To save his bedridden sister and rescue his family from financial ruin, Arthur enters Solaria: World’s End, a hyper-realistic virtual reality game where death in-game results in permanent neural brain death outside. His mission: conquer the heart of Vesper, a villainous NPC whose tragic backstory and forced-affection script have driven her to murder 65 previous players who attempted to subjugate her through violence and contracts. Arthur is the 66th player. Vesper plans to plunge a rusted iron shank into his throat the moment his guard drops. Instead, Arthur subverts every expected script: he breaks her suppression shackles, feeds her hot food, rents a clean room in town, and sends her to study at the academy, all while respecting her space. When the system subjects Arthur to severe punishment lightning for refusing to force a romance, he accepts the agony and hands her his savings, urging her to run before his time expires. Shaken by his selflessness, Vesper kisses him just seconds before the deadline, raising her affection level to a meager 5/100. As they navigate the kingdom’s brewing corruption and academy crises, Vesper finds herself unexpectedly falling for Arthur, confused by his refusal to show the possessive obsession of past players. Meanwhile, Arthur's gentle restraint gives way to genuine love, setting off a dangerous, slow-burn emotional dynamic where both must defy the system to save each other and their collapsing world.

Chapter 1: The 66th Executioner

With every passing second inside the damp stone cellar, Arthur found it harder to breathe.

The hyper-realistic nerve gear translated the ambient chill directly into his spine, sending cold shivers through his blood. To his family, this was just an immersive neural gaming pod lying in a clinical facility, paid for by mortgaging everything they owned. But to Arthur, every breath was real. The smell of copper and stale moss in the dark, the burning sensation in his lungs, it was all terrifyingly real.

His system interface flickered faintly in the corner of his retinas, glowing with a soft, translucent amber hue:

[World Quest: The Salvation of Solaria]

[Current Objective: Win the heart of the Calamity NPC — Vesper.]

[Failure Condition: Death in-game / World Collapse.]

 [Target Affection Level: 0 / 100]

[Warning: 65 Players Have Attempted. 65 Players Have Been Terminated.]

Arthur took a deep breath, steeling his nerves as he took his first step down the slick stone stairs leading deeper into the dungeon under the fallen fortress.

Sixty-five players before him had entered this world treating it as a sandbox. They were conquerors, min-maxers, and arrogant speedrunners who assumed that an NPC, no matter how detailed, was merely code meant to be subjugated. They had tried chains, blood-contracts, physical torture, and violent coercion to break her scripted path.

Every single one of them had died in agonizing pain, erased from the server.

At the base of the stairs sat a girl huddled against the cold stone wall. Her wrists were bound in heavy, iron-spiked shackles that hummed with suppression runes. Her torn leather garments were stained with old grime, and her long, silver hair hung tangled over her face. But as Arthur's footstep clicked against the flagstone, she looked up.

Her eyes were a striking, incandescent crimson, piercing, cold, and entirely devoid of human warmth.

Vesper stared at the boy standing before her. She didn't see a hero. She saw a skin-suit wrapped around another hollow, greedy soul.

Number sixty-six, Vesper thought, her fingers tightening secretly behind her back around a jagged piece of rusted iron she had concealed beneath her tunic. He looks younger than the others. Cheeks are still soft. Eyes too wide.

She knew how this went. He would step forward, proclaim himself her master or her savior, offer her a fake smile, and demand her submission to trigger his quest log. And the moment he bent down to touch her, she would plunge the iron shard into his throat, just as she had done sixty-five times before.

"Don't come closer."

Vesper rasped, her voice rough from days without water. It was a test, a script she knew by heart.

Arthur paused three steps away. He didn't pull out a contract scroll. He didn't draw a sword. Instead, his eyes fell upon her blood-crusted wrists where the iron spikes bit into her flesh.

"That looks terrible."

Arthur murmured softly.

Vesper narrowed her eyes, her pulse quickening with cautious malice. Ah. The gentle approach. The illusion of sympathy.

"I know what you're trying to do."

She snarled, her red eyes flashing with sudden, raw danger.

"Unbind me if you want, little puppet. But touch me with your filthy hands, and I will tear your heart out before your system can log the pain."

Arthur didn't answer with words. He reached into his basic starter inventory and pulled out the heavy, steel-cutting pliers he had spent his last starting coins on instead of armor or weapons. Kneeling down on the cold floor, leaving a respectful two feet of distance between them,he carefully aligned the pliers with the hinge of her left restraint.

Snap.

The heavy iron split open. The suppression magic dissipated with a faint hiss.

Vesper froze. Her rusted iron shard slipped slightly between her fingers. He hadn't asked for a prompt. He hadn't demanded a contract pledge.

Before she could process the shock, Arthur moved to her right wrist and snapped the second lock. The heavy chains fell to the floor, echoing loudly in the quiet cellar.

"Can you walk?"

Arthur asked gently, looking up at her with clear, unhurried grey eyes.

"I brought some bread and warm broth from the town above. It's not much, but... you shouldn't have to stay down here."

Vesper stared at the broken shackles, then back at the boy. Her mind raced wildly, searching for the trick, the trap, the hidden mechanism. Was he trying to lure her into an ambush outside? Was this a new psychological tactic devised by the system creators?

"Why?"

She spat, her hand still locked onto the rusted shard.

"What is your game, player?"

"My name is Arthur."

He said, offering a small, tired smile as he set a wooden container of warm stew on the ground between them.

"And I don't want to conquer you. I just want to help you get out of here."

Vesper stared at the steaming soup, the aroma of herbs and meat filling the stale air. Her stomach betrayed her with a low rumble, but her gaze remained locked onto his neck.

He's lying, she told herself firmly. He has to be. The moment I turn my back, he will reveal his true intent. I'll kill him tomorrow. Or the day after.
