Darkness.

Endless darkness stretched in every direction.

Only two figures remained visible.

Ethan.

And the Sovereign.

The question lingered between them.

"If saving the Nine Realms required betraying the people you loved... would you do it?"

No pressure followed.

No threats.

No countdown.

The Third Fragment simply waited.

Ethan stared at his former self.

The answer seemed simple.

Yet it wasn't.

Not after everything he had seen.

Not after witnessing the loyalty of the Nine Generals before the betrayal.

Not after seeing fear in the eyes of a man powerful enough to rule existence.

The Sovereign watched patiently.

Eventually Ethan spoke.

"No."

The answer echoed through the darkness.

The Sovereign didn't react.

Didn't smile.

Didn't frown.

He simply listened.

Ethan continued.

"If I betray the people I love..."

He thought of the Carter family.

Despite how they treated him.

He thought of Luna.

Aurelius.

Selene.

Even Kael.

"...then what exactly am I saving the world for?"

Silence followed.

The Sovereign studied him carefully.

Then nodded.

"A reasonable answer."

The darkness shifted.

Reality transformed.

Suddenly Ethan stood within a memory once more.

This time the atmosphere felt different.

Heavier.

More urgent.

The palace was no longer peaceful.

Guards rushed through corridors.

Officials argued.

Messengers ran everywhere.

Something had happened.

Something significant.

The Sovereign moved through the chaos.

His expression remained calm.

Yet Ethan sensed the tension beneath it.

Then the memory brought him to a war room.

Several generals stood inside.

Aurelius.

Kael.

Selene.

Orion.

Darius.

And others Ethan still couldn't identify.

The atmosphere was grim.

A massive map floated above the center table.

The Nine Realms.

Every region.

Every kingdom.

Every world.

Yet something was wrong.

A dark stain spread across the map.

Slowly consuming everything.

Ethan frowned.

The sight felt familiar.

Too familiar.

The Sovereign stared at it silently.

Then Kael broke the silence.

"It's spreading faster."

Nobody disagreed.

Selene folded her arms.

"We're running out of time."

Aurelius looked exhausted.

"How many worlds?"

The answer came from Orion.

His voice was quiet.

"Seven."

Silence followed.

Then another number.

"Lost this week."

The room became deathly still.

Seven worlds.

Gone.

Destroyed.

Ethan watched carefully.

The generals weren't discussing conquest.

They weren't discussing power.

They were discussing survival.

The realization unsettled him.

Then the Sovereign finally spoke.

"Evacuate everyone."

Kael immediately shook his head.

"We can't."

The answer surprised Ethan.

The Sovereign frowned.

"Why?"

Kael pointed toward the dark stain.

"The corruption follows life."

The room became even quieter.

The implication was horrifying.

Running wouldn't solve anything.

The corruption would simply follow.

Then Darius spoke.

One of the few times he contributed.

"What about the Door?"

The room froze.

Every general became silent.

Even the Sovereign's expression hardened.

The reaction was immediate.

Instinctive.

Dangerous.

Darius continued.

"If the corruption originated from beyond the Door..."

A pause.

Then:

"...perhaps the solution is there too."

Nobody answered.

Not immediately.

Eventually Selene spoke.

"Or perhaps that's exactly what caused this."

Darius smiled slightly.

"A possibility."

The memory shifted.

Days passed.

Then weeks.

The corruption continued spreading.

World after world disappeared.

Entire civilizations vanished.

Nothing stopped it.

Nothing slowed it.

Not even the Sovereign.

Ethan watched countless scenes.

Battles.

Evacuations.

Sacrifices.

Desperation.

The Nine Realms were losing.

Badly.

Then came another memory.

One Ethan immediately recognized as important.

The Sovereign stood alone.

Inside a private chamber.

Only one other person was present.

Kael.

The Third General.

No guards.

No witnesses.

No interruptions.

Just the two of them.

The atmosphere felt heavy.

The Sovereign looked tired.

More tired than Ethan had ever seen.

Then he spoke.

"I found a solution."

Kael's eyes widened.

For a brief moment, hope appeared.

Then he noticed the Sovereign's expression.

And the hope vanished.

"What does it cost?"

The question came instantly.

Without hesitation.

Without doubt.

As though Kael already knew.

The Sovereign closed his eyes.

Several seconds passed.

Then he answered.

"Everything."

Silence.

The room became still.

Kael slowly sat down.

His face had become pale.

"What kind of solution?"

The Sovereign looked toward the window.

Toward distant stars.

Then he answered.

"The Door."

The atmosphere immediately changed.

Kael stood.

"No."

The response was immediate.

Absolute.

The Sovereign didn't argue.

Didn't defend himself.

He simply remained silent.

Kael paced across the room.

Clearly agitated.

Clearly frightened.

Ethan had never seen him like this.

Then Kael stopped.

"What did you see?"

The question lingered.

The Sovereign hesitated.

Then answered.

"The future."

Silence.

Ethan froze.

Kael froze.

Even the memory itself seemed quieter.

The future?

The Sovereign continued.

"I opened the Door."

Shock crossed Kael's face.

"You promised—"

"I know."

The interruption carried guilt.

Deep guilt.

Then the Sovereign looked directly at his friend.

And Ethan finally saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for everyone else.

"I saw what happens if we fail."

Kael slowly sat back down.

His expression had become grave.

Then he asked the question Ethan wanted answered.

"What did you see?"

The Sovereign remained silent.

For a very long time.

Then finally spoke.

And the answer changed everything.

"I saw the end."

The memory trembled.

Reality distorted.

Stars vanished from the sky.

The chamber darkened.

The Sovereign's voice became quieter.

Yet every word carried enormous weight.

"No heavens."

"No realms."

"No life."

"Nothing."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Then he finished.

"Everything dies."

Kael stared at him.

Unable to speak.

Unable to move.

The Sovereign looked away.

Then delivered the final blow.

"The only future where humanity survives..."

A pause.

Then:

"...is the one where I die."

The memory shattered.

BOOM!

Darkness returned.

Ethan stood alone once more.

Breathing heavily.

His mind raced.

The Sovereign had foreseen his own death.

Not merely death.

Necessary death.

The realization was overwhelming.

Then the Sovereign reappeared.

Standing several meters away.

Watching him carefully.

"Now you understand."

Ethan looked up.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"Now I have more questions."

For the first time, the Sovereign smiled.

A proud smile.

The smile of a teacher watching a student learn.

Then he nodded.

"Good."

The darkness around them began cracking.

The trial was entering its next stage.

And somewhere beyond those cracks...

The truth about the betrayal awaited.
