The lobby had never been this silent. No, this one felt carved out of fear itself.
Dominic Santiago strode out of the elevator, the storm written on his face strong enough to make grown men seriously reconsider their life choices. His eyes swept the room, landing on the sight of the four guards that surrounded Derrick Morgan. His expression shattered. Vera stepped forward in a flurry of indignation. "Sir! Thank goodness you're here. This boy–this arrogant brat–barged in and claimed he knew you. I was just making sure security–" The sound of Dominic's slap across Vera's face echoed through the marble lobby. Vera staggered back, clutching her cheek in utter disbelief. Everyone gasped. Someone even dropped his tablet in shock. Dominic Santiago had just slapped his secretary, and he didn't spare her a glance after that. Instead, he turned to Derrick and bowed–a deep, respectful, humble bow. "Sir...I sincerely apologize for their arrogance. I must have failed to manage my staff properly." A murmur rippled through the lobby. They couldn't believe their eyes. "B-bow?" Someone whispered. "He bowed? To him?" Derrick waved a hand casually, more like the entire city's richest wasn't folded in half before him. "It's alright. Just...try to clean up your mess." With that, he turned away, walking toward the elevators as if the entire world as it is, parted for him. Dominic straightened, his face darkening like a dangerous thundercloud as he slowly pivoted. Then he shot a glance at as much faces as he could. "Every single person who disrespected Mr. Morgan today–fired! Not later, right now! And blacklist them from the entire industry and its associates." "M-Mr. Santiago–" Vera pleaded, collapsing on her knees with a blanching face, "Please! It was a misunderstanding! You–you can't–" "You have one minute to clear up your office, " he said without turning. "If you delay, the legal department will contact you." Her mouth instantly snapped shut, and tears gathered her eyes. No one dared to move to help her. Dominic turned to the rest of the employees. "For all of you. If anything like this ever happens again–if any of you as much as look at him wrong–you can as well pack up and leave. Understood?!" A collective, terror-struck, "Yes, sir," echoed around the lobby. Without another word, he spun around and rushed after Derrick. ----------------- Upstairs. The very moment they stepped into the private executive lounge, Dominic vibrated with excitement. "Sir, you're finally back," he said, trying to keep his voice steady and professional. "I must put together a grand welcome banquet! The city needs to know–" "That won't be necessary." Derrick lowered into a leather chair and gently rubbed his forehead. "The city needs to mind its business." Dominic nodded slowly. "Of course. Low profile." "Perfect." Derrick leaned back, his eyes narrowing. "Now... let's talk about the letters. Tell me, what did you dig up?" Dominic instantly stiffened. "Ah. Well. Sir... I must say, I owe you a formal apology." "Just spill it." "The documents are extremely old. Most of the ink had faded already. Only one of the letters was successfully deciphered and interpreted." "Okay, then get to it already." Dominic hesitated a bit, one that made Derrick furrow his brows. "What's the matter?" "Well...sir...it happens to be–" he paused, then cleared his throat. "A marriage contract." Derrick stared at him, then replied in a low voice. "Nope. I didn't hear that. You must be kidding–" "I wish it were sir" Dominic interrupted, his brows furrowing. "But it's already too late." Derrick instantly sat upright. "What do you mean, too late?" "Mr. Rowan is fully aware of it." Derrick shot to his feet. "Aware? Of what?–" "He may have personally contacted the head of the other family. And he may have...secured the engagement himself. All for you, his much beloved disciple." For a moment, Derrick said nothing. His jaw clenched, his breath shallow, and his eyes fixed sternly on Dominic. "My exposure was supposed to be confidential. He knows I'm meant to stay off the radar. Why would he risk this?" Dominic took a moment before answering. "He said it was necessary. And...the other family accepted immediately." Derrick turned away, walking towards the large window and pushing the blinds open with two fingers. "I need to speak with my master. Arrange a call." "Sir...really, there's no need to worry," Dominic said carefully. "The engagement was arranged using your current identity." Derrick froze and turned slowly. "What?" "Of course, sir. The moment they heard you were Mr. Rowan's prized disciple, they made no objections. Not a single question was asked." Derrick hesitated. "Which family is it?" Dominic brightened. "The illustrious Lorenzo family. A very noble household, sir. Prestigious, respected–sir?" Derrick had gone completely still, the shock draining every expression from his face. "Are you alright sir?" Dominic asked, a hint of panic creeping in as he watched Derrick run a hand through his hair as he walked back to the leather chair. "Sir, is there anything I can do–" "Not the Lorenzo family," Derrick muttered, shutting his eyes before sinking into the chair. The Lorenzo family–Ivy's family. He'd looked into her background before she woke up that morning, and he'd learnt quickly that whenever people in the city mentioned Lorenzo, they referred to her family. His vision slowly dimmed with a rush of anger. Of all families–how could he marry into that one? Dominic kept going, oblivious of the conflict. "They're quite noble, sir. And their daughters are properly raised–" "You have no idea," Derrick chipped in quietly, "you really don't."Latest Chapter
Chapter 149: Wrong Timing?
The doctor, who had stepped aside slightly during the exchange, glanced down at his wristwatch before clearing his throat. This drew attention back to him."I definitely would've stayed for that," he said with a polite smile, "but I'm quite afraid I have another appointment waiting at the moment."He turned back to Ivy, his tone shifting into something a bit more professional. "You'll need to come in for a proper checkup in the coming Tuesday. We'll run all the necessary tests then."Ivy nodded. "Okay Doctor.""As for now," he continued, "have more rest. No unnecessary stress this morning, alright?"Derrick inclined his head in agreement. "Of course. I'll make sure of that."The doctor gave an approving nod before patting Derrick lightly on the shoulder. Then he made his way out.The door had barely closed behind him before the energy in the room picked up again."So," Jane began, tilting her head thoughtfully as she looked at Ivy, "what are are hoping for?""A girl of course," Sandra
Chapter 148: Beneath Smiles and Unspoken Truths
Derrick remained beneath the large apple tree just a moment longer, the weight of what he just heard settling into him in a way he could neither ignore nor fully process. It surely had added a sharp twist to the situation. He reached up again, picking two more apples from the low–hanging branch. The motion grounded him and gave his hands something to do while his mind continued to turn over the same questions.Who was Pa Lorenzo speaking to? And who would not know what was coming for him?Derrick exhaled slowly as he released the branch. Then he turned back toward the house, his steps careful as he crossed the vast garden. The morning still held its gentle calm, the breeze moving in its usual softness through the leaves. By the time he stepped back inside, his expression had settled into its usual composure. He made his way upstairs, noting how the door of his room was slightly ajar. He pushed the door open and stepped in.Elissa and the others were there, gathered around Ivy. Jane s

Ma Lorenzo stood by the counter in the kitchen, her posture composed. Ivy's mother sat across from her. Their voices were low and their conversation sounded really private.Derrick paused, catching the tail end of names before they caught his presence.Moses and Pa Lorenzo. That was all he could hear. But he cleared his throat as if he heard nothing. "Uhhm, Ivy isn't feeling really well," he said in an even tone. "Could you prepare something light for her to eat before the doctor arrives?""The doctor?" Ivy's mother said in genuine surprise. "How...is it that serious?""Well, yes," Derrick replied. "But not really though. She threw up twice before we called for the doctor."The women nodded slowly. "Alright. We'd see her as soon we we're done."Derrick gave a brief nod and turned away. As he walked, his mind went back to what the women were discussing earlier. Why had they stopped immediately when he had walked in?He exhaled softly as he finally brushed the thought aside. A mome
Chapter 146: Beneath The Quiet Mornings
Vivian didn’t move or say a word after Moses made the statement. She just stood and watched as Moses turned and walked away. Daniella followed him without a word.Behind them, the door opened again, and Vivian stepped out. She stopped just short of the hallway's end.She watched as they reached the street and stopped right in front of the SUV waiting at the curb.As they got in, the doors closed and the engine started. The car soon pulled away, and only then did Vivian break. The tears came unrestrained, her body folding slightly under the weight of it as the reality settled in.Moses had dumped her.-------Inside the car, the silence held only for a moment."I love you baby," Daniella said, leaning in. "Love you too," Moses replied.Their lips met and forged a long kiss. Moses' hand came up instinctively, pulling her closer as the car continued down the street."Where to, sir?" the driver's voice cut in. Moses pulled back just enough to answer, his breath slightly uneven."The mos

Daniella reached Moses."Can you stand?" she asked him in a low voice. "I'm sure you can't."Moses exhaled through the dull ache in his ribs and pushed himself up with her help. His weight leaned greatly into her for a brief moment before he steadied."I guess I'll survive," he muttered as he winced in pain.Daniella looked around at the staring eyes. "Yeah, barely."Without wasting time on anything else, she placed one of his arm over her shoulder and guided him through the thinning crowd. "Screw you!!" One of the men on the ground due to the fight with Daniella yelled. But she ignored everything as she led Moses out of the bar. At the curb, she raised a hand and a taxi slowed, pulling back without hesitation. She opened the back door first and helped him inside before sliding in beside him."Upside street," Moses told the driver, and the car pulled away.He leaned down carefully and rested his head against the seat.Daniella glanced at him just once. "You're really lucky."He let
Chapter 144: A Night That Refused to Stay Quiet
The bar was alive long before Moses decided to leave it.Not just busy—Alive.Laughter spilled over itself in waves, glasses clinked without rhythm, and voices rose and fell like a restless tide that refused to settle. The air was thick with heat, alcohol, and the kind of careless energy that only came when people had decided—consciously or not—not to think too deeply about anything. And at the center of it—Moses. He stood near the counter, one hand resting lazily against the polished wood, the other lifting his glass just slightly—not to drink, but to acknowledge. To accept.Because they were watching him.All of them. Not just glancing—watching. The bartender had leaned in moments ago, eyebrows raised in quiet confirmation.Moses had only nodded once. That was all it took. And now—The room knew.“Drinks on him!”The announcement had cut clean through the noise, sharp and immediate. For half a second—silence. Then—An eruption.Cheers broke out from every corner of the bar.
