Ethan's eyes opened to darkness. The basement ceiling stared back at him like the inside of a coffin. His body felt like someone had scooped out his insides and packed the empty space with acid and broken glass. Every breath burned. Every heartbeat felt wrong, hollow, like a drum with a hole punched through the center.
He pressed his hand to his chest.
The space where his Bloodline Core used to sit was empty. Not just empty. Gutted. Like someone had reached into his ribcage and ripped out the one thing that made him more than ordinary, and left nothing behind but a wound that didn't bleed on the outside.
Gone.
Then he heard it.
A voice. Not from the room. Not from the walls. From inside his skull, low and gravelly, dripping with sarcasm like a man who had been sleeping for a thousand years and woke up annoyed.
"Well, well, well. Took you long enough to get robbed."
Ethan's eyes went wide. He shot upright despite the pain screaming through his back and chest and looked around the dark basement. Nothing. No one. Just stone walls and moonlight.
"Down here, kid. Or up here. Or everywhere, really. I'm inside you. Try not to make that weird."
"Who... what are you?" Ethan's voice cracked, barely above a whisper, his eyes darting around the room like a trapped animal searching for the exit.
"I'm the thing your idiot father accidentally set free when he stole your bloodline. Name's not important. What's important is that the bloodline they ripped out of you? That was the lock on my cage. Ordinary dragon blood. Strong, sure. Pretty, absolutely. But ordinary. Like putting a padlock on a nuclear warhead."
Ethan pressed both palms against his temples. His head was splitting open, and now there was a voice inside it with an attitude problem.
"I am the True Dragon Spirit. I've been sealed inside your bloodline since the day you were born. Sleeping under that garbage awakening like a king stuffed under a mattress. I've been listening to your pathetic little thoughts for eighteen years. 'Why don't they love me?' 'What did I do wrong?' Kid, you didn't do anything wrong. You were born in a house full of roaches who can't tell a diamond from a bottle cap."
Ethan's mouth opened but no words came. His mind was still stuck on the hollow in his chest, on the memory of waking up with his body screaming and his Core already gone, taken while he was unconscious.
"You're... you're inside me?"
"Inside your bones, technically. Your body is a True Dragon Body. The rarest physical vessel in existence. That bloodline they stole? A candle. You? You're the sun. But right now, you're a sun that's been kicked in the teeth and left in a basement, so we've got some work to do."
Before Ethan could process a single word of what this voice was telling him, the basement door swung open. Bright light poured down the stone steps like a flood, and Ethan squinted against it as four figures appeared in the doorway.
Richard came down first, his posture straight, his chin high, his expression carrying all the warmth of a marble statue. Patricia followed with her hand resting lightly on Derek's shoulder, guiding him forward like she was presenting a prince. Derek practically glowed. There was a new energy radiating from his body, a warmth in his skin, a brightness in his eyes that hadn't been there yesterday. The stolen bloodline sat inside him like a torch lit with someone else's fire.
Jessica stood at the top of the stairs. She didn't come down. She just watched.
"Good. You're awake." Richard looked down at Ethan the way a man looks at a dog that got hit by a car but somehow survived. No guilt. No softness. Just mild inconvenience. "It's done. The Core is in Derek now, where it belongs. It's just losing a Bloodline Core, Ethan. What's the big deal? It's not like you lost a leg. When your brother becomes successful, he can casually arrange a desk job for you somewhere. You can live the rest of your life in peace, nice and quiet, the way you've always been."
"Look at this clown." The Spirit's voice growled inside Ethan's skull, sharp with contempt. "He just handed his favorite son a bottle rocket and thinks he gave him the moon. Kid, that bloodline they put in your brother? Give it five years. It'll peak at mid tier and stall. They stole the wrapper, not the candy."
Patricia crouched down in front of Ethan. Her perfume filled the air between them, thick and sweet, the same perfume she wore when she kissed Derek goodnight. She had never once come to Ethan's room at night.
"Sweetheart, don't be dramatic." Her voice was soft, the kind of soft that coats poison in sugar. "You never had the temperament for greatness. You're too quiet, too stubborn, too closed off. Derek will carry the Morrison name forward. The pressure is off your shoulders now. Isn't that what you always wanted? To be free from all of this?"
"I want to bite her," the Spirit said flatly. "Is that an option? Can I bite her?"

Chapter 10: Cocky Dragon spirit
The room went silent. Catherine's smirk melted off her face like ice under a heat lamp. Her eyes narrowed into slits."You'd better learn to close that mouth, boy. You have no idea who you're talking to.""Maybe. But I'm already inside the house, and you're still standing in the doorway needing to be invited.""Oh, I like this kid," the Spirit murmured inside Ethan's head, practically purring. "I like him a lot. Say something else. Make her eye twitch."Victoria pressed her lips together so hard her chin trembled. She was trying not to laugh.Catherine smoothed her coat with both hands, composing herself the way a snake recoils before striking. When she spoke again, the fake sweetness was gone. Her voice was pure business, cold and sharp as a blade."Enjoy your little jokes while you can, boy. Harrison is holding a board meeting next week. Nathan is being nominated for interim president of the Clarke Group. Serena's fifty percent shares will be placed under eldest branch management si
Chapter 9: Mocked
Ethan came downstairs to find Victoria already standing at the kitchen counter, setting out plates of eggs, toast, bacon, and fresh orange juice like she had been waiting for him. She looked up when she heard his footsteps and smiled, warm and real, the kind of smile that reached her eyes and stayed there."Did you sleep in Serena's room?"Ethan nodded, keeping his face perfectly neutral. "I fell asleep in the chair. Sorry if that's not appropriate. I didn't mean to overstep.""Don't apologize." Victoria set a full plate in front of him and squeezed his shoulder gently. "That's exactly where a husband should be.""Smooth," the Spirit commented inside his skull. "I'm almost proud of you. Almost. You still look like a kicked puppy, but at least you're a kicked puppy with good instincts."Ethan ate. He ate more than he had eaten in days, and Victoria watched him with the quiet satisfaction of a woman who believed that feeding someone was the first step in fixing them. After breakfast, Et
Chapter 8: Virgin
"What do you think happened? The Dragon Phoenix union completed. Your energies merged. Full cycle. The Resentful Dragon Force is about sixty percent purged from your system. Her Other Shore Flower venom is completely gone. Every last drop. You're stronger than you've ever been in your life, she's going to wake up within hours, and I would strongly suggest you put your shirt on before someone walks in and starts asking questions you don't want to answer."Ethan looked to his left.Serena lay beside him. Her red hair was spread across the pillow like a river of autumn leaves. Her cheeks had color now, a soft flush of pink that had not been there yesterday. Her breathing was deep and even and strong, her chest rising and falling with the steady rhythm of someone truly resting, not trapped, not drowning, just sleeping. There was a faint silver shimmer under her skin that faded as he watched, like moonlight retreating before sunrise. She was still unconscious. But not comatose. The differ
Chapter 7: Slept together
The golden glow on Ethan's arm brightened. It crawled up past his elbow, past his shoulder, across his chest like liquid sunlight being poured over his body. The silver glow on Serena's body intensified in answer, spreading from her hand up her arm, across her collarbone, flowing down her body like moonlight spilling over a landscape. The two lights reached for each other like living things, pulling, stretching, desperate to merge.Ethan's vision blurred. The room tilted sideways and then straightened and then tilted again. The beeping of the monitors warped into something deep and rhythmic, like a heartbeat rising from the center of the earth. The walls of the room seemed to breathe. The air thickened until it felt like water."I'm losing it." His voice was barely a whisper now. His eyes couldn't focus. The only thing he could see clearly was Serena's face on the pillow, her red hair, her parted lips, the silver glow spreading across her skin like dawn breaking across a frozen lak
Chapter 6: Married
Ethan's hand had been wrapped around Serena's wrist for over an hour. Golden light pulsed from his palm in slow, steady waves, sinking through her skin and into the darkness that lived beneath it. The Spirit guided him from inside, pointing out where the poison pooled thickest, showing him how to coax the black threads toward the surface where the Dragon Force could burn them away."There. You feel that cluster near her left lung? Push the energy toward it. Slow. Don't force it or you'll scatter the venom deeper."Ethan adjusted the flow. He could feel the poison now, oily and cold, tangled through Serena's veins like black roots strangling a garden from underneath. Wherever the golden light touched it, the black threads rose to the surface and dissolved against his palm with a faint hiss, like water hitting a hot pan."Good. That's three clusters down. There are about forty more. This is going to take a while.""It's working though?" Ethan's voice was tight with concentration, his br
CHAPTER 5: CURSED BRIDE PART 2
Ethan stood slowly. His body protested every movement, the whip marks pulling against his skin, but he stepped closer. Two feet away. One foot. The True Dragon Spirit exploded inside his skull like a siren going off in an empty cathedral."HOLY MOTHER OF EVERY DRAGON THAT EVER LIVED." The Spirit's voice cracked with something Ethan had never heard in it before. Shock. Raw, unfiltered shock. "Kid. KID. Stop. Don't move. Do you feel that? Do you feel what's coming off her body right now?"Ethan felt it. Something warm, not like heat from a fire, more like standing in sunlight that somehow reached his bones. It radiated from Serena's sleeping body and pressed against his skin and sank through his muscles and settled into the deepest parts of him. The hollow in his chest, the gutted space where his Bloodline Core had been ripped out, began to burn. Not with pain. With something else. Something that felt like the first breath of air after being held underwater."She's a True Phoenix Bod
