Outside the Lorenzo villa, elegant lanterns lined the pristine driveway, and it was calm and luxurious–the direct opposite of the chaos going on in Derrick's mind.

"Sir, at least let me come with you," Dominic said beside him. "You're meeting a distinguished family, and it's proper etiquette if I'm there too."

"No," Derrick brushed him off immediately. "That won't be necessary."

This was the umpteenth time Derrick was turning down the request, but Dominic tried once more, this time dramatically placing a hand on his chest.

"But the Lorenzo women, sir. Half the men in the city dream about them every night!"

"Well, I'm not here to dream," Derrick replied, turning to Dominic with an evil smile. "I'm here to break off an engagement."

Dominic inhaled sharply as if Derrick had just blasphemed against the pure heavens. "But sir, you should settle down early before building your career. At least, have some girl to manage your daily–"

"No."

"Sir–"

"Dominic please," Derrick interrupted, rubbing his temple.

"Alright," Dominic exhaled. "Good luck then, sir."

With that, he turned and walked away.

I need more than luck on this one, Derrick thought. I need a miracle.

He silently prayed his fiancée wouldn't turn out to be Ivy's sister. Sleeping with a potential sister-in-law was something that even he, a man with a much complicated past, could not explain away.

The universe wouldn't be that cruel, would it? It couldn't–

"What the hell are you doing here?"

The familiar voice hit him like a brick. Derrick froze.

Slowly, more like someone turning to face a monster, he looked over his shoulder.

There she stood. Ivy Lorenzo.

Her arms were crossed, and her expression was dark, sharp and suspicious. She looked like one that was just seconds away from stabbing him with her heels.

"I-Ivy," Derrick forced out a smile that made him look stupid. "Fancy seeing you–"

"Shut up." Ivy glared. "Why did you follow me here?"

"What? No, I couldn't have–"

"Save it, please," Ivy scoffed. "You think I don't know exactly how scumbags like you work? You sleep with someone and then stalk them–show up at their house and demand money. Don't waste my time. Just leave before you embarrass yourself."

For a moment, Derrick considered explaining. But which part could he even say?

I might be engaged to your sister. Or you. No, someone else in your family.

Right. That would sound perfectly rational.

"Ivy, listen to me. It's not exactly what you–"

"I don't give a damn. Leave now!"

They stood locked in a tense standoff, Ivy's glare still sharp. She drew in a breath, her lips parting in clear readiness to unleash another round of insults on him. But just at that moment, the iron gates suddenly groaned and swung open.

"Ivy! What on earth are you doing arguing at the entrance?" A stern voice scolded immediately.

An elderly man approached. White hair neatly brushed, posture quite strong, and expression full of authority. He walked forward carrying the weight of command in every step of his. Derrick stared at the man, trying really hard to recall if he had seen his face somewhere in the past. He was all blank.

"We have an important guest arriving! Have you no sense of–" The old man started to say, but stopped mid-sentence as his eyes landed on Derrick. The transformation that followed was instant, as his face lit up with recognition.

Then, he bowed deeply.

"Mr. Morgan," he greeted with utmost respect. "Welcome, welcome. We've been waiting for you."

Ivy's jaw dropped, and Derrick stiffened. She rushed forward, grabbing the old man's arm.

"Grandpa?! Why are you bowing to this...nobody? He's of little worth, and I mean it! He's just a–"

"Silence!" her grandfather barked, and she instantly sensed the anger and seriousness in his tone. "Don't be rude! This young man is our honoured guest today. "

"Huh? What honored guest?" Ivy demanded, stealing a very quick glance at Derrick.

Her grandfather ignored her, gesturing respectfully to Derrick.

"Please, do well to come into my humble abode. Your visit today is very important to the Lorenzo family."

Derrick candidly wished that a hole would just appear beneath and swallow him whole. Ivy, on the other hand, looked like she'd been struck with an unforgiving lightning.

"Grandpa," she whispered, still utterly confused. "Why are you greeting him that way?"

Her grandfather simply sighed, patting her shoulder with a mix of affection and pride.

"Because," he said, his wrinkled face beaming, "he is my future grandson-in-law."

Ivy stared at her grandfather for a while. Then she exploded. "What?!"

The old man paused, his expression tightening in measured assessment, the way a man with decades of experience processes something that doesn't quite add up. Then, he realized he hadn't introduced them to each other yet.

"Oh–pardon my age and pace please." He chuckled, pulling Ivy to Derrick's side. "My sincerest apologies, Mr. Morgan. This is my granddaughter, Ivy Lorenzo. A smart and independent girl. Oh, she could be a little stubborn at times, but she's gifted with an excellent heart. You two will make a fine match."

Derrick felt relieved a little–at least it wasn't any of Ivy's sisters that was the subject of discussion. But then, the lady standing beside him still wasn't a better option.

Ivy stared at her grandfather like he had just lost his mind.

Yes, that's it, she thought. So, she let out a smile, staring at her grandfather and hoping that he too would laugh or something.

But he didn't, and that was when pure terror struck her.

With fire blazing in her eyes, she took fast steps away from Derrick and declared, "I will never marry this man! I don't want to have anything to do with him! Ever!"

"Ivy–"

"Grandpa please," she interrupted, pointing an accusing finger at Derrick. "This man isn't worthy of my love, and I won't give it to him. Not now, not ever!"

Derrick closed his eyes, trying really hard not to rain curses on his master for putting him in such a ridiculous situation.

"No," Christopher replied. "You're wrong again. I asked that the bomb explosion be delayed because I didn't want the explosion anymore." Vincent was now more confused than ever. Christopher chuckled. "Don't tell me you thought I let them go because of Dominic's fancy threat. Ah, that's too naive to think." He paused, then added in a lowered tone. "Mrs. Lorenzo happens to be the backbone of the Lorenzo Group. Her capture and death would lead to its crumble. Now, that was what I wanted." Vincent watched his father's posture–straight and unyielding. "But...you never told me that, father. You only asked me to kidnap Ma Lorenzo so I could get the money Moses owed me." "Well, now you know," Christopher replied evenly. "Reports and statistics indicate that the Lorenzo Group would reach our heights in just a few years time. And that is what I intend to stop by any means possible."There was not a trace of arrogance in his tone.Vincent crossed his arms."And how do you think the Group wo

"I came across his father once," Rowan continued. "Christopher Maguire. But that was a long time ago." Derrick's fingers tightened slightly against his knee. "Okay. Well, there's something else." Rowan waited. "During the operation," Derrick continued carefully, "Vincent called me Derrick Maguire. It naturally struck me as strange and absurd. But he didn't look like he made a mistake. He had that...smile." Rowan pulled off his hat and brushed a hand over his bald head before placing it back on. "It was definitely a mix-up," he replied calmly. Then he smiled. "Perhaps a ploy to distract you." Then he waved his hand dismissively. "Maguire and Morgan sound alike, you know. It's close enough for some subtle manipulation." Derrick watched his master closely. Rowan's expression remained composed and neutral. Just then, Rowan glanced at his wristwatch. "Oops, my girls will be coming soon. I'm done here." He leaned back again, putting on the sunglasses as he regained his earlier ea

Derrick's faint smile lingered only a second after he spoke. Across the screen, the sunlight behind Rowan glinted off the ocean like scattered diamonds across the rolling side. A gentle breeze lifted the brim of his hat slightly before it settled again. "Not looking bad too, Derrick," he replied as he leaned back in his beach chair. Then he slowly rubbed his palms together as though warming them. "So, how are you enjoying your stay in New York, my boy?" he asked in a relaxed voice. Derrick leaned back in the leather seat, one ankle resting over the opposite knee. "Why did you arrange a marriage for me just within a week of my arrival in the city?" Dominic blinked once. Rowan threw his head back and laughed. Then he shook his head slightly. "You never change," he said, still smiling. "Always straight to the heart of the damn matter." He coughed slightly, adjusting the position of his summer hat. "Well, I simply thought that you would appreciate having a cool lady around you."

Derrick's steps slowed and he turned to the voice. A familiar face hurried toward him from across the marble floor. The man was in his late fifties, his suit jacket unbuttoned and flapping faintly as he approached. His smile was wild. "Mr. Derrick!" he repeated, finally reaching him and extending both hands at once. Derrick accepted the handshake. "Good afternoon, sir." The man pumped his hand enthusiastically. "You probably remember me. I'm on the Lorenzo Group board, and was present during the board meeting you attended." Derrick slightly inclined his head. "Of course, sir." "We're all genuinely anticipating your comments at the next board meeting," the man rushed on. His words seemed to stumble over themselves. "Truly. Your economic projections last time were quite remarkable. I must say, without exaggeration, that you are an intelligent economist." Derrick gave a faint, polite smile. "And I must say you're too kind with words, sir." But the man wasn't waiting for humility

Ivy's father adjusted the cuff of his tailored suit. His wife sat upright beside him, her handbag resting neatly on her lap. Ivy stood near the center of the sitting room, her eyes softening momentarily when they met Derrick's"Great timing, Derrick," she said, smoothing an imaginary crease from her fitted blazer. "We're all heading to the Lorenzo Group now." Her father nodded subtly. "There are documents I need to sign and reports I need to review," she continued. "I'm sure it won't take long, as we were there just yesterday for the board meeting. Then we'll all proceed to see Pa Lorenzo. He's expected back today." "Luckily, he won't return to meet his dear wife missing," Moses' mother chipped in just then, winking at Derrick. "The doctors have cleared him," Ivy's father said. "He'd be coming back when we want. And that should be after Ma Lorenzo returns." "True," Ivy said, nodding. "We'd get to see her in the hospital where she was admitted after we leave Pa Lorenzo. If she's

Derrick's eyes flicked toward the bathroom door. Steam was already beginning to curl faintly from behind it. "That's perfect," he said into the phone. "I'll find a way to break away from them." "Alright sir," Dominic said. "And I'll do well to secure an untapped connection that you would use in communicating with Mr. Rowan." At the mention of the name, Derrick's grip tightened slightly around the phone. "Yeah," he said in a lowered voice. "We've got a real lot to talk about." Just then, Vincent Maguire's voice echoed in his memory. He called him, 'Derrick Maguire.'Was that just a slip of tongue? It better be.Dominic exhaled softly on the other end. "You'll get all the time you need in speaking to him. And, believe me when I sat he had a lot to tell you too." A pause. "And Derrick... it's never been more important for you to hide your identity than it is now." Derrick frowned slightly. "And what's that supposed to mean?" "Well, because–" The bathroom door handle clicked. Th
