The threat hung in the air between them, heavy and suffocating, more promise than warning.

Penelope stood there trying to catch her breath, one hand still pressed against her throat where Damian's fingers had been wrapped around it just moments ago. She could feel her pulse hammering beneath her skin, could taste the fear that had flooded her mouth when she thought he might actually crush her windpipe right there on her own doorstep. Her chest heaved as she gulped down air, each breath burning as it traveled down her abused throat.

But even through her discomfort, even through the lingering terror that made her hands shake, something else began to surface. Pride. Arrogance. The absolute certainty that came from belonging to a family that had grown so powerful over the past five years that they believed themselves untouchable.

She straightened herself as much as she could manage, trying to reclaim some of the dignity that Damian had stripped away when he'd lifted her off her feet like she weighed nothing at all.

"You cannot do anything to us," she said, her voice still hoarse and rough but gaining strength with each word. "Is it just because I allowed you to hold me by my neck? Because I didn't fight back? I'm just a lady, a woman. What do you expect me to do against someone like you?"

She rubbed at her throat again, feeling the tender spots where his fingers had dug in, knowing there would be bruises there by tomorrow morning.

"But let me tell you something, and you better listen carefully because I'm only going to say this once. The Nathaniel family is not who you think we are anymore. We're not the same people you left behind five years ago when you went off to play soldier."

Her eyes narrowed, and a bitter smile played at the corners of her lips.

"Yes, we have grown. We have grown a hundred times more powerful, more influential, more connected than we were back then. And even back then, we were already far above your station. But now? Now we are untouchable. We move in circles you can't even dream of entering. We have connections that reach into every corner of this country, connections that could crush you like an insect and nobody would even blink."

She took a step forward, emboldened by the mention of her family's power, forgetting for a moment exactly what this man had just done to a fully operational excavator with his bare hands.

"You cannot do anything to us, Damian. You will not be able to do anything. Do you understand me? Whatever strength you think you have, whatever you learned out there in the war, it means nothing here. Nothing."

She paused, watching his face for any reaction, any sign that her words were having an effect. When she saw none, when his expression remained as cold and hard as stone, something twisted in her chest. But she pushed forward anyway, driven by years of looking down on people she considered beneath her.

"Now, unless you want to completely destroy any chance you might still have with Mabel, though I can't imagine why she would still want anything to do with you, but if you care about that at all, then you need to watch yourself very carefully."

A cruel light entered Penelope's eyes, the kind of gleam that came from knowing you were about to twist a knife that was already buried deep in someone's gut.

"But you know what? Just wait and see. Wait and see her new fiancé. Because they're getting married, Damian. Your wife, the woman you left behind five years ago believing she would wait for you forever like some faithful puppy, she's moved on. She found someone better, someone worthy of the Nathaniel name."

The words came faster now, fueled by malice and the desire to hurt him as much as he had hurt her.

"In fact, they're having an engagement party right now, today, at this very moment, at the main Nathaniel mansion. A grand celebration with hundreds of guests, people who actually matter in this world. Everyone who's anyone in this city is there right now, celebrating Mabel's engagement to a real man, not some nobody who crawled out of the gutter."

She laughed, a sound that held no warmth, no joy, just bitter satisfaction.

"You just destroyed my entire day, ruined my schedule completely. I was supposed to be at that party an hour ago, but instead I'm standing here dealing with you. You disrespected me, a Nathaniel, grabbed me by the throat like I was some common street trash. Do you have any idea what you've done? You're going to pay for this. You're going to pay dearly for laying your filthy hands on me."

Penelope took another step back, creating more distance between herself and Damian, her survival instincts finally overriding her pride.

"And let me tell you about Mabel's fiancé, since you seem so concerned about your dear wife. His name is General Raymond, and he's not just any general. He's a ten-star general. Do you understand what that means? Can your simple mind even comprehend the significance of those words?"

Her voice rose with each sentence, gaining a hysterical edge.

"A ten-star general in this country is basically royalty. He has power that extends beyond just military command. He has influence in the government, in business, in every sector that matters. One word from him and people disappear. One command and entire families get erased from existence. That's the kind of man Mabel is marrying. That's the kind of protection the Nathaniel family has now."

She wrapped her arms around herself, whether from lingering fear or from the cold satisfaction of delivering this news, it was hard to tell.

"So you cannot do anything to us, Damian. You will not be able to do anything, no matter how strong you think you are, no matter what you accomplished in the war. Because if you try, if you even think about coming after this family, General Raymond himself is going to put you in the ground. He's going to send you to the same place where your mother is resting. You'll be rotting in that abandoned grave right next to her, forgotten and worthless, just like you've always been."

The cruelty in her voice reached new heights as she delivered her final blow.

"And here's something else for you to choke on while you're running off to find your pathetic sister. That land where your mother is buried? It belongs to me now. I don't care what you say, I don't care what you think you have a claim to. That property is mine, the paperwork has been processed, and I'm going to sell it regardless of what you want. Whether you like it or not, whether you cry about it or rage about it, that land is being sold."

She straightened her clothes one final time, trying to look dignified despite the red marks already forming on her throat.

"So go ahead, run to Zed Bar like a good little dog and search for your sister. Maybe you'll find her alive, maybe you won't. I honestly don't care either way. But when you're done playing hero, when reality finally sets in and you realize just how powerless you really are, don't come back here. Don't show your face at this house again. Because next time, I won't be alone, and next time, you won't walk away."

Her lips curved into a final, venomous smile.

"The Nathaniel family always wins, Damian. Always. And you were a fool to ever think you belonged in our world. Now get off my property before I call security and have you removed like the trash you are. That land is mine, and I'm going to sell it regardless."

The older man nodded enthusiastically, his laughter subsiding into a cruel smirk."Things like this, if she had just actually allowed us to have our way with her from the beginning, none of this would have happened. Huh? None of this pain, none of this blood. But she pushed us to this point. She forced us to inflict this punishment with her stubborn refusal and her ridiculous resistance."He gestured at Rebecca's motionless form with his whip, as casually as if he were pointing out furniture."And this? This is just the beginning. We were just waiting for her to regain a little bit of consciousness, a little bit of strength, so we could continue. Because what's the fun in beating someone who can't even feel it anymore?"The younger man's eyes gleamed with sadistic anticipation."And this time around, you are going to stand there and watch. That is the most interesting part, the part that makes this whole situation so delicious. You're going to stand there, big bro, and watch everythin

At that moment in time, upon hearing the three words that had just left Damian's mouth, delivered in that low, deadly whisper that promised violence beyond imagination, the atmosphere in the room shifted completely. The two men with whips finally turned around to see who had dared to interrupt their entertainment. But as their eyes adjusted to the figure standing in the doorway, they realized they weren't alone in the VIP room. This wasn't just some private party between two sadistic bastards and their victim. There were six men total in that space, Damian now realized as his eyes swept across the scene with cold calculation. Six of them. The two with whips, and four others seated on the plush leather couches that lined the walls, drinks in their hands, watching the torture like it was a theater performance put on for their amusement. Some had loosened their ties and shed their suit jackets. Others still looked pristine, as if they'd just come from a business meeting and decided to st

His expression hardened into something that made the young woman take an involuntary step backward."You need to start leaving now," Damian said quietly, his voice carrying a weight that made it sound less like a suggestion and more like a prophecy. "Get out of this area. Go to the back, go outside, go anywhere that's not here. Because all hell is going to break loose very soon, and I don't want you caught in the middle of it."Without waiting for her response, without giving her a chance to argue or plead with him further, Damian turned and walked with deliberate purpose toward the VIP section. The hallway leading to the private rooms was dimmer than the main bar area, lit only by small wall sconces that cast long shadows across the worn carpet. The walls were painted a deep red that looked almost black in the low light, and the doors lining either side were heavy wood with brass numbers bolted to them.VIP Room 1. VIP Room 3. VIP Room 5.Damian's eyes scanned each number as he passe

At that moment, upon hearing the words that had just left the lady's mouth, Damian was taken aback, his entire body going rigid as if someone had just slapped him across the face."The little witch?" he repeated slowly, the words tasting foul on his tongue. His brow furrowed in confusion and growing dread. "What are you talking about? The little witch?"He shook his head, trying to push past the anger and fear clouding his thoughts."I don't actually know anyone by that name. Her name is Rebecca. Rebecca Cross. That's who I'm looking for."Immediately the young woman let out a short, bitter laugh that held no humor whatsoever, just the weary cynicism of someone who'd seen too much ugliness in her short life."Yes, I know you don't know her as the little witch. Nobody comes in here asking for the little witch by that name." She shifted the tray of glasses to her other hip, her expression a mixture of pity and something darker. "We call her that just because of the way she behaves. Yeah

Meanwhile, the taxi carrying Damian wove through traffic, the driver sensing his passenger's urgency and taking shortcuts wherever possible. Damian sat in the back seat, his hands clenched into fists on his thighs, his jaw locked so tight it ached. Every second felt like an eternity. Every red light felt like a personal insult from the universe. His mind kept circling back to Penelope's words, the casual cruelty in her voice when she'd talked about breaking Rebecca, about crushing her down until she became a shadow of herself. What did that mean? What had they done to his little sister while he was gone?Rebecca had only been twenty years old when he left for the war. She'd been bright, full of life, with dreams of becoming a teacher. She loved books and children, spent her free time volunteering at the local school even though they barely had enough money to feed themselves. She'd been so excited when Damian married into the Nathaniel family, believing it meant a better life for both

Damian stood over Penelope, who had collapsed back onto the floor during her rant, his shadow falling across her like a dark omen. His voice came out flat, emotionless, which somehow made it even more terrifying than if he'd been shouting."If you have a death wish, just let me see you in front of that land again. Just show your face there one more time, and you are going to die. I'm not making a threat. I'm making a promise."He crouched down slightly, bringing his face closer to hers so she could see the absolute certainty in his eyes, the complete lack of hesitation or doubt."But like I said before, this is just the beginning of what I'm going to do to you and the entire Nathaniel family. This is nothing compared to what's coming. So pass my message to them. Tell them that I'm back. Tell them that I'm coming for every single one of them. Tell them to prepare themselves, because the storm that's about to hit them won't leave anything standing."He straightened up and turned to leav
