Dust danced in the pale afternoon light as Garrett pushed open the squeaky front door of his childhood home.

The house smelled of mold and old memories.

Two days. That was all that remained of the mandatory thirty-day cooling-off period for his divorce. Finally, the end was within reach. Once Friday passed, his divorce would be finalized, and this rotting, empty shell of a house would become his permanent home. The thought alone made his chest feel heavy.

He dragged a cardboard box across the living room floor, his knees popping under the strain. Five years of nonstop physical labor had worn his body down to the bone. Working three jobs a day just to scrape together enough cash to pay off his late parents’ crippling debts had left his hands rough and damaged, but it was the hollow feeling in his chest that hurt the most.

He tipped the box to clear out the old high school textbooks when something hard clinked against the floorboards.

Garrett stooped down and picked it up. It was a plain, scratched black USB drive.

Curiosity flickered through his exhaustion. He brushed off the grime with his thumb, walked over to the battered laptop sitting on a plastic crate, and plugged it in.

The drive loaded instantly. No folders, no photos, no documents—just a single text file labeled Vault.

Garrett clicked it.

Inside was a string of chaotic letters and numbers—a cryptographic private key.

Beneath it was a short, handwritten note:

“Thanks for saving my family, brother. Don’t sell too early.”

Garrett stared at the screen. A chill ran down his spine.

Fifteen years ago. High school.

The memory hit him like a punch.

He remembered Mark pounding on his bedroom window in the dead of night, breathless, his eyes red and wide with fear. Local thugs had dragged Mark’s older brother into a massive drug debt and were threatening to torch their house with his family locked inside if they didn’t get a thousand dollars by morning.

Garrett hadn’t hesitated. He emptied his college savings account that night, putting every cent he had saved into Mark’s hands.

Mark had squeezed his fist around the money, shoved the flash drive into Garrett’s palm, and told him it was collateral until he could pay him back.

He never got the chance.

That very night, Mark bought an illegal gun off the streets, confronted the gang leader, and took him down in an alley before dying in the crossfire himself. Mark’s family fled the city before sunrise, terrified for their lives.

Garrett had never asked for repayment. He had thrown the drive into a box of junk and forgotten it ever existed.

Garrett opened a browser, navigated to a crypto wallet recovery page, and pasted the private key into the field.

The loading circle spun once.

Twice.

Then the balance refreshed.

Garrett held his breath.

25,000 BTC.

Directly below the number, the conversion bar calculated the live market value: $1,000,000,000.00 USD.

One billion dollars.

The mouse slipped from Garrett’s sweaty palm and clattered against the crate. He stumbled back, struggling to catch his breath.

One billion…

His mind raced back through the five years of hardship he had just survived.

Shortly after he married Evelyn, his family’s enterprise was systematically destroyed in a corporate setup. Overnight, he went from a wealthy heir to a debtor drowning in millions of dollars of debt.

He hadn’t run. He hadn’t broken.

He worked eighteen-hour days—delivering food in the freezing rain, scrubbing warehouse floors, and driving late-night shifts until his eyes burned.

Anything to keep a roof over Evelyn and their five-year-old son, Toby. He made sure Evelyn had nice clothes, fresh groceries, and a comfortable lifestyle, while he survived on $2 gas station sandwiches eaten alone in his car.

And how had she repaid all that sacrifice?

A month ago, Evelyn had slammed a stack of divorce papers onto the dining table, her eyes cold and distant.

“Look at you, Garrett. You’re exhausted, broke, and pathetic,” she had spat, her face filled with disgust. “I can’t spend the rest of my life living like a beggar with you. I’m sick of counting pennies.”

He hadn't fought her. He had taken the blame, signed the papers without a word, and surrendered their house, their car, and every remaining dollar in their bank account to her and Toby. He thought he was a failure. He thought he owed her that much for failing to give her the life she deserved.

And now... this.

A laugh escaped Garrett’s throat—a dry, sob-like sound that made his ribs ache.

He wasn't broke anymore. He was richer than the people who had ruined his family.

“Toby... Evelyn...” he rasped, tears suddenly burning behind his eyes.

The resentment in his chest faded, replaced by a desperate, naive hope. She had only left because of poverty, right? Because she was tired of watching him struggle? Now, the nightmare is over. He could restore his family. He could give his son the world.

There were still two days left before the divorce was legally finalized. He could still save his family!

Garrett didn't bother calling. He grabbed his jacket, rushed out and jumped into his car. He hit the gas and sped toward Toby’s elementary school. Evelyn had mentioned that morning that she’d be picking up Toby today. He wanted to see her face when he broke the news in person: We don't have to split up. We're free.

Twenty minutes later, Garrett slammed on his brakes across from the school gates.

Through the dirty windshield, he saw them immediately. Evelyn stood near the sidewalk in a crisp white trench coat, looking gorgeous, while little Toby stood beside her, swinging his backpack.

Garrett’s heart raced. He unbuckled his seatbelt, pushed his car door open, and smiled with relief. “Evelyn! Toby—”

The words froze in his throat.

A sleek black Bentley pulled up to the curb in front of them. The driver’s door opened, and a man in a custom-tailored designer suit stepped out. He was handsome, well-dressed, and clearly wealthy.

Before Garrett could even process who he was, five-year-old Toby squealed, ran forward, and threw his arms around the stranger’s legs.

“Daddy!” Toby cheered, his face lighting up.

Garrett froze, his fingers tightening around the edge of the car door. The cold wind bit into his face, but he barely felt it.

“Daddy?”

Evelyn walked over to the man, a soft smile lighting up her face—a smile Garrett hadn't seen in five long years. The man casually slid an arm around her waist, pulling her close, and pressed a kiss to her cheek. Evelyn leaned into his chest, looking completely at home in his arms.

Standing together under the sun, the three of them looked like a perfect family.

Garrett felt as if something had been driven deep into his stomach and slowly twisted. The sound of traffic and shouting schoolchildren seemed to fade away.

The stranger chuckled softly, running a hand through Toby’s hair before looking down at Evelyn. His voice was casual, carrying quiet authority.

“Have you taken care of things on that end yet?”

Evelyn smiled up at him, reaching into her expensive handbag. “Oh, I almost forgot. The cooling-off period ends in two days, but I’ll make sure he signs the expedited waiver right now so we don’t have to wait another minute for him to get out of our lives.”

She pulled out her phone and tapped the screen.

A second later, the phone in Garrett’s pocket began to ring.

His hands were numb, but the shaking had stopped. He flexed his fingers once, feeling the stiffness in his knuckles. He looked out at the dark alley, then caught his reflection in the mirror. The broken look in his eyes was gone, replaced by a dangerous clarity. He was sitting on a fortune worth two billion dollars. He held the key to an offshore empire that could buy and sell Theo Hudson three times over.Crashing his car or throwing his life away in a fit of rage over two manipulative leeches was the stupidest thing he could do.They weren't worth his future. They weren't even worth his anger.Garrett took one last deep breath and reached for the gearshift. He had spent five years destroying himself for people who never deserved it.He wasn't going to waste another minute.Garrett put the car in

  • CHAPTER 9: TARGET LIST

“Two targets,” Garrett said, his voice flat. “My first target is my wife, Evelyn Dalton.”Jason picked up the paper and adjusted his reading glasses. “Give me the specifics.”“Evelyn Ross. Thirty years old! Senior marketing specialist at Apex Media Group. Her office hours are eight-thirty to five, but for the past six months, she’s claimed to work late three or four nights a week.”Jason’s pen scratched across his notepad. “Does she drive?”“A white 2021 Toyota Camry. It’s registered under both our names, but I paid it off last year.”“What about her routine?”“She drops our son off at school at eight-fifteen every morning. Tuesdays and Thursdays, she claims to go to a gym on 4th Street after work. Verify whether she’s actually going inside or meeting someone in the parking lot.”Jason nodded, jotting down the details. “Alright. If she’s not working late or at the gym, my people will find out where she really goes. Now, who’s target number two?”Garrett’s jaw tightened slightly.“Her

  • CHAPTER 8: EYES IN THE SHADOWS

Garrett had barely made it to the elevators when Victoria’s door opened behind him. The sharp sound of her heels echoed down the hallway.“Garrett, wait up,” she called, walking toward him with a folder in her hand.He turned around, resting his bag against his leg. “Is something wrong?”“Not wrong. Just a detail we need to plan for,” Victoria said, stopping in front of him. “We can handle all the legal paperwork for the Singapore company right here from my office, but turning the digital money into actual cash means you’ll have to go there in person.”Garrett’s brows furrowed. “I have to fly to Singapore?”“Just for two days,” Victoria explained.“Because of Singapore’s strict banking laws, a new account holding this much money requires the owner to sign the papers at the bank in person. Once you sign the first papers, you can handle every transfer online from anywhere in the world.”Garrett thought about it quickly. Flying out of the country for two days meant he would be away right

  • CHAPTER 7: 3% DEAL

Victoria leaned back, studying the screen.“Moving two billion dollars isn’t as simple as a bank transfer,” she said. “If you sell it through a public app or put it straight into your local account, the tax authorities will flag it, the bank could freeze the money, and your wife’s lawyers might find out before the day is over.”Garrett stayed silent for a moment. “Then what do we do?”“We build a legal wall around it,” Victoria said, tapping the screen with her pen. “First, I’ll set up a company for you in Singapore. Once it’s registered, we’ll move the digital money into the company as assets you owned before you got married.”Garrett leaned forward. “And after that?”“Then I bring in my firm’s international tax experts and crypto brokers,” Victoria said. “They’ll handle the sale privately instead of dumping everything on the open market. That keeps the price from dropping while we sell.”She paused, meeting his eyes.“My team will structure the entire process so the money ends up in

  • CHAPTER 6: BILLION DOLLAR CLIENT

The receptionist put down the phone and looked at Garrett differently.“Mr. Dalton... Ms. Mercer will see you right now,” she said, her cold voice now hesitant and polite. “End of the hall. Door on the left.”Garrett nodded, picked up his duffel bag, and walked past the front desk.He knew why that door had opened so fast.It wasn't his name. And it definitely wasn't his denim jacket. It was Malcolm Reed.Malcolm was a lead murder detective with the city police and Garrett’s childhood friend. He had eaten at Garrett’s family table long before they lost everything. When everyone else turned their backs on Garrett, Malcolm was the only one who stayed loyal. Two hours ago, after leaving the testing lab, Garrett had called him from his car. • CHAPTER 5: THE LINE IN THE SAND

The heater in Garrett’s old car rattled loudly, blowing barely warm, dusty air against his hands as he drove through the morning traffic. On the passenger seat, his duffel bag sat open just enough for him to see the three transparent plastic bags inside. He glanced at his rough hands gripping the wheel. Five years of lifting drywall, moving pallets, and driving late-night shifts had left them hard and worn. He had worked himself to the bone for a wife who treated him like a servant. He wasn't angry anymore. The fury he'd felt outside Toby's school had hardened into something colder—like ice.Ten minutes later, Garrett pulled into the parking lot of Veritas Forensics, a low, gray-brick building tucked inside an industrial park outside the city. A small sign beside the glass doors read: Clinical Testing & Diagnostic Services. He grabbed his bag, turned off the car, and stepped into the damp morning air.Inside, the lobby smelled of floor wax and old coffee. A small TV in the corner play
