"Daddy?" The small voice stopped Logan Hayes in his tracks, and his heart skipped a beat. He turned to face the boy staring up at him with wide eyes, eyes that reflected his own. "What did you call me?" Logan asked, his voice thick with disbelief and surprise, he has been waiting all his life for someone to call him a dad. "You're back?" Maya Dawson’s voice cut through the air, tense with shock and an unmistakable hint of anger. Logan turned slowly, meeting the gaze of the woman he had spent five years dreaming of. "I never wanted to leave." His words came out as a plea, filled with emotion. Maya shook her head, with a cold tone. "You didn't just leave, Logan. You disappeared." Logan stepped closer, narrowing his eyes. "You think I abandoned you? It was your family, Maya. They forced me out. I fought my way back for you only to find you married to someone else." Her voice wavered as she whispered, "You have no right to come back and disrupt my life now. Richard is my husband." Logan's voice dropped to a low, intense whisper. "Is he my son?" Maya’s silence told him everything. Five years ago, Logan Hayes was forced out of Maya Dawson’s life, pressured by her powerful family into walking away from their marriage. Once a struggling dock worker and the illegitimate son of the Carlton family, Logan left without a word, leaving Maya heartbroken and convinced he had abandoned her.

CHAPTER ONE: A RETURN TO SHADOWS

Logan Hayes stood at the door of Dawson Industries, his heart pounding as he took a deep breath. It had been five long years since he last saw her, but today, everything was about to change. He wasn’t the same man who had left poor, broken, and desperate. Now, he was a decorated general, a man with power and purpose. But none of that mattered as much as the question burning in his mind.

He took a step forward and entered the building, making his way to the top floor where Maya’s office was. The elevator ride felt endless, and when the doors opened, he felt the tension grip him tighter. He approached the receptionist and said firmly, “I’m here to see Maya Dawson.”

The receptionist looked surprised but nodded. “Do you have an appointment?”

“No,” Logan said flatly. “But tell her Logan Hayes is here.”

Her eyes widened, and she quickly picked up the phone, speaking in a hushed tone. After a moment, she hung up and gestured to the door. “You can go in.”

Logan pushed open the door to her office, and there she was Maya, sitting behind her desk, looking as beautiful as ever. Her long dark hair was pulled back, and she wore a sleek business suit, but her face showed the same mix of surprise and fear he had imagined it would.

“Logan,” she whispered, standing up slowly.

“Maya,” Logan replied, stepping further into the room. “We need to talk.”

Maya hesitated, her eyes filled with confusion and unease. “I didn’t expect to see you again… not like this.”

“Yeah, well, I didn’t plan on coming back either,” Logan admitted, his voice filled with emotion. “But I saw something someone that changed everything.”

Maya’s face paled. “Logan, I don’t know what you mean…”

“You know exactly what I mean,” Logan said, his jaw clenched. “I saw the boy, Maya. The boy who looks just like me.”

Maya froze, her hand gripping the edge of her desk. She had prepared for this moment for years, but now that it was here, she felt completely unprepared. “Logan, please, let me explain—”

Logan cut her off, with a sharp voice. “Explain what? That you had my son and never told me? That I’ve missed years of his life?”

Maya’s eyes filled with tears, but she held herself together. “It wasn’t like that, Logan. I had no choice. My family… They convinced me it was for the best. They told me you wouldn’t want to be part of our lives.”

Logan’s fists tightened at his sides, anger boiling inside him. “Your family? They always hated me. Of course they would say that. But you how could you believe them? How could you keep my son from me?”

“I was scared!” Maya cried, her voice breaking. “I didn’t know what to do. I was alone, pregnant, and everyone told me it was the right thing to do.”

Logan’s face softened, but only slightly. “You should have told me. I would have been there. No matter what, I would have been there.”

Maya wiped a tear from her cheek, trying to steady her voice. “Logan, it wasn’t just about us. Ethan our son deserved a stable life, a life without the complications that come with… with us.”

Logan shook his head, his heart aching. “I’m his father, Maya. I deserve to be in his life.”

Maya looked away, the weight of her decision pressing down on her. “I know. You’re right. But I didn’t know how to tell you. After you left, everything became so complicated, and then Richard… he stepped in.”

Logan’s eyes narrowed at the mention of Richard. “Richard? You married him?”

Maya nodded slowly. “Yes. He’s been a good father to Ethan.”

Logan took a deep breath, trying to control his emotions. “Do you love him, Maya?”

Maya’s eyes widened, and she opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She didn’t know how to answer that question, not truthfully. She had convinced herself that she loved Richard, but now, standing in front of Logan, everything felt different.

“I care about him,” she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper.

Logan stepped closer, his eyes locked on hers. “That’s not what I asked.”

Maya’s heart raced as she stared at Logan. The connection between them was still there, undeniable and strong. She had tried to forget it, bury it deep inside, but now, with Logan standing so close, it all came rushing back.

“I thought I was doing the right thing,” Maya whispered, tears filling her eyes again. “I thought you were gone for good.”

Logan’s face softened, and he reached out, gently taking her hand. “I never stopped loving you, Maya. Not for a single day.”

Maya closed her eyes, her heart breaking all over again. “Logan, I… I don’t know what to say.”

“You don’t have to say anything,” Logan said softly. “I’m not here to destroy your life. But I’m here for Ethan. He’s my son, and I want to be in his life.”

Maya nodded, her mind spinning with the enormity of what was happening. “I know. You have every right. But how… how are we supposed to make this work?”

Logan straightened, determination filling his voice. “We’ll figure it out. I’ll make sure Ethan knows me, and I’ll be there for him, no matter what. But I need you to trust me, Maya. I need you to believe that I’m not going to run away this time.”

Maya wiped her eyes again and took a deep breath. “I want to believe that, Logan. But things are so complicated now. Richard… he’s been there for Ethan since the beginning.”

Logan frowned, his voice firm. “I respect that. But I’m his father, Maya. I have to be in his life.”

Maya looked up at him, her heart torn between the past and the present. “I don’t want to hurt him. I don’t want to confuse Ethan.”

Logan stepped closer, his voice gentle but filled with resolve. “We’ll take it slow. I’m not asking for everything at once. But I won’t walk away from my son.”

Maya nodded, finally letting out a shaky breath. “Okay. We’ll figure this out.”

Logan looked at her, his expression softening. “Thank you, Maya. For giving me a chance to be in his life.”

Maya gave him a small, sad smile. “You deserve that chance, Logan. You always did.”

As the two stood in silence, the weight of the years between them hung heavy, but for the first time in a long while, there was hope hope that things could be different now.
