Alice's footsteps echoed through the hospital corridor as she walked away from Gregory's room. Each step felt heavier than the last, as if her body was gradually turning to stone. Her heart was breaking, fracturing into smaller and smaller pieces with every meter of distance she put between herself and her husband.

She knew the truth. She had always known the truth.

Robert Carnegie had ordered the hit on Gregory. It wasn't some random drunk driver. There was no accident, no unfortunate collision on the way to work. It was premeditated, calculated, and deliberate. Robert had decided that Gregory deserved to be destroyed, and he had followed through on that decision without hesitation.

And she had said nothing.

Alice pushed open the hospital's main entrance and stepped out into the bright afternoon sunlight. Her eyes squinted against the glare, but she kept walking toward the parking lot. Her mind was a battlefield of conflicting emotions. Guilt crashed against her like waves, threatening to pull her under. But underneath the guilt was something else. Something colder and more practical.

The Carnegie family was powerful. Untouchable. They had resources that could make problems disappear, that could twist the law into whatever shape they desired. Going against them would be suicide, both financially and possibly literally. And besides, Gregory's condition was what it was. The doctors had been clear. Even with the surgery, the chances of full recovery were minimal. He would likely spend the rest of his life paralyzed, dependent on her care.

At least with Robert's cooperation, she could secure the funding to make sure he received the best possible treatment. At least the company would survive. At least her family would be provided for.

That was what she told herself as she drove toward the couples' restaurant Robert had suggested.

The restaurant was upscale and intimate, with soft lighting and the kind of ambiance that whispered romance and seduction. Alice felt distinctly uncomfortable as she entered, her business portfolio clutched against her chest like a shield. She spotted Robert immediately. He was already seated at a table near the window, a glass of wine in front of him, a smile playing at his lips as he watched her approach.

He stood up as she reached the table, his movements fluid and practiced. A true gentleman's gesture, except there was nothing gentlemanly about the way his eyes swept over her body, taking inventory.

"Alice, I'm so glad you came," he said warmly, pulling out her chair for her. His voice was smooth as honey, laced with charm that made her skin crawl. "You look beautiful as always."

Alice sat down stiffly, not bothering to return his compliment. She opened her portfolio with deliberate efficiency and pulled out the contract, spreading it across the table between them. Her hands were steady, even though her insides were churning.

"The terms are exactly as we discussed," she said flatly, her voice carefully controlled. She was trying to keep this professional, trying to separate herself from what she was actually doing. "The doubled order amount, the delivery timeline, everything."

Robert picked up the contract and glanced at it, but his attention quickly shifted back to her. His expression was playful, amused, like he was enjoying some private joke at her expense.

"Shouldn't you be staying by your husband's side right now? A devoted wife's place is with her injured husband, isn't it?" he asked, tilting his head slightly. His tone was light and teasing, but underneath it was something darker. Something cruel. He was reminding her of what he had done, reminding her that Gregory was paralyzed because of him, and she was here instead of there.

Alice's jaw tightened, but she forced herself to remain calm. Her fingers gripped the edge of the table, her nails biting into the wood.

"Only by signing this contract will I have the financial means to provide him with the best possible treatment," she said quietly, her voice never wavering. She was lying to herself as much as to him, but the lie was easier than the truth. "He needs me to be strong right now. He needs me to take care of our family."

Robert laughed, a sound like tinkling bells that somehow managed to sound sinister. He set the contract down and reached across the table, placing his hand over hers. His touch was warm, but it felt like ice against her skin. His eyes were filled with amusement and something that looked disturbingly like admiration.

"If Alice is willing to be so practical about things, I could arrange all of Gregory's treatment myself," he said smoothly, his thumb stroking the back of her hand in a way that was meant to be seductive. His voice dropped lower, more intimate. "I have access to the best doctors in the world. Private specialists who could give him care that money in your bank account could never buy. All you would need to do is ask."

Alice didn't pull her hand away. She simply looked at him with an expression of cold calculation and spoke with a calm that surprised even herself.

"Sign the contract," she said flatly.

Robert's smile widened, but there was something uncertain in his expression now. He was still playing with her, still confident in his position of power, but something had shifted. He leaned back in his chair, withdrawing his hand from hers.

"And what if I don't sign?" he asked casually, picking up his wine glass and taking a sip. His eyes watched her over the rim of the glass, waiting to see how she would react.

Alice's expression didn't change. Her voice, when she spoke, was steady and quiet and absolutely terrifying in its certainty.

"Then I will thoroughly investigate the truth behind my husband's car accident. I will find every shred of evidence that connects you and your family to what happened. And then I will make sure that every enemy of the Carnegie family knows exactly who was responsible. The Carnegie family is powerful, Robert , but surely you have plenty of enemies who would be very interested in this information," she said, each word a weapon, each sentence a threat. Her eyes met him directly, and there was no fear in them. Only cold calculation and resolve.

The amusement drained from Robert's face. His jaw clenched, and for a moment, something dangerous flashed across his features. He set down his wine glass carefully, his hand steady even though his expression had hardened.

He had underestimated her. That much was obvious from the way his entire body tensed, from the way his eyes narrowed and reassessed her.

Alice waited, not blinking, not backing down. She had given him an ultimatum, and now they were both waiting to see what he would do with it.

After a long moment, Robert let out a laugh. It was different from before, more genuine but also colder. He picked up the contract and studied it carefully, his expression unreadable.

"You're quite a tough nut to crack, aren't you?" he said, his voice filled with a grudging sort of respect. He uncapped his pen with deliberate slowness and scrawled his signature across the contract line. His handwriting was sharp and aggressive, like the signature of someone used to making decisions that affected other people's lives. "It seems I have underestimated Alice after all."

He slid the contract back across the table toward her, his eyes never leaving hers. There was something in those eyes that terrified her more than any explicit threat could have. It was the look of a predator who had just realized his prey had teeth.

"Don't think this changes anything between us," he said quietly, his voice dropping to barely a whisper. "Consider this a temporary arrangement. Gregory's condition is unfortunate, but it is what it is. And you... you're much more interesting than I initially gave you credit for."

Alice gathered the signed contract with shaking hands, trying to hide the tremor that had suddenly overtaken her body. She had won this round, but she knew that Robert Carnegie was not the type of man to forget a threat. She had made an enemy today, or perhaps she had simply revealed the enemy that had been lurking beneath the surface all along.

She stood up from the table, still maintaining her composure even as her heart hammered against her ribs.

"Thank you for your cooperation," she said, her voice cool and professional. "The delivery will proceed as scheduled."

She turned and walked away from the table, feeling Robert's eyes on her back with every step. By the time she reached her car, her hands were shaking so badly she could barely grip the steering wheel. She sat in the driver's seat and let herself finally break, letting the tears that she had held back pour down her face.

She had made a deal with the devil. And she had a terrible feeling that the price she would have to pay had only just begun to accrue.

Her eyes were red-rimmed, her movements stiff and awkward, and her expression was twisted into something that looked like guilt wrapped in forced concern. She approached the bed slowly, as if walking through water. When she spoke, her voice was careful and measured, each word chosen with deliberate precision."I've consulted with all the doctors here. They've reviewed your scans, and your spine is severely damaged," she began, her hands fidgeting with the strap of her purse. Her gaze stayed fixed on his face, searching for his reaction. "There is one surgery that might help you recover fully. But the risk is enormous. The mortality rate exceeds eighty percent."She paused, letting the weight of that number settle between them. Alice had left early for work, kissing him on the forehead and whispering promises that everything would be fine. He'd nodded, accepting her words like a man accepting a lifeline, hoping that maybe they were true. His phone was connected to the car's Bluetooth system, and soft music played as he navigated through the city traffic. He didn't notice the black sedan at first. It was only when he merged onto the highway that something registered in his peripheral vision. The same car. Always three vehicles behind him, matching his speed exactly.Gregory's stomach tightened. He accelerated slightly, testing. The black sedan accelerated with him. He slowed down. It slowed down too.His hands gripped the steering wheel tighter, and his eyes flicked to the rearview mirror repeatedly. The windows of the sedan were tinted dark, impossible to see inside. Gregory stared at Alice, his mind spiraling. The blood type report sat on the table like an accusation, but as he looked at his wife's face, doubt crept in like fog. Was it possible that all of this was some kind of medical error? His hands felt weak.Alice's expression softened as she watched the certainty drain from his face. She slowly moved toward him, her movements gentle and deliberate. When she reached him, she wrapped her arms around his waist from behind and pressed her forehead against his back. Her touch was warm, tender, apologetic in a way words couldn't be."I'm sorry," she whispered against his shoulder blade, her voice small and vulnerable. "You're right. I made a mistake with Robert . I should have been more careful about how things looked. But I promise you, there was nothing romantic about it. Nothing."Her arms tightened around him slightly, and Gregory felt his anger beginning to dissolve like sugar in water. Maybe he had be

  • CHAPTER 3: THE BREAKING POINT

The front door slammed shut behind them, and the sound echoed through the empty house like a gunshot. Alice spun around to face Gregory, her face flushed with anger, her hands clenched into fists at her sides."What the hell were you trying to do back there?" Her voice was sharp, cutting through the silence like glass. She took a step toward him, her eyes blazing. "Following me to a restaurant? Making a scene? Hitting Robert in front of all those people?"Gregory stood motionless in the entryway, his coat still on, his shoulders rigid. He stared at her with eyes so cold they looked like they belonged to a stranger. When he finally spoke, his voice was measured, controlled, which somehow made it more terrifying than if he'd yelled."You betrayed me, Alice."His words fell like stones into still water. Alice's expression faltered for just a moment before anger crashed back over her features. She crossed her arms over her chest, defensive."I did no such thing," she snapped back, her ch
