The courtyard of the old tannery felt like a cage closing in.

Rain hammered the cracked stone in heavy sheets. The storm above twisted tighter with every passing second, purple lightning flashing inside the dark clouds like veins of something alive. Ethan stood with his back almost against the wall, dagger raised, chest heaving. Every breath scraped his throat raw. His left shoulder still burned from the earlier spear of shadow, the numbness only half-cleared by the System’s healing. Selene stood at his right, blade steady, rain running down her face in thin lines.

Lirael was a few paces to the left, silver light still flickering weakly around her staff. Between them and any possible exit stood two corrupted figures — Aric Voss and the second man who had just lowered his hood.

The second man’s face was familiar too. In the original novel he had been one of the lesser nobles who helped push Vesper toward his final destruction. Now his eyes glowed with the same starry darkness as Aric’s, empty of anything human.

“Two fully corrupted transmigrators in one place,” the System said, voice low and tense inside Ethan’s mind. “This is coordinated. The Backer is no longer testing you. He is collecting you. Survival probability is currently 0.02%. Do not let either of them touch you.”

Aric smiled as if they were discussing the weather over tea. “You look tired, new player. That is the first thing that breaks most of us. The constant running. The knowledge that the story itself wants you gone.”

Ethan spat blood onto the wet stone. The copper taste in his mouth was becoming familiar, and he hated that. “I’m not most of you.”

“No,” Aric agreed, almost gently. “You’re louder. More stubborn. Your father was the same way near the end.”

The mention of his father hit like a physical blow. Ethan’s grip on the dagger tightened until his knuckles went white and the leather-wrapped handle dug into his palm. The memory rose unbidden — the worn paperback in the glovebox, the last gentle smile, the quiet words about stories teaching people how to keep fighting. His father had lived this nightmare. Had tried to end the cycle. And now the responsibility sat on Ethan’s shoulders like iron chains he had never asked to carry.

For a moment he was back in the rain of his old world, bleeding out on the warehouse floor while Kelvin’s casual voice celebrated his death on the phone. The same feeling of being erased. The same cold emptiness.

Selene spoke without taking her eyes off the two men. Her voice was calm, but Ethan could hear the tension underneath. “If you came to talk, talk. If you came to fight, stop wasting time.”

The second corrupted man laughed softly. “We came to collect. The Backer wants the anomaly intact. He believes this one might finally be useful.”

Lirael’s staff brightened, silver light reflecting in the rain. “You will not take him.”

Aric tilted his head toward her with mild interest. “Heroine of the story, still playing your role even after the script has started to tear. How loyal. How tragic.”

The fight exploded without further warning.

Aric moved first, a blur of shadow and steel. Selene met him head-on, their blades ringing sharply in the rain. Sparks and black energy mixed with the downpour. The second man raised both hands and sent a wave of dark spears toward Ethan and Lirael. Lirael’s silver barrier flared brightly, but several spears still slipped through. One tore across Ethan’s left shoulder, reopening the earlier wound and sending a fresh trail of freezing numbness down his arm.

He staggered but refused to fall. Pain was familiar now. Betrayal was familiar. Being hunted was familiar. He had already been discarded once in his old life — used until he had nothing left, then erased without ceremony. He would not let this world do the same.

“The numbness is corruption trying to take root,” the System warned. “Fight it. Use the last of your healing if you must.”

Ethan forced the remaining healing energy through his body. It felt like pushing warm water through frozen pipes. The cold retreated slowly, leaving behind a deep, throbbing ache that made his fingers tremble. He charged the second man anyway, dagger low. Their weapons clashed with a harsh metallic ring. The corrupted transmigrator was stronger and more experienced, but Ethan fought with the raw desperation of someone who had already lost everything that once mattered. Every strike carried the memory of the engagement party, the ice bucket in his hands, Mia’s pitying glance, and the casual way they had thrown him away.

Across the courtyard, Selene was being pushed back. Aric’s shadow tendrils kept reforming no matter how many times she cut them. Lirael sent a burst of concentrated silver light that forced Aric to defend, giving Selene a precious moment to breathe and reset her stance.

“You cannot win this fight cleanly,” the System said. “The tannery has an underground exit behind the main building. If you can reach it, the wards will slow pursuit for a short time. But you will have to break through.”

Ethan saw the opening through the chaos. “Selene! Left side — now!”

They moved together without needing to discuss it. Lirael covered them with a wide silver shield that absorbed the next wave of dark energy, the light flickering under the strain. The three of them sprinted toward the rear of the tannery as the two corrupted men gave chase. Aric’s laughter followed them into the building, calm and almost fond.

Inside, the air smelled of old leather, dust, and damp wood. Ethan’s legs felt like they might give out beneath him. His shoulder burned with every swing of his arms. His lungs ached as if he had been running for days instead of minutes. But he kept moving. Selene kicked open a hidden trapdoor behind a stack of rotting crates. A narrow stone stairway led down into darkness that smelled of wet earth and age.

They dropped into the tunnel one after another. Above them, heavy footsteps and the sharp crack of dark magic echoed through the building. The trapdoor slammed shut. Selene jammed a thick metal bar across it with a grunt of effort.

For a few precious seconds there was only the sound of their ragged breathing and the distant roar of the storm above the town.

Lirael leaned against the tunnel wall, blood seeping through a tear in her sleeve. She looked at Ethan with an expression that was no longer pure hostility.

“This changes everything. If what you say about the book and the previous cycles is true… the hero needs to know. The empire needs to know.”

Ethan met her eyes. Rain and sweat still ran down his face. “If you tell Elias everything, he will try to kill me before the Awakening does.”

“I know,” she said quietly. “That is why I have not decided what I will report yet.”

Selene checked the tunnel ahead, her voice practical but tired. “My contacts still have a secondary route that leads out of the town toward the western hills. If we move now, we can lose them in the storm.”

“The Backer will not stop,” the System said. “He has already marked you. Other corrupted transmigrators will begin moving toward your location. And the Awakening’s avatar is still forming. You have bought time, not safety.”

Ethan wiped rain and blood from his face with a shaking hand. The weight of his father’s final attempt pressed down on him again, heavier than the wounds. He had been given a second chance. He refused to waste it the way he had wasted the first one — by giving everything to people who never valued him.

“Then we keep moving,” he said, voice rough but steady.

They ran through the dark tunnel as the storm raged above the town. Behind them, the trapdoor shuddered under heavy blows. Ahead, the path led toward uncertain safety and even greater threats.

Ethan did not look back.

The First Fracture had only begun to open.

And the real game, as Aric had called it, was far from over.

Ethan stood just inside the doorway, dagger still raised, the leather grip slick against his palm. His left shoulder throbbed with every heartbeat. Selene had not lowered her blade. The heavy iron cuffs around her wrists glowed faintly with suppression runes that pulsed in time with her breathing. Her eyes, though clearly exhausted, were sharp and clear. There was no pleading in them. Only a quiet, weary recognition.“Her energy is unstable but not fully corrupted,” the System said inside Ethan’s mind. “S

The tunnel felt endless. Ethan ran with one hand pressed against the rough stone wall to keep his balance. The air was cold and damp, thick with the smell of wet earth, old roots, and the faint metallic scent of his own blood. Every step sent a dull, stubborn throb through his left shoulder where the shadow spear had struck. The System’s healing had stopped the bleeding and closed the worst of the wound, but the deep ache remained — a constant reminder that his body was still struggling to keep up with the night’s violence. His legs felt heavy, as if the ground itself were trying to pull him down. His lungs burned with every breath. Selene led the way, moving with quiet certainty even in the near-darkness. Her footsteps were almost silent. Lirael followed close behind Ethan, her staff dimmed to a soft silver glow that barely lit the path ahead. None of them spoke for a long time. The only sounds were their uneven footsteps, the distant roar o

The wave of dark energy hit them like a living wall of ice and hate.Ethan barely had time to react. He threw himself sideways, grabbing Selene’s arm and yanking her with him as the blast tore through the trees. Bark exploded outward. The ground cracked open. The freezing force of the attack left the air itself feeling brittle, like it might shatter if he breathed too hard. His heart slammed against his ribs so violently he could hear it over the storm’s roar.“That attack carried residual Fracture energy,” the System said, voice tight and urgent inside his head. “He’s not just a failed transmigrator — he’s been feeding on the Awakening for years. Direct contact will corrupt you. Stay mobile.”Ethan rolled to his feet, lungs burning, every muscle screaming from the night’s endless fighting. The numbness from earlier wounds still clung to his left arm. His body felt wrong in a way that went beyond pain -it was too strong, too fast and still felt like i

  • Chapter 8: The First Fracture

The herald’s dark tendrils lashed out like living whips, tearing through the ruins with terrifying ease. Ethan dove behind a crumbling pillar as one passed inches from his head, the freezing energy it left behind making the air itself feel brittle. His heart pounded so hard he could hear it over the storm’s roar.“Global Plot Event active,” the System said, its voice strained. “The Awakening is now aware of you, Ethan. Every major faction will feel the shift. Survival probability down to 0.04%. This is the world trying to force the story back on track by any means necessary.”Selene fought beside him, her blade a blur as she cut through tendrils that tried to ensnare her. Lirael, the silver-haired heroine, had joined the fray against the herald as well — her magic clashing with the dark energy in brilliant explosions of light and shadow. For the moment, their rivalry was forgotten in the face of this greater threat.“This thing shouldn’t exist yet!” Lirael shouted,

The dark storm churned across the sky like a living thing, purple lightning crackling within its swirling clouds. It moved faster than any natural weather, drawn toward them with unnatural purpose. Ethan’s legs burned as he ran beside Selene, the numbness from the Void Watcher’s curse still lingering in his arm like a cold shadow. Every step sent a fresh wave of exhaustion through him, but stopping meant death.“The Awakening is accelerating,” the System said, its voice tight with urgency. “That storm isn’t just weather. It’s looking for anomalies — for you. Survival probability down to 0.09%. We need to find shelter or break its tracking.”Selene glanced back, her silver hair whipping in the rising wind. “The border town is two hours away at this pace. We won’t make it if that storm catches us. There’s an old ruin half a mile east. It might give us temporary cover.”Ethan nodded, his mind racing. The revelation about his father’s book still weighed on him like a st
