disappeared almost immediately."Let go of me, Philip. We both know this conversation won't end well if you lose your temper."Philip released him, though he remained standing between the man and the exit."I'm waiting.""And I'm deciding whether telling you anything is worth the trouble it will bring me."Philip stared at him in disbelief."You approached me. You gave me your number, brought up my children, and started talking about my father-in-law. Now you're acting as though I'm the one wa
