The deeper Leo descended into the subterranean maze beneath Sector 4, the less the tunnels resembled human engineering. The concrete walls had been entirely chewed away, replaced by vast, pulsating layers of translucent, calcified resin that hummed with a sickly green glow. The stench was almost thick enough to turn a man’s stomach—a choking mixture of concentrated ammonia, melting rock, and wet rot.

Every step forward came with a wet, sticky suction beneath his boots. The floor was carpeted in thick, vein-like tendrils of alien flora that vibrated whenever his weight shifted.

Above him, suspended from the resin-coated ceiling like grotesque fruit, hung dozens of calcified cocoons. Through the milky, semi-transparent shells, Leo could make out the twisted, withered shapes of human skeletons—the remnants of the two C-rank mercenary squads Vance had mentioned back at The Hole. Their high-tier steel armor had been turned into brittle, pitted slag, completely melted away by the hive’s bile before they could even draw their weapons.

CLICK-CLICK-CLICK.

From the shadowy arches ahead, small swarms of Acid-Spitter Drones began to emerge. Dozens of them. They crawled along the curved ceiling, skittered up the walls, and clogged the central floor, their needle-like jaws snapping rhythmically as their neon-green acid sacs swelled in unison.

[WARNING: Entering Nesting Grounds of the Hive Queen]

[Enemy Density: High]

[Hazard: Concentrated Acid Pool / Saturated Chemical Atmosphere]

"A full infestation," Leo murmured, his voice echoing flatly off the slick walls.

He reached up with both hands and unbuttoned his ruined trench coat, letting the heavy, acid-scorched fabric slip off his shoulders and hit the wet resin floor with a dull thud. He stood in the dim green light wearing only dark trousers and his black tactical vest, his bare arms and chest exposed to the corrosive air.

Underneath his skin, the silver-hued scars from his earlier burns glinted softly. The Void-Infused Kinetic Gauntlets on his forearms hummed, the obsidian metal absorbing the ambient heat and vibration of the hive.

The swarm didn't wait. Without warning, a salvo of over twenty pressurized jets of boiling, bright-green acid erupted from the darkness, converging on Leo from every angle.

It was a wall of pure liquid fire.

Leo didn't try to roll under the spray or take cover behind the resin pillars. He planted his boots into the sticky floor, squared his jaw, and welcomed the wave.

SZZZZZZZZT!

The acidic deluge slammed into him like a high-pressure fire hose. The chemical bile covered his face, his chest, his shoulders, and his legs, boiling away his tactical vest in seconds and tearing into his flesh. The heat was instantaneous and total, scorching his skin down to the raw layer below and melting his boots against the floor.

The agonizing pain hit his central nervous system like a lightning strike, every nerve ending screaming in absolute, unadulterated shock.

AAAGH!

Leo fell to one knee, his hands digging deep into the resin floor as his teeth ground together so hard his gums bled. The sheer volume of acid threatened to strip his flesh from his bones before his body could adapt.

Then, deep within his chest, the dark engine of The Infinite Trial System roared into overdrive.

[CRITICAL DAMAGE SUSTAINED: Massive Chemical Corrosion & Systemic Shock.]

[Pain Converted!]

[Strength +6]

[Endurance +10]

[Agility +3]

[Corrosive Acid Resistance +12% (Total: 25%)]

[Kinetic Charge: 60%]

The freezing counter-pulse erupted from his heart, surging out into his capillaries like liquid nitrogen. The melting flesh on his chest stopped dissolving. The raw, bleeding tissue rapidly knitted together, forming dense, reinforced layers of silver-sheened dermal armor that actively repelled the liquid bile dripping off him.

The drones stopped their firing, their translucent eyes glowing with alien confusion as the human steam cloud parted to reveal Leo rising back up to his full height.

He wiped a glob of sizzling acid off his eye with the back of his hand. His chest was covered in fresh, metallic-hued scars, but his posture was terrifyingly rigid.

"My turn," Leo growled.

He lunged forward. His Agility, now boosted far beyond normal C-rank limits, turned him into a dark blur across the cavern floor.

He closed the distance to the nearest cluster of drones in a heartbeat. He didn't even use his gauntlets' special abilities; he simply swung his fists with raw, converted Strength. His black void-metal knuckles smashed through chitinous armor, tearing through drone heads and shattering their torsos into green slime.

CRACK! CRACK! BOOM!

He moved through the swarm like a machine built for slaughter. Every time a drone managed to nip his legs or spray a desperate stream of bile at his back, the minor sting merely fueled his stat counters, adding point after point to his growing foundation.

[Target Neutralized: Acid-Spitter Drone x14]

[Strength: 82]

[Endurance: 98]

In less than three minutes, the tunnel floor was littered with the shattered, twitching remains of thirty drones. Green, acidic blood pooled around Leo’s bare feet, but his newly altered skin barely registered the sizzle anymore.

THUMP.

The entire underground chamber shuddered. A heavy, rhythmic vibration rippled through the calcified floor, dislodging long, razor-sharp resin stalactites from above.

The far wall of the cavern—a massive, sixty-foot structure of hardened resin—shattered outward in a spray of razor-sharp shards.

Out from the darkness crawled the sovereign of the hive.

[WARNING: Boss Entity Engaged!]

[Target Identified: Acid Hive Queen (Rank-D Peak / Near C-Rank Threshold)]

[Special Trait: Corrosive Aura (Inflicts 50 DPS to surrounding melee combatants)]

[Special Trait: Hardened Chitin Shell (Immune to basic physical attacks below 70 Strength)]

The Queen was gargantuan. She measured over forty feet from her dripping, needle-lined mandibles to her bloated, pulsating egg sac. Her body was clad in pitch-black, obsidian-hard chitin that gleamed under the bioluminescent light, and eight multi-jointed legs tipped with six-foot spear-like talons scraped against the stone.

She opened her massive jaws, revealing rows of translucent, rotating teeth, and let out a ear-splitting, supersonic screech that shattered every piece of calcified resin in the room.

The acoustic shockwave hit Leo like a physical hammer, driving him back three paces as his ears bled from the sheer sound pressure.

[Damage Sustained: Acoustic Shock & Internal Ear Drum Trauma.]

[Pain Converted!]

[Endurance +3]

[Kinetic Charge: 75%]

Before Leo could regain his footing, the Queen lashed out with one of her front spear-talons. The heavy black leg blurred through the air, impaling Leo clean through his left shoulder and pinning him directly against the rear concrete wall of the cavern.

CRACK-SPLINT!

The stone behind him spider-webbed under the sheer impact. Blood—bright red and hot—spurted from the puncture wound in his shoulder, trickling down the Queen's obsidian leg.

The Queen chattered triumphantly, opening her main maw wide as a massive ball of concentrated, white-hot plasma-acid began to build in the back of her throat—a blast designed to liquidate him completely while he was pinned.

Leo hung from the wall, pinned by a six-foot spike through his collarbone. The pain was astronomical, an agonizing fire that threatened to plunge his consciousness into total darkness.

Instead, a wild, jagged grin tore across his face. He spat a mouthful of blood straight onto the Queen’s leg.

"You really think... pinning me... is a good idea?" Leo choked out, his voice laced with dark, manic amusement.

[CRITICAL DAMAGE SUSTAINED: Severe Penetrating Trauma & Bone Fracture.]

[Pain Converted!]

[Strength +8]

[Endurance +12]

[Kinetic Charge: 100% (OVERCHARGED CAPACITY REACHED)]

[Endurance Has Reached 113! (Surpasses Standard B-Rank Barrier)]

[Unlocking Special Passive: Ironclad Will (Physical Pain threshold converted into raw attack speed)]

The icy wave of System energy didn't just knit his bone; it locked his shoulder muscles around the Queen's spear-talon like an iron vise. The Queen tried to yank her leg back to set up her acid blast, but her massive limb wouldn't budge. The human on the wall had clamped onto her spear with his bare flesh and bone.

Leo reached up with his right arm. The Void-Infused Kinetic Gauntlet on his hand roared to life, glowing with an incandescent, blinding crimson-and-black aura that turned the surrounding air into a distorting heat haze.

"You had your turn," Leo growled, his eyes flashing with lethal red light.

He reached over and grabbed the Queen's spear-leg with his left hand, using his own pinned body as leverage. With a terrifying roar of converted strength, he pulled himself deeper along the spear, closing the distance to her head while the blade tore wider through his shoulder.

The Queen’s eyes widened in raw, instinctual terror as the human slid up her own weapon toward her face.

Leo drew back his glowing right fist.

"Now take mine!"

[Release Void Kinetic Overdrive!]

He drove his fist straight into the center of the Queen’s face, right between her cluster of black eyes.

EXPLOSION!

The stored kinetic force of an entire swarm's worth of acid attacks and a boss-tier impalement detonated simultaneously. The shockwave didn't just crack her chitin—it shattered her entire skull into a spray of black armor and dark fluid. The compressed void energy blasted straight through her massive body, tearing along her spine and detonating her rear egg sac in a catastrophic chain reaction of physical force.

The Queen’s forty-foot frame collapsed like a fallen building, slamming into the ground with a deafening crash that shook the entire sewer sector. Her remaining legs twitched once, twice, and then went permanently limp.

The spear-talon in Leo's shoulder turned to dark smoke, dissolving along with the rest of the boss's corpse.

Leo dropped six feet to the wet resin floor, landing cleanly on his boots. He staggered slightly as the hole in his left shoulder began to rapidly close up, the silver-sheened scar tissue sealing the wound in seconds under the influence of his newly boosted Endurance.

Silence fell over the deep cavern, broken only by the steady, mechanical chime ringing inside his mind.

[Boss Entity Neutralized: Acid Hive Queen]

Leo stood in the quiet darkness, wiping blood and ash from his bare, scar-covered chest. He looked down at his hands—his black gauntlets were completely unblemished, pulsing with a steady, lethal hum.

He had walked into the sewer as an F-rank throwaway that the world expected to die in painful obscurity. Now, his raw physical attributes surpassed those of the elite squad leaders in the Iron Vanguard Guild.

Leo turned back toward the exit ladder, pulling a spare black shirt from his canvas bag as he walked through the shattered remains of the hive.

"Twenty thousand credits..." Leo muttered, a cold, dark smile playing on his lips. "And another step toward Marcus."

  • Chapter 35: The Fall of the Valerius Syndicate

The silence hanging over the Grand Assembly Plaza was absolute, heavy enough to drown out the distant, frantic sirens wailing across the lower districts. The air smelled of burnt ozone, pulverized white marble, and the metallic tang of crushed void-crystals. High above, the shattered dome of the central terrace frame groaned under the structural displacement caused by Leo’s single step, sending small showers of white dust fluttering down like ash.Duke Valerius clung to the carved stone balustrade, his breath coming in ragged, shallow hitches. His grey eyes, usually calculating and cold, darted wildly across the courtyard. He looked at the paladins of the High Vanguard—men he had spent millions of gold coins arming with the finest dwarven steel and enchanted barrier shields. They stood frozen, their shields locked in a defensive tortoise wall, but their knees were visibly trembling beneath their heavy plate armor. They were not looking at Valerius for orders. Their eyes were fixed

The trembling of the Grand Assembly Plaza did not stop. It settled into a low, terrifying harmonic frequency that hummed through the soles of every noble, paladin, and magistrate present.Duke Valerius gripped the balcony railing, his knuckles turning chalk-white. "Insolence!" he barked, his voice straining to cover the pitch of panic rising in his chest. "You survive a suicide breach through pure, unvetted dark anomaly, and you return to threaten the High Council? Guards! Detain Class Zero immediately under the Citadel Sedition Act!"Not a single paladin moved. The heavy-armored vanguard line stood frozen, their shields locked, their eyes darting nervously between their captain and the bare-chested figure in the crater. They were veterans of the Upper Breaches, but the instinct ingrained deep in their bones shouted a single, universal warning: To step toward that man is to step into a grinding wheel."Sedition?" Leo muttered, taking another slow, heavy step forward.BOOM.The

The sky above the Sky Citadel was no longer clear. The colossal pillar of pitch-black void energy that had punched straight up through ten floors of the Abyss had torn a two-hundred-foot hole clean through the center of the Grand Assembly Plaza. Sunlight streamed through the smoking shaft, illuminating a swirling cloud of pulverized quartz, calcified dust, and purified mana mist that rained down over the floating island like silver snow.Emergency sirens blared across all four districts.Paladins of the High Vanguard lined the perimeter of the smoking crater, their heavy shields locked, their enchanted spears raised in terrified anticipation. High above on the central terrace, the members of the High Council stood in frantic clusters, their scrying slates flashing red with catastrophic energy readings."The breach core..." a Council Magistrate stammered, his hands shaking as he stared at his slate. "The core of Floor 10... it didn't just stabilize. The energy signature of the Wor
