Chapter One

Mael stood by one of the booths in the restaurant he works for, wiping on the wooden counter with a stainless napkin when a middle aged man came from his behind.

“You’ve been cleaning this table for the past how many minutes now and you’re yet to finish?” He filed out in a scolding tone, morphing a frustrated look with his hands coming to rest on the sides of his waist.

The couple occupying the booth vacated nothing less than a minute ago, and he was instantly sent to clean it up. That he obliged and was already getting rebuked.

“I’m sorry, Mr Smith.” Mael apologized politely with a head nod, wiping the table a little faster.

“You should be the one apologizing to him old man.” A woman spoke up, seated on a chair with his legs crossed in front of Mael. She had the booth gripped for her presence.

Mr smith glanced at her, a bit taken aback by her words. She sure wasn’t talking to him or meddling in an affair that doesn’t implore her concern.

“Excuse me?” He batted his lashes, gazing at the woman with a questioning look.

“I said you should apologize right now to-“

“Thank you Miss, but this is none of your business and I will handle it myself.” Mael chipped in before the woman could complete her statement, flashing her a platonic smile.

“Just get this over with and meet me in my office.” The man passed his message, turning around and departing the scene.

Leaving Mael with the mysterious beautiful and tall woman who graced the restaurant some while ago, particularly visiting Mael to share with him the strangest news ever.

How absurd? Letting him know that he was the most magnificent and respected member of a secret group, initiated under certain knowledges and given the name “The Vicious Circle.”

Of course he didn’t believe or termed her crazy, but she kept on saying things that messed with his notion about all she’s been blabbering about.

She told him he was injured while on a secret mission three years ago that resulted in a memory loss, and that seemed canny enough for him to see deeper to her explanation.

True, he only has memory of his life starting from three years ago and has no idea what his past was about.

Mael still wasn’t convinced enough, “You should get going, you’re starting to interrupt the peace in my work.” He suggested, halting his cleaning movement for a while to pass the message.

“This place you work in doesn’t suit you or your peace, the organization we both work for gave each and every of its members a special bank card, and you sure must have yours. You’d be shocked by the amount placed in the account to spend for base amenities. You should get your card, withdraw some cash and stop putting yourself up with this struggle, and if you indeed get the money; it should serve as proof that all I’ve been saying is the truth and you don’t belong here.” The woman gave one final exposition, earning nothing but a blank look from Mael.

She sighed with an eye roll, reaching for her handbag as she stood up to exit the building.

Mael was back to the comfort of his solitude as he returned to finish cleaning the table. That was until a presence showed up behind him, dumping two luggage boxes on the floor and a paper slamming on the table he was cleaning.

He stared from the paper, looking up to the one who slammed it as her face belonged to that of his mother in law.

Her brows were stretched and a furious look etched above her expression. “This is a divorce paper between you and my daughter, and down here are your worthless belongings. I’m cutting your useless life loose from my family. Sign that paper and don’t you dare think of returning to my house.” Her eyes blazed as she made the statement, pointing at the paper flayed on the table.

“Where is Blair?” Mael quizzed instead, contrary to what was proffered in front of him.

“Don’t you dare ask about my daughter, she’s leaving your wretched lame ass for a someone who worth her. Tyson has been chasing to put a ring on her finger for so long, he’s rich and everything she wanted. We’re done with you, and I don’t ever want to see your face in that house again.” She lashed out at him, almost digging a pointed finger in his eyes.

Mael’s placid gaze wavered into a glare, irritated by all his mother in law was spewing out since she arrived. He looked to the divorce agreement with a pen beside it.

He can’t believe Blair, his wife agreed to this. With a nurturing disappointment, he picked the pen signing the divorce papers.

Once he was done, the woman reached over, snatching her pen and the papers from him. “Now don’t ever step foot in our house again.” She sentenced, eyeing him with disgust as she turned around and exit through the door.

Mael scoffed at her restriction, he was useless to them and yet they took the house he bought because the owner’s name had his daughter’s name on it.

They’ve always been an ingrate bunch of fuckers who never appreciated all he’s ever offering, because of them he’s juggling more than three jobs just to make them happy. Yet they still do not see his sweat.

So thankless, his mother in law would insult him this much all because of money.

At the thought of money, his mind wailed to his moment with the strange woman, he had said a lot of things that stuck to his mind. The special bank card for instance, could she actually be telling the truth about that.

She was right about the card, because there’s this weird card he’s always carrying with him. He has no idea what it is or what he does, he has no idea it is a bank card.

Mael reached for his back pocket, fetching the card out to inspect. The richly designed item with fine prints all over.

If all the woman said to him about the card is true, he needs to confirm himself.

He took off his apron, signing off from work without telling anybody and setting his destination straight to the bank.

He needed validation for what the woman said.
