Chapter 1

"I can’t believe you would do this to me, Lisa."

Ray’s voice shook as he stood at the bedroom door, his hand still gripping the knob. His heart pounded so loudly he could hear it echo in his ears.

On the king-sized bed, wrapped in silk sheets, was Lisa his wife. Her hair was messy, her lips swollen red, her skin glowing from the touch of another man. And beside her was Oscar Levine, his shirt unbuttoned, his smirk wide and arrogant as if the entire house belonged to him.

Lisa gasped, startled for a brief second. But the shock faded almost instantly. Instead of guilt, her eyes turned cold, sharp, and unrepentant. She tightened the sheet around her body and glared at Ray.

"You weren’t supposed to be home tonight," she said flatly, as if he had interrupted a business meeting.

Oscar chuckled, his voice dripping with mockery. "Ray, buddy. You should’ve knocked. Privacy, you know?"

Ray’s throat was dry. He felt like he was choking in the air around him. The weight of betrayal crushed down on his chest. His wife, the woman he had defended countless times, the woman he believed was his partner for life, was standing before him as nothing but a stranger.

"After everything I gave you, Lisa?" His voice broke, almost a whisper. "My heart, my trust, my life.... this is what you do?"

Lisa rolled her eyes as if his pain was nothing. "Don’t act surprised. Don’t make this dramatic. This marriage was never about love. You knew that."

Ray stared at her, blinking fast, as though he hadn’t heard her right. "What?"

"It was business," Lisa continued coldly. "You were useful. But times change. Oscar is the man I need now. He knows how to win. He has power. You? You’re soft, Ray. Too soft."

Oscar climbed out of bed, buttoning his shirt lazily. He smirked as he walked a step closer. "She deserves better, Ray. You’ve been dragging her down. I’ll take good care of her. Don’t worry."

Ray’s fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. Rage boiled inside him, but the betrayal hurt even more. His eyes glowed with unshed tears.

He turned back to Lisa. "So that’s it? Everything we shared? The years together? Our daughter? It meant nothing?"

Her lip curled into a mocking smile. "You’re acting like a fool. Our daughter will be fine. What matters is the future. And my future isn’t with you."

Ray’s body shook with anger and heartbreak. He felt as though the ground beneath him was crumbling.

And then, the sound that broke him completely came.

"Daddy?"

At the doorway stood Aurora, their daughter. 7 years old, hair tousled from sleep, her small arms hugging her stuffed rabbit. Her wide innocent eyes darted between her father, her mother, and the stranger standing beside the bed.

Ray’s knees weakened instantly. His little girl. His reason for living.

He dropped to his knees, tears welling in his eyes. "Aurora.... sweetheart...."

But Lisa moved fast, snatching the girl into her arms. "Go back to bed, Aurora!" she snapped, her voice sharp and impatient.

Aurora whimpered, her eyes filling with tears. "Daddy, what's happening?"

Ray reached out a trembling hand, but Lisa slapped it away. "Don’t you dare touch her," she hissed.

Ray’s heart shattered. His chest felt like it was being ripped open.

Lisa’s tone turned venomous. "You don’t get to play the victim here, Ray. Not in my house. Not in my life."

He staggered to his feet, his voice low and raw. "This isn’t just your house. It’s our home. And she is our daughter"

Lisa’s glare deepened. "No. She’s mine. You’re nothing, Ray. You’ve always been nothing."

Her words hit him like a thousand tiny knives.

Lisa snapped her fingers.

And heavy boots pounded against the marble floor. Two large guards stormed in, broad-shouldered and expressionless. They stopped at Lisa’s side, waiting for her command.

Ray’s breathing quickened, but he stood tall, his eyes fixed on Lisa. His voice trembled, but there was fire in it. "You’ll regret this, Lisa. You’ll regret everything you’ve done tonight."

Lisa smirked and folded her arms. "Take him away."

The guards seized Ray by his arms, yanking him backward. He fought, but their grip was hard. Aurora screamed, kicking against her mother’s grip.

"Daddy! Daddy, don’t go!"

Her cries cut through him deeper than any blade. His heart broke again and again with every sound.

"Lisa!" he shouted, struggling against the guards. "Don’t do this in front of her! Don’t destroy her like this!"

Lisa dragged Aurora closer, her face cold. "Shut him up and get him out of my sight."

One guard shoved Ray against the wall, knocking the air from his lungs. Another twisted his arm behind his back until pain shot up his shoulder.

"Sign these first." Lisa’s voice was sharp. She grabbed a folder from the dresser and tossed it onto the glass table nearby. The sound echoed like a hammer hitting steel.

Ray’s eyes fell on the folder. Divorce papers. Already prepared. Already waiting.

His knees almost gave out again. "So this was your plan all along."

Lisa’s lips curled into a cruel smile. "Of course. You’ve been nothing but a liability. Now sign it and get out of my life."

The guards shoved him forward until he was standing at the table. His vision blurred with rage and heartbreak. His hand trembled as he stared down at the papers.

He thought of Aurora, her tears, her cries. He thought of the years he had given Lisa, the sacrifices, the loyalty. And this was how she ended it.

Slowly, with hands shaking, he picked up the pen.

Oscar laughed behind him. "Be smart, Ray. Don’t drag this out."

Lisa’s eyes gleamed with victory.

The pen scratched across the page.

When he was done, he dropped the pen with a heavy thud. His eyes locked on Lisa, filled with fire. "You have no idea what you’ve just done. You’ll regret this. I promise you."

For the first time, Lisa’s confident smile flickered, but only for a second. She waved her hand. "Throw him out."

The guards dragged him down the grand staircase, his feet scraping against the polished floor. Aurora’s screams echoed from the hallway, piercing through the night.

"Daddy! Daddy!"

Her voice was the last thing he heard before the heavy doors slammed shut.

The guards pulled him outside and threw him onto the pavement. Then the beating began.

Fists. Boots. Each blow landed like a hammer. His ribs cracked, his lip split. He gasped for air, but they gave him none. Pain shot through every part of his body.

One guard spat on him. "You should’ve known your place."

They kicked him one last time, then turned and walked back to the mansion.

Ray lay broken on the ground, his blood staining the pavement, his breath shallow and ragged. His vision blurred, his body numb. He could barely move.

But deep inside, beneath the pain, something burned. Anger. Fire. A vow.

He would not die here. He could not die here. He had a daughter to protect. He had a promise to keep.

The night was silent except for the sound of his labored breathing. Then, suddenly, headlights.

A sleek black Range Rover pulled to a stop beside his body. The door opened with a soft click, and two men stepped out, their polished shoes shining under the streetlight.

One crouched beside him, checking his pulse. "He’s alive." He yelled.

The other straightened, his presence commanding. "Get him into the car. Now!"

Ray’s swollen eyes flickered open. Blood blurred his vision, but he could still make out the symbol embossed on the man’s cuff, discreet, golden, impossible to mistake.

For the first time since the beating began, a weak smile tugged at his lips.

"They still think I’m nothing," he whispered, voice hoarse.

The man met his gaze, a knowing look in his eyes.

"They’ll find out soon enough, Sir."

Ray’s vision dimmed, his body giving way to darkness. But deep in his chest, through the pain and betrayal, burned a single thought.

They think they destroyed me. They have no idea who I really am.
