“NOOOOO!” Uri yelled as she saw blood drIp to the floor between Nik and the man that had tried to take her. She rushed out of Tedros’ arms, he had been distracted by the gunshot so his hold on Uri had loosened enough for her to escape easily.
She got to Nik just as the man and him fell to the floor. Uri quickly turned Nik over but it turned out that he wasn’t hurt, it was the man that had been shot while they had both been struggling for the gun. Nik only fell because of the impact of the gun’s recoil.
“Oh my God! Nik! Are you okay?” Uri asked in a panicky voice as she touched him all over.
“It’s okay, it’s okay, Uri. I’m okay. The blood isn’t mine.” Nik said as he pulled her closer and put his face in the crook of her neck.
“I’ve called the police, they should be here soon.” Connor said as the rest of them walked up to Nik and Uriel.
They helped Nik off the floor just as the club’s security came in to find out what happened. They had heard the gunshot.
“What’s going on here?” One of the security guys asked.
“That guy just shot me.” The man groaned from the floor as he held his bleeding side with one hand and pointed at Nik with the other.
“Don’t let him get away.”
The security guys immediately tackled Nik to the floor.
“Hey! Are you crazy? Let him go.” Anika said.
“He was trying to defend himself.” Tedros said but the security guys weren’t listening.
A police car arrived shortly after.
“This guy just tried to kill someone here.” One of the guys holding Nik said as he moved Nik towards the police officer.
“That’s a lie!” Connor said.
“There’s blood on him.” The officer said with an arched brow.
“He was trying to save me from the man he shot. We were dancing when the man dragged me away. Nik is my boyfriend, and he came after me. The man refused to let me go and Nik got aggressive, that was when the man brought out a gun and they began to struggle. The gun went off while they were struggling.” Uriel said to the officer.
“Give your statements at the station, and we’ll start a proper investigation. For now, your boyfriend is under arrest. Where is the victim?” The officer asked.
“He has been taken to a hospital by one of us that works here. The car left minutes before yours drove in.” The security guy said as the officer took Nik from him.
A handcuff was locked around Nik’s wrists and Uri began to sob.
“It’s okay, love. I’ll be fine.” Nik said to her and attempted to smile at her.
“This is all my fault.” Uriel sobbed as she hugged Nik.
He put his chin on her head and sighed.
“It’s really my fault, Uri. You wanted us to stay home together, I should have listened to you.” He said and she lifted her head to look at him.
“We need to leave now.” The officer said.
“We’ll be right behind you, Nik. We won’t leave you.” Connor said.
“Get Uri home, she’s already tired.” Nik said to Connor.
“No, I’m not leaving you.” Uri said.
The officer pulled Nik away from Uri and put him in the back seat of the car. They all followed behind the police car and Connor called his lawyer while Tedros drove the car. When they got to the station, they weren’t allowed to see Nik. He was taken to an interrogation room immediately. Connor’s lawyer arrived about thirty minutes later with a frown on his face, though he tried to hide his displeasure behind professionalism. Connor’s call had probably woken the man up from sleep but he was being paid too much to complain.
“Where is he?” The lawyer asked as he stepped into the hallway.
“They took him through that door and refused to let us see him.” Connor replied and pointed down the hall.
“It’s standard procedure. I’ll see what can be done so he’ll be released on bail.” The lawyer said and walked in the direction that Connor had pointed.
Several minutes later, the lawyer walked out with Nik beside him.
“Nik!” Uriel said as she ran to him. He picked her up and kissed her.
“Is he free to go?” Tedros asked.
“Home, yes. But he can’t leave the city for now while the investigation is going on. He’ll be called back to the station when something arises. I was told they’ve taken all your statements, so we can all go now.” The lawyer said.
“Thanks for coming on such short notice.” Anika said.
“It’s my job.”
They all left the station and only returned two days later when Nik was summoned. Connor’s lawyer talked with the officers and then met with all of them.
“What do you mean he pressed charges?” Tedros asked the lawyer.
“The victim pressed charges of assault and attempted murder.” The lawyer replied.
“That’s crazy. The gun is his and he was the one who started trouble.” Anika said.
“The trial will be when the victim gets out of the hospital in a few days. I’ll try my best, but I’ll be honest with you, it’s not looking good. This man has connections and he’s really pissed off. The gun was checked out and it’s not registered in the man’s name, it’s registered under your name, Nik.” The lawyer said.
“WHAT? How is that possible? I don’t own a gun.” Nik said with a bewildered look.
“It has your ID, your signature and other details. I don’t know how, but it all checks out. It all looks legal. I'll try my best to make a good case for you, but the rest is out of my hands.” The lawyer said.
“Don’t worry, Nik. We’ll win this, we have to.” Connor said.

“Nikaelon Roch, this court finds you guilty of attempted murder. Because of your good records and the evidence of your unintentionality in the gesture, you will get a reduced sentence. You are hereby sentenced to three years in prison.” The gavel sounded and the sentence was sealed.

EPILOGUE
EPILOGUE *** NIKAELEON * I thought I understood nervousness when I was about to get married, or fear when Aina had been held at gun point, none of that compared to the feeling of watching my child being born. Aina and I had already agreed before hand that I would be inside while she was giving birth. She needed my support because this was her first birth, and I wanted to watch , it would help me treasure her sacrifice to have our babies. Yes, babies. It seemed Sophia's prayer for a brother and sister came to pass. We found out we were having twins when we went for a late ultrasound scan. She screamed as another contraction hit her and her grip on my hand almost crushed my bones but I just stroked her hair with my other hand. "I don't think I can do this anymore." Aina sobbed and my heart broke for her. I wish I could take her pain away even if just a little bit and I hated being so helpless because at this point, there was nothing I could do for her. "Just a little bit more, Mr
THE END
NIKAELEON *** I never expected to be nervous today. It was usual to be nervous when you’re getting married, but I didn’t expect to be nervous, I expected to go through it calmly like I usually did everything in my life. Instead, I was fidgety, checking my reflection in the mirror a hundred times even though I looked perfect physically. “You look great, son. Stay still before you make a hole in the floor with your pacing.” My father chuckled as he walked into my room. “I don’t know why I’m even nervous. I was fine yesterday.” I said to him as I adjusted my tie again. “I was the same way when I married your mother. A lot of people no longer value marriage, but it’s supposed to be sacred. A lifelong vow of commitment to the one person you choose to live the rest of your life with. And you love her, you’re afraid of making a mistake and ruining what you both have.” I was about to protest and tell my father that this marriage was just an arrangement, after all, as a mafia boss, love w
WEEKS LATER
NIKAELEON *** It has been weeks since Connor was arrested along with the leaders of the Black Knights. Some other lower ranked members had also been apprehended these past weeks. Connor and the leaders had already been tried in court and sentenced to life imprisonment. The others were still awaiting trial but it didn’t matter, they were just pawns, the main players were already in jail. Last I heard, Connor had been nearly paralysed and had to be hospitalised for almost two weeks. I had no sympathy for him and neither did the government, he was still sent back to prison on crutches to continue living with his assailants. My revenge on him was complete. Uriel had also been tried for illegal possession of a firearm and threatening people’s lives with it, but she hadn’t been sent to jail because I didn’t press charges to add to these ones. She was on house arrest for a year, with community service and court ordained therapy. I went to visit her occasionally so she could video call Soph
THE TRAP
NIKAELEON***A FEW DAYS LATER*The courtroom buzzed with tension as the arguments echoed through the room, each side presenting their case for Sophia's custody. It was Manolo’s turn to speak now."Your Honor, We have substantial evidence to establish that Ms. Uriel is mentally unstable and unfit to provide a stable and nurturing environment for Sophia. We also have expert testimonies from qualified mental health professionals who have evaluated Ms. Uriel and have concluded that her mental state poses a risk to the well-being of the child."We gave the court a video clip from the security footage from the mansion showing the moment Uriel had grabbed Sophia roughly after Sophia announced that she was having a sibling. There was no sound because it was CCTV, but it was evident that Uriel was being aggressive to Sophia. That was enough to help our case.Uriel's lawyer countered with equal enthusiasm.“Your Honor, I assure you that my client is mentally sound. Those reports were taken wh
ANOTHER CALL
NIKAELEON***“I know what you’re going to say, Aina. You want me to release them without punishment, but I can’t do that. Yes, I know they’re in love and no one is above mistakes, I also know that this crime isn’t as bad as it would have been if he had been the traitor.” I said to her as we stepped out of the interrogation room and began to walk towards the back entrance to the house.“If you know, then why can’t you just release them?” She asked.“I’m sure you already know why. I set my rules for a reason, and if someone breaks any of my rules, no matter how justified they are, there has to be a consequence or no one will respect my rules. That’s why there are laws, and prison is the consequence if those laws are broken.”“Can’t you make an exception just this once? She’s pregnant, Nik.” She said and I sighed.“I’m not sending them away if that’s what you think. For their own good and mine. If they aren’t here, they’ll be easy to kill by my enemies or captured and tortured for infor
MARIA
NIKALEOEN***“Fine. You can come along. But don’t interfere.” I said to her and the look she gave me said she would definitely interfere.“Don’t interfere too much.” I acquiesced with a sigh and she smiled.“And you better not cry.” I said to her and she huffed.“I’m not a baby.”As much as I wanted her by my side, I knew the path that lay ahead would test the limits of her resolve. "I never said you were a baby, Aina, this won't be easy. I may have to resort to violent means, and I may do things you may not approve. I don’t want you to resent me for it and begin to see me as some kind of monster. I really don't want you to witness what might transpire in that interrogation room. It could get ugly." I admitted.“I’ve always known there is a dark side of you, Nik. And I’ve made my peace with it. I know you don’t just go about torturing or hurting people on a whim or for fun, and when you do anything, it’s for a reason. I won’t blame you for anything you do today, you’re trying to pro
