Ethan stared at the text for a long time before responding.

Does that mean you're ready to hear whose handwriting it was, or do you want to pretend you haven't already guessed?

He sent three texts, each one different, before hitting delete on all of them. He finally sent a reply of four words: Tomorrow. Not tonight. He was disappointed in the cowardice of it, but he had spent the morning carefully balancing the entire staff of a company that wasn't his own, and he had little to spare for whatever Marcus was about to throw at him.

Isabella texted him twenty minutes later. Thank you. For today. I mean it.

He read it three times before allowing himself to smile.

They fell into something, over the following days, that neither of them named. She texted him things unrelated to the engagement, a picture of a dog she'd seen on her walk, a rant about her assistant's coffee order, a one-sentence story about a board member's tie that had somehow made him laugh out loud in an empty apartment. He found himself checking his phone in ways he hadn't done since before Serena, and hated himself for it, and did it anyway.

They had dinner Wednesday, for no particular reason other than that it was Wednesday. There were no cameras waiting to capture the moment, no father across from them measuring him up, just a dinner two blocks from Veyron with vinyl booths and coffee that Isabella insisted was the best in the city and Ethan had to disagree with quietly, in his own heart.

"You're lying about the coffee," he said.

"I am not," Isabella said. "An acquired taste."

"That's what people say about things that are objectively bad."

"You don't know anything about coffee," She stole a fry from his plate, a habit that had somehow formed since he'd last been here, and he was no longer bothered by it at all. "You probably drink whatever's cheapest and call it a special blend."

"I drink whatever's closest." The words came out before he could stop them. "That's not a special blend."

"That tracks," She studied him across the table, something softer in her expression than he'd ever seen in the boardroom. "You know, for a man who's supposedly hiding something tremendous from me, you're remarkably easy to sit across from."

"Are you saying that's a compliment?" Ethan asked, leaning forward and tucking a strand of her hair back behind her ear before he could stop himself. She didn't move away from him, didn't pull his hand back, and for a moment he forgot to breathe. This wasn't part of the plan, not at all, but he wasn't sure he wanted to reconsider it entirely.

"This isn't part of the deal," she said quietly.

"I know."

"I should probably mind that it isn't."

"Do you?"

She didn't answer, which was its own kind of answer, and he pulled his hand back before either of them had to decide what came next. They finished dinner talking about nothing important, and when he dropped her off that night, she lingered at her door a beat too long before saying goodnight, like she was waiting to see if he'd close the distance and disappointed, faintly, when he didn't.

He told himself it was for the plan. He knew, as he drove back home that night, that it hadn't been entirely for the plan at all.

Adrian, Isabella's cousin has been watching him closely since after the family dinner.

He didn't confront Ethan about it, not that he would have, Adrian had never been a fan of confrontation personally, and he would have been the first to tell you so if anyone had asked. What he did, that Thursday, was spend several hours alone in his office long after his assistant had left for the night, sifting through vague things a receipt from the dinner he'd sent his contact at the valet stand the other week, a reservation at a restaurant under someone else' name, a driver who kept circling the same house at odd hours of the night. None of it together meant much, and none of it would be enough to confirm anything. It wasn't until he was staring at the Aurelius Global filing, the one hidden behind four other companies, and stared at the single surname sitting in it like it might rearrange itself into an answer if he looked long enough

He smiled to himself as he sent a text to the private investigator he hired occasionally for issues that required more patience than resources. Full workup on Ethan Vale. Financials, family, everything prior to the last five years. Don't care how much it costs. And say nothing of it to anyone.

Not that anyone would know about it in the first place, not if he had anything to say about it. He didn't tell Isabella about it either, because a warning would have made her careful, and carefulness had a way of turning into something else entirely in his cousin. He preferred to see the engagement play out, and be waiting when the time came, when he'd already gathered enough to remind her what he was capable of.

He smiled again, this time to himself, as he stood in his empty office, already three moves ahead of a man who wouldn't know what had happened until it was too late.

Ethan had no idea what was happening. He was outside the Veyron building that same evening, waiting patiently on the curb for Isabella to finish her call, when she finally pushed through the doors and met him there, phone in hand and eyes sharp with something other than her usual irritation with her cousin.

"That was legal," she said, voice tight. "Blackridge just filed a motion with the SEC. They're alleging that Veyron misrepresented the Kessler renewal terms to the shareholders. It's all baseless information, of course, the renewal was clean, we have the paperwork to prove it,

but it doesn't matter if it's all true or not. It triggers the disclosure freeze on all announcements. Meaning I can't announce new financing, new partnerships, anything at all that might reassure the board, until the SEC clears the allegations. Which could take weeks. Which is plenty of time for Blackridge to push through their confidence vote while I'm sitting here, completely helpless."

"Then we don't play their game."

"There isn't another game, Ethan," Isabella said, jaw clenched. "That's the entire point. They aren't trying to win by my rules, They're trying to take everything I have.

He's fighting me on the one where the rules themselves are the weapon

She turned to him, eyes dark with something he had no name for. "I'm out of moves, Ethan."

Ethan thought of Aurelius, of the things he could do if he stopped pretending he was someone he wasn't, if he stopped hiding behind his father's shadow. He thought of his father, of a man who had built an empire in the same way he was doing it now, and died before he could say it all out loud.

"I might have one," he said.

She turned to him, eyes sharp. "What kind of move?"

He hesitated, on the edge of something that could change everything, and told himself, quite firmly, that it wasn't the right time.

Isabella wanted him to stay home."You showing up looks defensive," she said, pacing her office at seven in the morning while her coffee grew cold on the desk and she waited. "It shows that you have something to hide.""I do have something to hide." Staying home looks worse. It looks like I'm afraid of the question.”He said it evenly, simply, the way most people did when they had taken the time to decide what they were and not likely to waver from it because he had already decided, mostly in spite of himself, that what Adrian had wasn't enough. A man with actual proof wouldn't have asked for the floor. He would've come into the room and taken his place with ease. Adrian asking for the floor meant that Adrian, despite having been here for weeks, still had a theory but it was not yet an answer, and theories survived in rooms heavy with skepticism if the accused didn't take exception to the accusations themselves. The fourteenth floor had a colder presence than was strictly necessary, a

Ethan called Marcus back within the minute."Tell me he's okay.""He's fine. Shaken, but he's fine. He wasn't even there when it happened." Marcus sounded, if anything, more detached than usual, almost as if he were forcing himself to calm down. "Whoever did it knew precisely what they wanted. Didn't touch his computer, anything with value. Just the physical copies on the Veyron brief. In and out in under six minutes according to the building's security log, which, conveniently, has a gap in exactly that window.""Someone who has access to the cameras.""Someone that has access to very good things, apparently." He exhaled. "Ethan, this isn't Adrian's approach. Adrian operates under a low profile. This person was looking for an answer here tonight and never stopped to consider if anyone might catch them kick the front door open.""Victor.""That's my assumption as well." A paused. "Which means he's not just curious about the situation anymore. He's worried. Curious men wait. Worrying m

"Nothing," Ethan said. "I'll think of something."It wasn't nothing. It was a whole, honest truth, sitting warm and round against his tongue, waiting to be spat out, but he had swallowed it all the same, the same way he had swallowed it when he stood at his mother's kitchen table, and the same way he had swallowed it across his coffee cup from Isabella's father, the roomful of spectators all too familiar. Some habits didn't care how much they cost you. They just kept working.Isabella regarded him a second too long, as if she heard the slippage, the shift between everything he said and what he needed unspoken, but a board vote in three days did not account for the time it took to repair the damage. She squeezed her arm, distracted, already turning towards the thing in her day awaiting her decision, and Ethan watched her go and hated how easy it would be if he only let it.He went home and placed yet another call."Marcus. I need Whitlock."A pause on the line, the length of which sugg

Marcus's message went unreturned until midnight because Ethan didn't trust himself to write back anything shorter than a full conversation, and he felt the long conversation with an entire table of Laurents was not the appropriate time to do that.He read it four more times on the drive home. I know whose handwriting matches it instead. He didn't call. He needed time to be himself before he let himself be a dead man's son.The day that he learned began when his phone rang at six in the morning, Isabella's name on the line, no morning wishes attached."I need you at the office.""It's six a.m.""I know what time it is." Her voice carried the particular tightness of someone who should have been already up. "Kessler Manufacturing pulled their contract renewal overnight. Forty percent of our remaining supply chain comes through them. If the contract fails us, the board doesn't wait for the quarter end. They'll vote Blackridge in by Thursday.""Why call me.""Because you said whatever's ne

The gate opened before Ethan finished giving his name, which meant someone had been watching for his car since he turned onto the street.Isabella stood in wait in her dark green dress, and for a while neither of them spoke."You look as if you're about to enter a deposition," she noted finally."Feel about right.""My father will ask what you do. Say investment consulting and let him assume it's a small firm. He loses interest quickly once he thinks there isn't a serious amount of money involved." she told quickly, quietly, as if it had been rehearsed in a mirror somewhere and she had trouble convincing herself it would do any good. "Do not correct him. Whatever he says tonight.""I wasn't going to.""I mean it. Whatever he says."Already seated as they entered the room, her father was handsome in his way but the charm had curdled slightly over the years into something colder; he did not rise to meet them but offered his hand across the table, a small test of who was going to have to
