Chapter 6: The Unbroken Shadow

​The air in the long, ascending tunnel shifted from suffocating sulfur to the crisp, damp chill of subterranean stone. Every step Leo took left a faint imprint of blood and ash on the cold steps, but his gait was no longer that of a dying F-rank scavenger. It was steady, heavy, and lethal.

​With every breath, his freshly altered body knit torn muscle fiber together, turning raw suffering into physical density. His Endurance had shattered normal human boundaries, turning his skin into a thick barrier capable of withstanding blows that would crush an ordinary man’s skull.

​At the top of the staircase, the tunnel broadened into a cavernous vault of ancient, crumbling ruins—a section of the Obsidian Caverns completely omitted from the guild’s mapping charts. In the center of the dark hall sat a massive chest constructed of black iron and bound by heavy rune-engraved chains. Beside it lay the shattered skeletal remains of an ancient hunter, still clutching a worn leather journal.

​Leo approached the chest, his kinetic gauntlets humming faintly in the dim light.

​Without hesitation, he slammed both gauntlet-clad hands directly onto the rune seal.

​Instantly, black, tendril-like lightning erupted from the iron chest, coiling around Leo's forearms and surging straight into his chest. The void corruption burned like liquid ice, freezing his veins while scorching his nervous system with agonizing hallucinations of his past failures—the mocking laughter of the guild, Marcus’s smug smile, Elena’s cold indifference.

​AAGH!

​Leo fell to one knee, the black lightning tearing through his skin, blackening his veins as the corruption attempted to shatter his mind.

With a roar of raw, converted strength, he tore the heavy iron chains clean off the chest, shattering the ancient runes into harmless sparks.

​The iron chest popped open. Floating inside was a glowing, obsidian-hued orb—the second Portal Key Fragment—alongside a dark red, liquid-like metal core that immediately trickled toward his gauntlets.

​The metal on his forearms shifted into a sleek, pitch-black armor plate that absorbed the surrounding light, the knuckle spikes elongating into lethal, razor-sharp talons.

​Leo pocketed the assembled exit rune. He turned toward the reinforced stone doorway at the end of the vault—the hatch that led directly to the surface, just outside the Iron Vanguard Guild's perimeter outpost.
