The message remained on the console.

[NEXT OBSERVATION: THE PLACE WHERE THE FIRST FREE WITNESS WAS BORN.]

Ethan stared at the words.

“I was born in Nigeria.”

The stranger shook his head.

“It's not referring to your physical birth.”

“Then what is it referring to?”

“I don't know. But look at the coordinates.”

A map appeared beneath the message. The location was far from the underground facility, hidden beneath a region marked as an abandoned research zone.

The First King approached the screen.

The floor split open.A deep vibration rolled through the chamber, forcing everyone to step back. Beneath the cracks, a pale golden light pulsed like something enormous was breathing. The shadow stood frozen.Ethan looked at it.“You know what that voice is?”The shadow didn't answer.E-00 moved closer, his face unusually pale.“It isn't a voice. It's a command.”The First Law examined the symbols spreading across the walls.“This authority is older than the foundation. It is attempting to override every system beneath us.”The First King tightened his grip on his weapon.“Then we stop it.”“You cannot,” E-00 replied. The king turned.“Explain.”“The command doesn't control the foundation. It controls the separation itself. Every identity that emerged from the original consciousness is connected to it.”Ethan looked toward the shadow.“So it can pull everyone back?”“If it completes the process.”The stranger glanced at the staircase.“Then we need to leave.”A metallic voice answered

“Please. I don't want to be alone anymore.”The words remained between Ethan and the shadow. For several seconds, nobody spoke.Ash tightened his grip around Ethan's wrist.“Don't let those words distract you. It could be another trick.”“I know.”But Ethan didn't look away. The shadow had spent countless years watching identities emerge, change, and disappear. It had seen fragments become people, experiments become independent beings, and possibilities turn into lives.Yet it had never experienced any of those things for itself.“You said you were left behind,” Ethan said. “Who made that decision?”The shadow's outline flickered.“The first consciousness.”“Did it tell you to stay?”“No.”“Did it ask you to follow?”Silence.Ethan took a careful breath.“Then how do you know you were abandoned?”The chamber shook.A crack spread across the floor, separating Ethan from E-00.The First Law struggled to contain the energy.“Stop questioning it! The connection is destabilizing!”The shad

Ethan turned. His shadow was standing behind him.It had the same shape as his body, but its edges were twisted, stretching across the floor like dark smoke. It had no face, yet Ethan could feel its attention fixed on him.Ash moved between them.“Stay back.”The shadow tilted its head. Then it spoke.“You always do that.”Ash's ears flattened.“Do what?”“Stand between him and everything he doesn't understand.”“Someone has to.”The shadow laughed. It sounded exactly like Ethan.E-00 stepped through the doorway, his expression tense.“Don't let it touch you.”Ethan glanced at him.“You said you thought you destroyed it. What is it?”E-00 looked at the shadow.“The original consciousness.”Silence fell. The First King lowered his weapon.“That is impossible. The original consciousness was divided into fragments before the reconstruction experiments.”“That's what I believed,” E-00 replied. “But I was wrong.”The shadow moved.Every light in the chamber went out. When the silver glow r

  • Chapter 82 – The Voice That Wasn't His

Ethan couldn't move. The voice had come from his own mouth. He had heard it. Everyone had.Yet his lips hadn't moved.Ash stepped in front of him, silver fur bristling.“Whatever you are, get away from him.”The figure beyond the doorway smiled.“Still protecting him. How predictable.”“I'm not interested in your opinion.”“Your loyalty is admirable, Ancient Wolf King. But you are protecting an identity that was never meant to survive.”Ash bared his teeth.“Try saying that closer.”“Enough!” Ethan snapped. The figure's attention returned to him.“Do you recognize me now?”“No.”“Look again.”The black sky behind the figure shifted. Countless versions of Ethan moved through it, each surrounded by fragments of different memories. One wore the golden armor of the First King.Another stood beside Ash.A third was surrounded by flames. And one sat alone in a white room, staring at a blank wall.Ethan felt something stir in his mind. Not a memory.A sensation. The feeling of being watched

  • Chapter 81 – The Face Beneath the Foundation

Nobody moved. The staircase had appeared where the floor had been solid moments earlier. Seven silver lines ran along its edges, leading into a darkness that swallowed the golden light from the chamber.Ethan looked at the message again.DO NOT LET IT SEE YOUR FACE.“What exactly is down there?” he asked.E-00's voice crackled through the console.“I don't know what it has become.”The First King stepped forward. “You said you discovered the inner chamber.”“I did. But I never entered it completely.”“Why?”“Because something inside recognized me.”Ethan glanced at the staircase.“Recognized you as what?”There was a pause.“As its creator.”The First Law's golden spark flickered.“That is impossible. The First Origin created the original observation structure.”“Not this part,” E-00 replied. “The inner chamber was already there before the Witness Engine. Before the First Origin's experiment. It was hidden beneath everything.”The little golden guardian moved closer to Ethan's shoulde

  • Chapter 80 – The Right to Exist

Ethan stared at the figure inside the Witness Engine.[INDEPENDENT CHOICE REQUIRED.]The message continued flashing across the console. The First Law approached him.“Do not answer yet. The Engine is attempting to make you responsible for deciding whether this identity deserves to exist.”The figure tilted its head.“Is that unreasonable? You have spent your entire journey defending the right of others to choose. Surely you can decide whether I deserve the same right.”Ethan frowned.“You're asking me to judge you before you've even made a choice of your own.”“I have made choices.”“Such as?”The figure hesitated.“I have preserved observations. I have prevented information from being lost.”“Those are functions, not necessarily choices.”The figure's expression hardened.“You are splitting hairs.”“No. I'm trying to understand you.”Ash remained beside Ethan, watching the black threads surrounding the console.“Understand it quickly. The machine is still doing something unpleasant.”
