Predicament

Troy was walking over a bridge when he saw an old man, frail with grey hair clutching his chest and gasping for air to no avail.

Troy ran over to the man immediately, he wanted to help. He hovered over the old man that shook convulsively, Troy was worried the man was dying and then he stooped to maintain eye contact with the man.

“What's wrong?." Troy asked. The man opened his mouth to speak but no words were coming out, just whispers and gasps.

Troy was confused. There was an expensive looking black car that the man layed beside, the doors were open and there was nobody in there. Troy could see that the man looked opulent, the car must belong to him, Troy thought and he ran over to the car.

The first thing his eyes fell on was the inhaler laying idly on the back seat. Immediately Troy understood what was happening, he reached for the inhaler and he helped the man with it.

After a while the man stopped shaking, he was fine. He had just saved the life of a multi billionaire without knowing it. The man introduced himself as Williams.

Troy was a nobody, he was working as a bartender in a small bar that people barely visited. He was coming back from a hard day of work when he saw the man and naturally he was compelled to help him without wondering what his status was.

The Late Mr Williams gave his beautiful granddaughter to Troy as an act of showing gratitude for saving his life. Troy got married to his granddaughter Vivienne Williams and he has to live in the family house which was a mansion.

Sadly, after a few months Mr Williams passed away, suddenly Troy's life became a living hell.

THREE YEARS LATER

“Beggar!." The high pitched voice of an angry woman echoed through out the enormous living room.

Troy was wearing a blue jumpsuit, the clothing of a janitor. He worked as a janitor in one of he biggest hotels in the city. He was married to a wealthy family but he spent his days cleaning halls just to earn little money.

Troy had been called a lot of degrading names by the family of his wife Vivienne Williams, and even his wife too would verbally abuse him, but that was the first time he was called a beggar.

It was Mrs Nancy, Vivienne's mother that had called him a beggar because he had returned from work hungry and tired and asked her if the maid had prepared dinner yet.

Troy looked down at his worn out shoes, he would not have asked Vivienne's mother for food if he was not so hungry, at the back of his mind he knew that she might react the way she did but he was too hungry to think about the consequences.

Vivienne had walked to the living room because she heard her mother shouting. She had just finished doing her nightly facial routine and she looked like an angel. Her brown hair shone and it fell over her beautiful milk-like skin, her blue eyes were intensely sensual.

She was not surprised when she saw that her mother was yelling at Troy, the good for nothing husband her grandfather had forced her to get married to. She had no say in the matter then but she was happy that her family members were seeing how Incompetent he truly is, and she was hoping that they'll put an end to their marriage.

She was disgusted to see Troy in his blue jumpsuit.

“Mother, what did this good for nothing scum bag do this time?." Vivienne asked her mother crossing her hands over her chest. A smile was playing on her lips.

" This looser husband of yours had the guts to ask me for food. He contributes nothing to this family, yet he loves to eat good food!." Mrs Nancy yelled. “Do you know how expensive it is to prepare just breakfast and we eat lavishly because we earned it, we're the Williams, known world wide to be the richest family in the state, but look at you, you're a low life.. a janitor, you should eat with the dogs outside in their cage. I don't know what Mr Williams was thinking when he got you married to my precious daughter but I think it's about time you loose the title of a husband!." Mrs Nancy said.

Vivienne's smile widened. Troy looked at her and her smile turned to an icy glare.

" I'm sorry for asking you for dinner, I didn't mean to disrespect you but I contribute to this household ma'am. I do the hard labour, I fix the damages caused by wear and tear and I feed myself as I am constantly reminded that I have no place in your table. I don't ask for anything in return, I'm loyal to your daughter and this family, I know I'm poor and I got married into this family by luck but I have a good heart and I'm hardworking, if you can just see that and stop maltreating me." Troy was saying, Mrs Nancy stood up from her seat and threw a slap across his cheek.

It stung.

" You're nothing, whether you have a good heart or not, you're a nobody, and you should be treated as such." Mrs Nancy said to Troy.

He nodded his head and fought the urge to talk back at her. He was too hungry to utter another word. He walked by Vivienne and she scuffed. Although they had been married for three years, she had never shown any sort of affection towards him. They slept in two different rooms, he wasn't allowed to touch her hands, he knew nothing about the intimacy of a married man, it was as if he was the slave and she was his saviour.

His legs were wobbly as he climbed the stairs. He heard Mrs Nancy and Vivienne talking from the living room, they thought he had gone but they didn't know he was still close enough to hear him.

“You should divorce that pile of trash. It's about time you found yourself a husband that you can be proud of, someone that can provide for you, someone from a very wealthy family..." Mrs Nancy said. " What about Francis?." Mrs Nancy asked her daughter. " He's worth billions."

Troy heard Vivienne giggle. He climbed down a few steps and he stood behind the wall adjourning the living room and staircase that led up. Thoughts were running wild in his head as he wondered who Francis was. Was Vivienne cheating on him?.

“Mother, I and Francis are getting closer than I expected. I don't think it's something I can discuss openly." Vivienne said In a hushed tone.

" You can tell me anything." Mrs Nancy said to her.
