Kael’s body hit the scorched earth with a dull thud, but he didn’t feel the impact. Darkness swallowed his vision, a suffocating void pressing against his chest. His ears rang with silence so deep it felt louder than thunder.

Then light. No, not light. Fire. Endless fire. He was standing or floating? in a vast expanse of flame. An ocean of molten heat stretched to infinity, its surface shifting like liquid glass, red and gold and black intermingling.

The sky above was not sky at all but a canopy of blazing embers that fell like dying stars. Kael gasped, clutching his chest. “Where… am I?”

The pyre answered with a voice that was not a voice, vibrating through marrow and soul: “YOU ARE WITHIN ME.”

Kael spun, spearless, bare handed. The fire itself was speaking, each surge of flame carrying words older than language. “YOU CALLED. YOU BURNED. YOU PAID. NOW THE PYRE CLAIMS ITS DUE.”
