The betrayal hit Ethan like a knife to the gut.

He stood frozen in the glittering Grand Ballroom, the ice bucket heavy in his numb hands, as Mr. Hargrove’s voice boomed across the stage.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the engagement of our beloved daughter Mia to Mr. Victor Langford!”

Applause exploded like thunder. Mia smiled up at Victor, radiant in a stunning red dress Ethan had never seen, her hand resting possessively on his arm. The massive diamond on her finger caught the light like a mocking blade.

After three years of sacrificing everything — his dreams, his savings, his dignity — this was how they repaid him.

Mrs. Hargrove brushed past him and hissed under her breath, “Don’t make a scene, Ethan. You were useful, but Victor brings contracts, connections, and real security for the family. I hope you understand.”

Ethan’s voice came out raw. “Useful? After everything I did? I took the blame for your husband’s tax fraud. I worked double shifts until my hands bled to cover Jake’s gambling debts. I cooked your meals before dawn, cleaned your house while you slept, and swallowed every insult and beating with a quiet ‘Yes, sir.’ All for Mia. All because I believed love meant sacrifice.”

Jake sauntered over with a cruel grin. “You really thought you’d marry her? After playing servant for years? Good little tool. But we need real money now, not some broke nobody who’s been leeching off us.”

Mr. Hargrove leaned in close, voice ice-cold. “This is business, boy. Your service is concluded. Don’t embarrass us any further.”

Mia finally glanced at him. For one fleeting second, pity flickered in her eyes. “Ethan… it’s not personal. You were always so… dependable. But Victor can give us the future we deserve.”

The words cut deeper than any knife. Ethan felt the humiliation burn hotter than any physical wound. No one stopped him as he set the ice bucket down with trembling hands and walked out into the pouring rain.

His phone buzzed. A message from Kelvin, one of Mia’s shady contacts.

Kelvin: “Ethan, bro. Mia’s mom said you’re still helping out. I’m in deep trouble at the old warehouse district. Come through quick, man. Need you to talk them down like you always do. She said you’d handle it. I’ll owe you big.”

Ethan stared at the screen, rain soaking through his cheap suit. His chest ached with exhaustion and fresh betrayal. He almost ignored it. But the need to prove he was still useful, still worthy, hit hard.

He drove through the storm.

The warehouse lot was dark and slick with rain. Before he could even step out of the car, shouts erupted. A gang clash exploded around him — rival groups screaming, guns flashing. It was a setup. Kelvin had lured him straight into it.

Gunshots cracked through the downpour. Pain exploded in Ethan’s chest and side as bullets tore into him. He collapsed onto the wet pavement, blood mixing with rainwater, his vision blurring.

In the distance, he heard Kelvin on the phone, voice casual and cold.

“Yeah, Mrs. Hargrove… it’s done. Ethan showed up just like you said. He’s taken care of. No loose ends. Your daughter’s finally free of that dead weight.”

The words cut deeper than the bullets.

In his fading moments, Ethan’s fingers brushed the worn paperback in his glovebox — Radiant Empire: Chronicles of the Chosen One, the last gift from his father before he passed. “Stories teach us to keep fighting, son,” his dad had said with that gentle smile.

After everything I sacrificed… they already forgot me.

Pain slammed back into him.

Then the world went black.

Cold marble scraped against his cheek. Iron manacles bit deep into his wrists. The sharp metallic taste of blood flooded his mouth.

Ethan’s eyes snapped open to a vast hall lit by floating magical orbs. Heavy crimson-and-black noble robes clung to a taller, stronger body that wasn’t his. Memories that weren’t his crashed into his mind.

He was Vesper Kane — the empire’s most hated villain from the very book his father had given him.

A calm, slightly tired male voice spoke directly into his mind.

“Damn, Ethan. Or should I call you Vesper now? Rough night, huh? You’ve been dropped into the body of the guy who dies screaming in exactly 365 days. This world doesn’t like anomalies.”

A glowing blue window appeared.

“Survival probability? Zero point zero one percent. Yeah… it’s that bad. Mess this up and your soul gets wiped clean. No second chances.”

A steel boot slammed into his ribs. Agony ripped through him.

“Still breathing, you filth?” Elias Stormweaver — the golden-haired Chosen One — loomed over him, sword drawn. Behind Elias, the two heroines glared with pure hatred.

“This is straight out of the book,” the voice said dryly. “Everyone here wants you dead. Your own family included.”

“I didn’t—” Ethan rasped.

Seraphina’s sword hilt cracked across his jaw. Blood sprayed.

“You don’t get to speak, monster!”

“Plot correction hitting hard,” the voice muttered. “Odds just dropped to zero point zero zero eight percent. They really despise this guy.”

Elias grabbed a fistful of his hair and yanked his head back. “Your father is only delaying your execution for appearances. Give me one reason I shouldn’t end you right here.”

Ethan forced a bitter, broken laugh. “Because if you kill me now… you’ll never know what’s really coming for this empire.”

The grand doors burst open. Kane family guards stormed in. One hauled him roughly to his feet while pressing a hidden dagger against his side.

The blade sank in.

“New mission, Ethan,” the voice said urgently. “Survive the next twenty-four hours. Pull it off and I’ll give you a beginner survival package plus a hundred deviation points. Fail… well, you know the rest.”

Chaos erupted. Steel clashed. Spells flashed. Another assassin lunged from the shadows.

Ethan twisted desperately. The dagger carved a burning line across his shoulder. Hot blood poured down his back as the guards dragged him toward a side exit.

“The world is correcting itself fast,” the voice warned. “Adapt or die, kid. Just like they discarded you before.”

Ethan gritted his teeth against the pain and fear.

Not this time.

But as they pulled him into the dimly lit corridor, a dozen more blades glinted in the darkness ahead.

The cabin felt too small for the weight of what had just been said.Rain tapped against the wooden roof in an uneven, restless rhythm. Outside, the hunting horns sounded again — closer this time, carried on the cold wind from the direction of the border town. Ethan stood just inside the doorway, dagger still raised, the leather grip slick against his palm. His left shoulder throbbed with every heartbeat. Selene had not lowered her blade. Lirael’s staff remained lit with a low silver glow that cast long, shifting shadows across the rough walls.Elara looked up at them without flinching. Dried blood marked the corner of her mouth. The heavy iron cuffs around her wrists glowed faintly with suppression runes that pulsed in time with her breathing. Her eyes, though clearly exhausted, were sharp and clear. There was no pleading in them. Only a quiet, weary recognition.“Her energy is unstable but not fully corrupted,” the System said inside Ethan’s mind. “S

  • Chapter 11: The Western Road

The tunnel felt endless. Ethan ran with one hand pressed against the rough stone wall to keep his balance. The air was cold and damp, thick with the smell of wet earth, old roots, and the faint metallic scent of his own blood. Every step sent a dull, stubborn throb through his left shoulder where the shadow spear had struck. The System’s healing had stopped the bleeding and closed the worst of the wound, but the deep ache remained — a constant reminder that his body was still struggling to keep up with the night’s violence. His legs felt heavy, as if the ground itself were trying to pull him down. His lungs burned with every breath. Selene led the way, moving with quiet certainty even in the near-darkness. Her footsteps were almost silent. Lirael followed close behind Ethan, her staff dimmed to a soft silver glow that barely lit the path ahead. None of them spoke for a long time. The only sounds were their uneven footsteps, the distant roar o

  • Chapter 10: No Safe Ground

The courtyard of the old tannery felt like a cage closing in.Rain hammered the cracked stone in heavy sheets. The storm above twisted tighter with every passing second, purple lightning flashing inside the dark clouds like veins of something alive. Ethan stood with his back almost against the wall, dagger raised, chest heaving. Every breath scraped his throat raw. His left shoulder still burned from the earlier spear of shadow, the numbness only half-cleared by the System’s healing. Selene stood at his right, blade steady, rain running down her face in thin lines. Lirael was a few paces to the left, silver light still flickering weakly around her staff. Between them and any possible exit stood two corrupted figures — Aric Voss and the second man who had just lowered his hood. The second man’s face was familiar too. In the original novel he had been one of the lesser nobles who helped push Vesper toward his final destruction. Now his eyes glowed with

The wave of dark energy hit them like a living wall of ice and hate.Ethan barely had time to react. He threw himself sideways, grabbing Selene’s arm and yanking her with him as the blast tore through the trees. Bark exploded outward. The ground cracked open. The freezing force of the attack left the air itself feeling brittle, like it might shatter if he breathed too hard. His heart slammed against his ribs so violently he could hear it over the storm’s roar.“That attack carried residual Fracture energy,” the System said, voice tight and urgent inside his head. “He’s not just a failed transmigrator — he’s been feeding on the Awakening for years. Direct contact will corrupt you. Stay mobile.”Ethan rolled to his feet, lungs burning, every muscle screaming from the night’s endless fighting. The numbness from earlier wounds still clung to his left arm. His body felt wrong in a way that went beyond pain -it was too strong, too fast and still felt like i

  • Chapter 8: The First Fracture

The herald’s dark tendrils lashed out like living whips, tearing through the ruins with terrifying ease. Ethan dove behind a crumbling pillar as one passed inches from his head, the freezing energy it left behind making the air itself feel brittle. His heart pounded so hard he could hear it over the storm’s roar.“Global Plot Event active,” the System said, its voice strained. “The Awakening is now aware of you, Ethan. Every major faction will feel the shift. Survival probability down to 0.04%. This is the world trying to force the story back on track by any means necessary.”Selene fought beside him, her blade a blur as she cut through tendrils that tried to ensnare her. Lirael, the silver-haired heroine, had joined the fray against the herald as well — her magic clashing with the dark energy in brilliant explosions of light and shadow. For the moment, their rivalry was forgotten in the face of this greater threat.“This thing shouldn’t exist yet!” Lirael shouted,

  • Chapter 7: Storm of Awakening

The dark storm churned across the sky like a living thing, purple lightning crackling within its swirling clouds. It moved faster than any natural weather, drawn toward them with unnatural purpose. Ethan’s legs burned as he ran beside Selene, the numbness from the Void Watcher’s curse still lingering in his arm like a cold shadow. Every step sent a fresh wave of exhaustion through him, but stopping meant death.“The Awakening is accelerating,” the System said, its voice tight with urgency. “That storm isn’t just weather. It’s looking for anomalies — for you. Survival probability down to 0.09%. We need to find shelter or break its tracking.”Selene glanced back, her silver hair whipping in the rising wind. “The border town is two hours away at this pace. We won’t make it if that storm catches us. There’s an old ruin half a mile east. It might give us temporary cover.”Ethan nodded, his mind racing. The revelation about his father’s book still weighed on him like a st
