The morning mist hung low over the cobblestone roads of the border town as Arthur shouldered his meager travel pack. The air carried the crisp, damp scent of pine and crushed leaves, signaling the transition into the central territories of the Kingdom of Solaria.

Arthur adjusted the straps of his worn leather vest, checking his system interface one last time before stepping onto the main highway.

[Current Objective: Travel to the Capital City of Oakhaven]

[Secondary Requirement: Escort Vesper safely through the Whispering Pass]

Behind him, a light, rhythmic tap of leather boots against stone announced Vesper's arrival.

She wore the simple grey traveling cloak and soft linen tunic Arthur had bought her two days ago. Her silver hair was neatly braided down her back, and though her expression remained guarded and impassive, she no longer looked like the ragged, starved prisoner he had found in the dungeon cellar. Her sharp crimson eyes scanned the surrounding forest with practiced lethargy, the quiet alertness of a predator that had survived sixty-five consecutive hunts.

"You're three minutes late."

Vesper said coolly, stepping up beside him.

Arthur smiled faintly, falling into step beside her while maintaining a comfortable two-foot cushion of space.

"The innkeeper was handing out dried meat rations for travelers. I grabbed extra for the road."

He reached into his pouch and held out a wrapped bundle of cured beef. Vesper eyed his hand warily for a split second before taking it, her slender fingers briefly brushing against his palm.

A tiny spark of warmth flitted across her chest, but she quickly suppressed it, biting into the savory meat with an indifferent crunch.

"So."

Vesper began, her eyes fixed on the winding mountain trail ahead,

"The Royal Academy of Oakhaven. A prestigious institution full of self-righteous nobles and pampered spellcasters. Why are we going there?"

"The system gave me an entry pass."

Arthur explained truthfully, keeping his voice low so passing merchant wagons wouldn't overhear.

"Solaria is undergoing silent corruption. The mana veins across the continent are decaying, and the central nexus happens to be buried beneath the academy's grand library. If the corruption reaches critical mass, the entire region collapses."

Vesper let out a bitter, quiet laugh.

"And let me guess. The great 'system' expects you to play the noble hero, solve the academy's ancient crisis, and save everyone?"

"Something like that."

Arthur admitted, his tone turning quiet and reflective.

"Though to be honest, I don't care much about being a hero. I just need to finish this quest."

Vesper glanced sideways at him. His grey eyes looked tired, carrying a weight that felt far older than his youth would suggest. For the past three days, she had tried to pick apart his motives. She had searched every word, every gesture, and every pause for the telltale signs of greed or hidden malice that every previous player possessed.

Some players had tried to buy her with jewels; others had tried to flex their combat skills or dominate her with binding magic. All of them viewed her as an asset to be collected.

Arthur was entirely different. He didn't brag. He didn't flex his status. He worked odd jobs in town to buy her bread, gave her room to breathe, and looked at her not like a prize, but like a person caught in a storm alongside him.

Why won't you just show your real teeth? Vesper thought, an irritating ache settling deep in her heart. If you acted like the others, it would be so much easier to hate you. It would be so much easier to tear your throat out and end this.

"You're being too soft."

Vesper said suddenly, her voice cutting through the rustling wind.

Arthur blinked, looking over at her.

 "What?"

"In this world, soft people get eaten alive."

Vesper spat, her crimson eyes flashing with cold intensity.

"You gave me freedom. You gave me money. You let me keep a knife in my sleeve while you slept on the floor. Do you have any idea how stupid that is, Arthur? I could have slit your throat ten times over while you were dreaming about saving your family."

Arthur didn't flinch. He slowed his pace slightly, turning his head to meet her sharp, fierce gaze head-on.

"You could have."

Arthur agreed softly.

"But you didn't."

Vesper stopped dead in her tracks.

The wind caught her silver hair, blowing stray locks across her flushed cheeks. She stared at him, her lips parted slightly in astonishment.

"I didn't because... because it wasn't the right time!"

She snapped, her defense sounding hollow even to her own ears.

"Vesper."

Arthur said, his voice brimming with a quiet, undeniable sincerity that struck her like a physical blow.

"You've been hurt by everyone who ever came near you in this world. You killed them because they tried to take away your humanity. I'm not going to force you to trust me, and I'm not going to demand your gratitude. But I won't treat you like a threat either."

He turned back toward the path, stepping forward into the morning sun.

"If treating you like a human being makes me soft, then I'll just have to be soft."

Arthur added with a gentle, reassuring smile over his shoulder.

"Now come on. The pass narrows up ahead, and we should reach the carriage station before noon."

Vesper stood frozen on the dirt road, watching his retreating back.

Her heart was hammering wildly against her ribs, a hot, dizzying surge of emotion flooding through her veins. It was a terrifying feeling,a loss of control far more profound than any chain or cage she had ever endured.

She grabbed her chest over her tunic, her teeth digging into her lower lip as she felt her face burning with an intense heat.

He's dangerous, she realized with a shudder, her throat tight with unspooled emotion. The others tried to break my body. But this idiot... this idiot is trying to melt my heart.

She took a deep, shaky breath, straightened her cloak, and hurried forward to catch up with his long strides, careful,as always,to stay right by his side.
