Chapter 1

The restaurant was too expensive for what Serena Whitmore was about to say, but she'd chosen it herself, so Ethan Vale supposed she wanted the marble floors and hovering waiters as a backdrop for it.

"I'm marrying Kent," she said, before the appetizers even arrived. No preamble. She said it the way she'd once told him she wanted the corner booth instead of the window table, like it cost her nothing.

Three years. Ethan set his water glass down slowly enough that his hand didn't shake. "Kent Whitfield."

"His family owns most of Orange County, Ethan. He offered me a seat on his investment board this morning. A seat, not a job title someone hands you to be polite." She said it evenly, like she was reading numbers off a spreadsheet. Money. Status. The words she used instead of love, and she'd never bothered pretending otherwise.

Her eyes moved over him, the plain gray sweater, the watch on his wrist that had cost him eighty dollars two Christmases ago. "You're still wearing that." She almost laughed. "I gave you a Patek Philippe, Ethan. Forty thousand dollars, and you're out here looking like you shop at a gas station."

"I liked the plain one better."

"That's exactly the problem with you." She stood, smoothing her dress, already somewhere else in her head. "You'll always be comfortable being nobody."

He didn't reach for her hand. Didn't ask her to sit back down, didn't say any of the things a man was supposed to say when the last three years of his life stood up and reached for her coat. He just watched her walk out, and something in his chest that should have broken simply went quiet instead.

Marcus was already at the bar when Ethan got there, two drinks deep and mid-rant about a client before he even registered Ethan's face.

"She's marrying Kent Whitfield," Ethan said, sitting down.

Marcus set his glass down hard enough to slosh. "The engagement's over? Ethan—"

"I'm fine." He wasn't asking for sympathy, and Marcus, to his credit, didn't force it on him. Instead his friend studied him a beat longer, then let it go, because that was what twenty years of friendship bought you: the right to know when pushing wouldn't help.

"Fine. Then let's talk about something that actually matters." Marcus pulled up something on his phone. "Veyron Technologies. Blackridge Holdings has been circling them for months, trying to force an acquisition. The acting CEO's refused every offer."

"Who's running it?"

"Isabella Laurent. Founder's daughter. Word is Blackridge keeps sweetening the offer and she keeps telling them where to put it." Marcus slid the phone across. A photo of a woman at a podium, composed, unflinching, cameras aimed at her like weapons she wasn't afraid of. "There's a clip of her at a press conference. Says she'll burn the company to the ground before she sells it to the people who helped destroy it in the first place."

Something in Ethan went very still. Blackridge Holdings. He'd heard that name before, buried in files he'd spent twelve years collecting in the dark, ever since the night his father lost everything and nobody would tell him why. He'd never had proof. Just instinct, and a folder that kept growing.

"Send me everything you have on Blackridge," he said.

Marcus looked at him for a long moment. "You think it's connected."

"I think I want to know."

He told himself he was only walking past Veyron's building out of curiosity. Then he heard a woman's voice, sharp with restrained anger, and turned the corner to find Isabella Laurent backed against the wall by a man twice her size, his hand braced against the brick beside her head.

"Get your hand off the wall," Ethan said, "before I move it for you."

The man turned, sized him up, and apparently didn't like what he found, because he muttered something and walked off without further argument. Isabella straightened her blazer, more annoyed than shaken.

"I had it handled."

"Sure looked like it."

Up close she was sharper than her photo, tired around the eyes in a way the cameras hadn't caught. Her phone buzzed. She read the message and her face changed, just slightly, the composure cracking at the edge.

"The financing fell through," she said, mostly to herself. "The emergency round. Gone."

"That's bad."

"That's catastrophic." She looked at him properly then, like she was reconsidering something. "You're not scared of anything, are you."

"Not particularly."

"I need a favor. A strange one." She hesitated, and for a woman who'd just told a room full of reporters she'd burn her company down before surrendering it, the hesitation was its own kind of confession. "My family's forcing a marriage on me to save the company politically. I need a fiancé. Just for show. I'll pay you."

"No."

"I haven't told you the number."

"Doesn't matter." He said it simply, no performance in it, and that seemed to unsettle her more than if he'd shouted.

Across town, Marcus stared at his laptop screen until the numbers stopped making sense, then started making sense in an entirely different, worse way.

Blackridge's shell company. An offshore account in the Caymans. The same account, the same routing number, that had surfaced twelve years ago in the wreckage of Ethan's father's company, back when Marcus had been young enough to think grief had an expiration date.

He picked up his phone.

Ethan, walking away from a woman who'd just tried to buy his silence with money he didn't want, felt his own phone buzz in his pocket. He didn't know yet what Marcus had found. But standing there, still turning Isabella Laurent's refusal over in his mind, he already suspected her enemy and his might be wearing two different names for the same face. For the first time since Serena walked out, something in him finally felt like it had a direction again.
