Near Death Experience

Blood pooled beneath me, warm yet quickly cooling against the unforgiving pavement. My breaths came shallow, ragged, each one feeling like it might be my last. Pain burned through my ribs, my stomach, my legs—hell, everywhere. I tried to move, but my body refused, heavy with the weight of my injuries.

The night sky above blurred as my vision darkened at the edges. How had it come to this?

I forced my mind to rewind, piecing together the events that led me here.

It was supposed to be a simple drive home. A quiet night. No trouble. But trouble had found me anyway. The black SUV had appeared out of nowhere, cutting me off and forcing my car to swerve into the abandoned side street. I barely had time to react before masked men emerged like shadows from the vehicle, their intentions clear.

I fought. God knows I fought. My knuckles ached from the punches I’d landed. My ribs screamed from the blows I took in return. But I was outnumbered, overpowered, and in the end, left for dead.

A sharp cough racked my body, and the metallic taste of blood coated my tongue. My fingers twitched against the ground, desperate for something—anything—to hold onto. But there was nothing. No one.

I was alone.

Was this really how it ended?

A bitter laugh bubbled in my throat, but it never escaped. The irony was almost laughable—Caden Kelly, the survivor, the fighter, the man who always found a way—brought down like this. No warning, no explanation. Just cold steel slicing through flesh, fists hammering down until my body gave out.

My eyelids grew heavier, the pain dulling into something almost peaceful. Maybe it was better to let go.

Then I heard it.

A voice. Deep, commanding, and impossible to ignore.

[Bonding System Activated.]

The words echoed in my skull, rattling against the walls of my consciousness.

What the hell?

I must be hallucinating. The blood loss was messing with my head. But the voice came again, stronger this time.

[Initiating Binding Protocol. Do you accept?]

I tried to speak, but my throat barely made a sound. My fingers curled weakly against the pavement.

[Do you accept?] the voice pressed, insistent now.

I didn’t know what the hell was happening. My body was shutting down. My mind was slipping. And yet, something deep inside me whispered—say yes.

With the last shred of strength I had left, I forced my lips to move.

"Y-yes."

The moment the word left me, a jolt of energy surged through my body, unlike anything I had ever felt before. It wasn’t just warmth—it was fire, lightning, power threading through every shattered part of me, knitting me back together with a force that defied logic.

I gasped, arching off the ground as my vision exploded in white-hot light. My wounds pulsed, the pain intensifying before suddenly vanishing, replaced by something... stronger.

And then, just as suddenly as it came, the sensation settled, leaving me breathless but—alive.

I blinked, my breath coming in hard pants as I pushed myself up on shaky arms.

I wasn’t dead.

I should be, but I wasn’t.

The blood was still there. The shredded remains of my shirt stuck to my skin. But the gaping wounds? Gone. The agony that had moments ago consumed me? Faded.

"What the hell just happened?" I whispered.

The voice responded, calm and unwavering.

[Bond successful. Welcome, Caden Kelly.]

I barely had time to process before a scuff of a boot against the pavement made my head snap up.

One of the masked men stood at a distance, frozen mid-step, staring at me like he’d seen a ghost. His grip on the knife in his hand tightened, but I could see it—the flicker of fear in his posture.

Good.

I didn’t know what had just happened to me, but I wasn’t about to waste it.

With a speed that startled even me, I was on my feet. My body felt... different. Lighter. Stronger. There was a surge beneath my skin, an awareness that hadn’t been there before.

The masked man took a step back.

I smiled. It wasn’t friendly.

"You should’ve made sure I was dead," I said.

Then I moved.

Faster than I had any right to. Faster than him. My fist connected with his jaw before he could react, the impact sending a sharp crack through the night. He hit the ground hard, groaning, dazed.

I grabbed his collar and yanked him close, my breath steady, my strength undeniable.

"Who sent you?" I demanded.

The man coughed, still stunned. "S-screw you."

Wrong answer.

I slammed him back against the pavement, my grip unyielding.

"You just left me to die," I said, my voice lower now, deadlier. "You don’t get to play tough."

His breathing turned ragged, panic creeping into his eyes.

"Who. Sent. You?" I repeated, slow and sharp, letting each word cut through the silence.

His lips parted, but before he could speak, another sound sliced through the air—an engine roaring to life.

I turned just in time to see the black SUV screeching away.

Damn it.

I let go of the man in disgust. He scrambled backward, clutching his jaw, his fear evident. He knew he wouldn’t win this fight. Not anymore.

"You tell whoever gave you this job," I said, watching as he scrambled to his feet, "that Caden Kelly doesn’t die that easily."

His eyes widened, then he turned and ran, disappearing into the shadows.

I exhaled, dragging a hand down my face. My pulse was still racing, my body thrumming with this... new energy. Whatever had happened, whatever the Bonding System was, it had changed me.

I wasn’t just alive. I was something else now.

And I intended to find out exactly what.

But first—I had unfinished business.

I turned, my gaze locking onto the distant city lights. Somewhere out there, someone had put a hit on me. They thought they’d won.

They were dead wrong.

A slow, dangerous smile spread across my face.

"Let’s see who’s really playing the game now."

The last words barely left my lips when a sharp, searing pain shot through my skull. My knees buckled as the voice returned, this time colder, more demanding.

[Primary Task Initiated: Hunt or Be Hunted.]

My vision blurred, the world tilting.

And then—darkness

Small Problems Grow BigAfter our hidden attack on Xylos-9, no big explosions or alarms were going off everywhere. Instead, it was a quiet, growing worry for the System. On our main screen, which showed the System's messages, we saw the first signs of their confusion."They're not finding us at all," Rylan whispered, his eyes wide as he watched the data. "They're blaming problems inside their own system. Their auto-check programs are going wild trying to find out what's wrong. Important messages are still going through, but more and more places are getting frustrated."I watched as reports, usually sent perfectly, started to be a little late. Then those small delays became much bigger. Supply lists from Xylos-9, meant for shipyards far away, suddenly arrived incomplete or with wrong amounts. Orders for special minerals were confirmed, but the actual shipments were stuck in fake waiting lines, or worse, sent to completely different, unimportant places."It's like they're trying to put

Ghost in the MachineThe Vault of Creation moved through the dark, cold space. It was like a silent hunter, hidden by the wild energy of the nebula. Outside the main window, gas and dust swirled like a colorful, angry ocean. Its wild energy kept any System ships from coming too close. We were like a tiny needle in a huge pile of hay, unseen and unheard."Getting close to Xylos-9," Rylan said, breaking the quiet. His fingers flew across his computer. A bright, floating picture of the planet appeared, showing all its mining tunnels and paths. "Putting us at the edge of the nebula's jamming field now, Caden. Their long-range sensors won't see us at all."I felt the Vault gently move, a deep, living shake going through its old body. My link to it grew stronger, a direct connection to the First Architects' amazing technology. This wasn't just about flying a ship; it was about becoming one with it, using its hidden power."Good," I answered, my eyes on the floating map. "Start looking for t

  • CHAPTER 48

The First SparkThe silence within the Vault of Creation was heavy, broken only by the soft whirring of Rylan's console and the almost imperceptible hum of the ancient technology around us. My mind, still swimming with the vast knowledge of the First Architects, felt both expanded and strangely calm. The plan was clear, etched into the very core of my being."Alright, Rylan," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet. "Our first target. A resource planet known as Xylos-9. It's a major mining hub for rare earth minerals, vital for their advanced ship components. The Architects' data shows a weakness in their automated transport network there."Rylan's fingers danced across his keyboard, pulling up holographic schematics of Xylos-9. The planet was depicted as a dull, rocky sphere, crisscrossed with glowing lines that represented mining tunnels and transport routes. "Xylos-9," he repeated, a flicker of excitement in his eyes. "Understood. The System's standard automated freight lines ar

Taking Apart Their NetThe Vault's soft hum felt like a steady, calm heartbeat as I dug deeper into the old records from the First Architects. Rylan, with his quick fingers, had managed to open some of the easier locked files. This let a lot of information flow in, but the real "understanding" still came only to me, through my special link – a stream of pure knowledge that didn't need screens or words. What filled my mind was a picture of the galaxy completely controlled. The System wasn't just a government; it was like a living thing, built into every part of settled space. Every trade, every message, every person's record – it all went into a huge, connected web, run from hidden centers. The First Architects' notes weren't just maps of the System's setup, but also a deep look at why it was built. They saw the start of its harsh rule long before the System took over completely."They built it like a body's control system," I thought aloud. The idea was clear. "Each planet, each base,

Shifting TidesThe Vault of Creation jumped through space, the cloud of gas and dust around it changing shape as it moved. I felt the huge power of the First Architects flowing through me. It was a direct link to the old tech that now did what I wanted. We weren't just getting away; we were becoming a moving fort, a ghost in the vastness of space.Rylan whistled again from the pilot’s seat. "That was... wild, Caden. My machines are going crazy. We just traveled a light-year in a flash!" He looked back at me, his eyes wide. "So, where are we now?"I looked at the main screen. It showed a completely different set of stars. The swirling, colorful cloud had changed, quietly hiding the Vault again. We were deep inside an unknown area, a quiet, dark part of the galaxy that the System rarely visited. It was perfect."A temporary safe place," I answered. "But we won't stay hidden for long. The System will be looking for us."The guardian's presence, an old, wise echo in my mind, agreed. "Thei

  • CHAPTER 45

The Architect's FuryThe Vault of Creation moved around me, like it was part of me. Through its clear walls, I watched the fight outside. The System fleet, which used to seem so strong, was now a mess. Their ships were breaking apart from the attacks of the guardian fleet. Each blast from the guardians' blue energy weapons felt like my own thought, exact and crushing."Admiral Valerius, our sensors are picking up an energy signal like nothing we've ever seen!" a nervous officer yelled from the main ship's control room. "It's coming from the center of the nebula, sir! And it's getting stronger!"I felt that power growing inside me. The strength of the First Architects was huge, very old, and now, I could control it. It wasn't just raw energy; it was knowledge, battle plans made over millions of years, a deep understanding of space itself. The guardian fleet moved with a mind far beyond simple robots. Every move was a planned strike, every shot was perfect. They weren't just protecting
