Ethan’s heart hammered against his ribs like it wanted to break free. The Kane family guards dragged him down the dimly lit corridor, their rough hands digging into his arms. Torches flickered on the cold stone walls, casting long, monstrous shadows that danced like demons coming to claim him. The wound on his shoulder burned like liquid fire, hot blood soaking through the luxurious crimson robes and dripping down his back. Every jolt and shove sent fresh, blinding agony through the stab wound in his side.

But his brain kept chanting "Not again God, not again."

The familiar sting of betrayal clawed at his chest — Mrs Hargrove’s cold eyes at the engagement party, Kelvin’s fake message luring him to his death, the casual way they had discussed erasing him like he was nothing. Now here he was, in another world, still the disposable one. Still the villain everyone wanted gone.

“Move faster, Ethan,” the System’s voice cut through his mind, tense and sharp, like a friend who was trying not to panic. “Those blades behind you aren’t for show. Your own people want you dead more than the hero does right now. Move!”

Footsteps thundered closer. Steel scraped against stone. A dozen guards, maybe more, their faces twisted with greed for whatever reward the Duke had promised.

Rage boiled up through the terror, hot and raw. *I gave everything to them. Everything. And they threw me away like garbage.* He wasn’t going to let it happen again and definitely not on the very first night.

With a desperate, animalistic twist, Ethan slammed his elbow into the nearest guard’s face. Cartilage crunched sickeningly. The man howled. Ethan spun, headbutting the second guard hard enough to see stars himself, then snatched a fallen dagger from the floor. His hands shook — from pain, from fear, from three years of swallowed humiliation finally exploding.

Chaos erupted in the narrow hall.

“Not bad for a guy who just got reincarnated,” the System said, sounding genuinely impressed. “But you’re still outnumbered. Mission timer: 23 hours and 41 minutes left. Don’t you dare die on me now.”

He fought like a cornered animal — slashing wildly, dodging, using the original Vesper’s muscle memory even as his new mind recoiled at the violence. Two guards went down screaming. A spell blast from behind cracked the wall, showering him with dust and debris that stung his eyes.

“Left passage! Now!” the System guided urgently.

Ethan burst into an old storage room, heart in his throat, and slammed the heavy door shut, barring it with a broken beam. His chest heaved. For a second, the world narrowed to the sound of his own ragged breathing and the violent pounding on the door.

“You’ve got maybe two minutes,” the voice warned, laced with real worry. “I can grant the Beginner Survival Package once you finish the mission, but you have to live first. Fight for it, Ethan. You’ve been discarded once — don’t let them do it again.”

The door splintered. Through the gap, Ethan saw hatred in their eyes. He spotted a weak spot in the far wall — an old servant escape route buried in Vesper’s memories. Desperation gave him strength. He charged, slamming his injured shoulder into it with a scream of pain. Wood and stone exploded outward.

He tumbled into the cold night air, rolling painfully down a muddy slope. Shouts and arrows whistled behind him. One grazed his leg, drawing a sharp hiss from his lips.

“Eastern forest! Run! Don’t stop!”

Branches whipped his face, leaving stinging cuts. Pain screamed through every wound. Blood loss made his vision blur at the edges, turning the world into a dizzying nightmare. But he kept moving, legs burning, lungs on fire, driven by the raw fear of being forgotten again and dying becaue he was someone else’s inconvenience.

He reached the treeline when the final guard stepped out of the shadows, sword raised for the killing blow.

Ethan didn’t think. He threw his dagger with everything he had left. It sank into the man’s chest with a wet thud. The guard fell.

Silence.

Ethan collapsed against a tree, gasping, tears of exhaustion and relief mixing with the blood and mud on his face. The System’s voice rang out with clear relief.

**“Mission complete. Twenty-four hours survived. Beginner Survival Package granted. +100 Deviation Points. Survival probability now at 0.12%. Healing starting.”**

A warm, soothing energy flowed through his battered body. The worst of his wounds began to close slowly.

A new skill appeared: "Minor Plot Insight".

For a moment, hope flickered in his chest and he began thinking that maybe he could actually do this. And maybe this time he could change his fate.

But before he could even catch his breath, the System’s tone shifted sharply.

“Wait… Ethan. Something’s wrong. This isn’t right.”

A blood-red notification flashed violently in his vision.

**[Major Plot Correction Detected]**

**[The World has accelerated events. Assassins from House Kane and the Royal Guard are converging on your location.]**

“They’re coming,”the System said, voice tight with alarm. “A lot of them. And they’re not alone.”

Ethan pushed himself up on shaking legs, every muscle screaming. Through the trees, he saw dozens of torchlights moving rapidly toward him like a swarm of fireflies from hell. In the distance, the baying of hunting hounds echoed through the night, hungry and closing fast.

Then a calm, aristocratic voice sliced through the darkness — cold, disappointed, and terrifyingly familiar.

“Vesper… my disappointing son. Did you really think you could run from your fate?”

Duke Reginald Kane stepped into the clearing at the edge of the trees, tall and imposing in black-and-gold armour. Flanked by elite knights and a hooded mage whose power made the air crackle, his eyes glowed with pure killing intent.

The Duke raised his hand slowly.

“New Hidden Mission: Survive Until Dawn,” the System announced urgently. “Failure means permanent death. This one’s going to be brutal.”

Ethan gripped his bloody dagger tighter, heart pounding with a mix of fury and bone-deep fear as the circle of enemies closed in.

"Not this time… I won’t be their tool again." The sheer passion for survival made him silently mutter these words.

But as moonlight revealed the sheer number of blades and spells aimed at him, a chilling new realisation hit, one that made his blood run cold.

The Duke wasn’t alone.

Duke Reginald Kane stepped into the clearing, flanked by elite knights and a hooded mage. His eyes burned with killing intent.

“New Hidden Mission: Survive Until Dawn,” the System announced urgently. “Failure = permanent death.”

Ethan gripped his dagger, heart sinking as the circle closed in.

But the true twist came when the System whispered one final, devastating line:

“Ethan… the person who personally ordered this hunt tonight wasn’t the Duke. It was someone else. Someone I can’t identify yet.”

A soft, unfamiliar laugh echoed faintly from the shadows behind the Duke’s forces — calm, confident, and chilling.

The first spells lit up the night sky.

The black tide rose fast.Ethan barely had time to shout before the unnatural water surged under the stone arches, thick and cold as liquid shadow. It moved with purpose, climbing the stone as if it had hands. Selene grabbed his arm and yanked him hard toward higher ground along the bank. Elara moved with them without needing to be told. Lirael sent a sharp burst of silver light into the rising water, forcing it back for a few precious seconds and buying them the space they needed.Aric’s laughter echoed from the ridge above, calm and almost pleased.“Run if you like,” he called. “The river will find you eventually.”They scrambled up the muddy slope, boots slipping, hands scraping against wet stone, until they reached a narrow ledge half-hidden behind one of the larger arches. The space was tight — barely enough room for the four of them to press in without touching. The stone at their backs was cold and damp. Below, the black water continue

  • Chapter 13: The River Path

The river path was narrower than Ethan expected. They moved in single file along the muddy bank, the dark water rushing loudly on their right. The rain had slowed to a thin, cold drizzle that still managed to find every gap in their clothes and trickle down the back of Ethan’s neck. His boots sank slightly with each step, the mud pulling at him as if the ground itself wanted to keep him there. His left shoulder continued to throb in time with his heartbeat. The numbness from the earlier shadow wound had faded, but a deep, bruise-like ache remained, making every swing of his arm feel heavier than it should. His legs burned. His lungs felt tight.Selene walked at the front, blade drawn, eyes constantly scanning the treeline and the higher ground. Elara followed close behind her, still rubbing her freed wrists from time to time as if surprised they were no longer bound. Lirael brought up the rear, staff held low but ready, her silver light kept deliberately dim.

  • Chapter 12: The Bound Heroine

The cabin felt too small for the weight of what had just been said.Rain tapped against the wooden roof in an uneven, restless rhythm. Outside, the hunting horns sounded again — closer this time, carried on the cold wind from the direction of the border town. Ethan stood just inside the doorway, dagger still raised, the leather grip slick against his palm. His left shoulder throbbed with every heartbeat. Selene had not lowered her blade. Lirael’s staff remained lit with a low silver glow that cast long, shifting shadows across the rough walls.Elara looked up at them without flinching. Dried blood marked the corner of her mouth. The heavy iron cuffs around her wrists glowed faintly with suppression runes that pulsed in time with her breathing. Her eyes, though clearly exhausted, were sharp and clear. There was no pleading in them. Only a quiet, weary recognition.“Her energy is unstable but not fully corrupted,” the System said inside Ethan’s mind. “S

  • Chapter 11: The Western Road

The tunnel felt endless. Ethan ran with one hand pressed against the rough stone wall to keep his balance. The air was cold and damp, thick with the smell of wet earth, old roots, and the faint metallic scent of his own blood. Every step sent a dull, stubborn throb through his left shoulder where the shadow spear had struck. The System’s healing had stopped the bleeding and closed the worst of the wound, but the deep ache remained — a constant reminder that his body was still struggling to keep up with the night’s violence. His legs felt heavy, as if the ground itself were trying to pull him down. His lungs burned with every breath. Selene led the way, moving with quiet certainty even in the near-darkness. Her footsteps were almost silent. Lirael followed close behind Ethan, her staff dimmed to a soft silver glow that barely lit the path ahead. None of them spoke for a long time. The only sounds were their uneven footsteps, the distant roar o

  • Chapter 10: No Safe Ground

The courtyard of the old tannery felt like a cage closing in.Rain hammered the cracked stone in heavy sheets. The storm above twisted tighter with every passing second, purple lightning flashing inside the dark clouds like veins of something alive. Ethan stood with his back almost against the wall, dagger raised, chest heaving. Every breath scraped his throat raw. His left shoulder still burned from the earlier spear of shadow, the numbness only half-cleared by the System’s healing. Selene stood at his right, blade steady, rain running down her face in thin lines. Lirael was a few paces to the left, silver light still flickering weakly around her staff. Between them and any possible exit stood two corrupted figures — Aric Voss and the second man who had just lowered his hood. The second man’s face was familiar too. In the original novel he had been one of the lesser nobles who helped push Vesper toward his final destruction. Now his eyes glowed with

  • Chapter 9: The Corrupted Echo

The wave of dark energy hit them like a living wall of ice and hate.Ethan barely had time to react. He threw himself sideways, grabbing Selene’s arm and yanking her with him as the blast tore through the trees. Bark exploded outward. The ground cracked open. The freezing force of the attack left the air itself feeling brittle, like it might shatter if he breathed too hard. His heart slammed against his ribs so violently he could hear it over the storm’s roar.“That attack carried residual Fracture energy,” the System said, voice tight and urgent inside his head. “He’s not just a failed transmigrator — he’s been feeding on the Awakening for years. Direct contact will corrupt you. Stay mobile.”Ethan rolled to his feet, lungs burning, every muscle screaming from the night’s endless fighting. The numbness from earlier wounds still clung to his left arm. His body felt wrong in a way that went beyond pain -it was too strong, too fast and still felt like i
