By noon, Ethan had moved from being a fired employee to the owner of a profitable operation worth more than he had possessed in months. Yet he had barely celebrated before the threat from Blackstone changed the meaning of his victory.

Daniel had spent the morning tracing the dead company behind the threatening number. Its name was Meridian Holdings, a company registered six years earlier and dissolved exactly eleven months after Adrian Cole disappeared.

“There is almost nothing left,” Daniel said, sliding a tablet across the table. “The records were scrubbed.”

Ethan studied the screen. “Almost?”

“One transaction survived.”

A bank transfer appeared in the records. Meridian Holdings had received three million dollars from a private account belonging to Adrian Cole.

Victoria leaned closer. “Why would your father send money to a company that disappeared?”

“That is what we need to discover.”

Financial Insight activated automatically.

[Historical Financial Pattern Detected.]

[Transaction linked to Adrian Cole.]

[Probability of concealed purpose: 94.7%.]

[New clue available.]

A location appeared beneath the message.

Ethan recognized the address immediately.

“The old Blackstone office.”

Daniel nodded. “The same building we found yesterday.”

Victoria looked concerned. “If Blackstone knows you are investigating them, walking into their old office could be a trap.”

“It probably is.”

“Then why go?”

“Because they expect me to be afraid.”

Ethan stood and picked up his jacket. He had spent years allowing powerful people to decide what he could and could not do. That ended when the system awakened.

The old Blackstone office stood in a neglected commercial district on the eastern edge of the city. Its windows were dusty, its sign had been removed, and weeds covered part of the entrance.

Yet Ethan noticed something strange.

A security camera moved slightly above the doorway.

“Someone is maintaining this place,” he said.

Daniel checked his equipment. “I can disable the external cameras.”

“No. Leave them.”

Victoria frowned. “Why?”

“If they are watching, I want them to know I came.”

They entered through the main door.

Inside, the building looked abandoned, but Financial Insight immediately highlighted several electrical circuits still drawing power.

Ethan followed the strongest signal down a hallway and stopped before a steel door.

There was no handle.

Daniel examined the wall. “Electronic lock.”

Ethan placed his father’s watch near the panel.

The screen flashed.

[Legacy Security Interface Detected.]

[Bloodline authentication required.]

The lock opened.

Victoria stared at Ethan. “Your father built this?”

“I do not know.”

Beyond the door was a hidden operations room containing computers, filing cabinets, surveillance monitors, and a large city map covered with colored markings.

Daniel moved toward the computers.

“These systems are still active.”

Ethan approached the map.

Several locations were marked with black circles. Cole International was one of them. Grant Tower was another.

A third circle surrounded Ethan's childhood home.

Victoria noticed it too.

“Why would they monitor your house?”

Ethan had no answer.

Daniel suddenly called from the computer station.

“I found a file.”

Ethan hurried over.

The file was encrypted, but one line remained visible.

PROJECT ECHO — SUBJECT E.C.

Ethan felt the room grow colder.

“E.C.,” Victoria whispered. “Ethan Cole.”

Daniel tried opening the file.

Access denied.

Then another system window appeared.

[Unauthorized Access Detected.]

[Security Protocol Activated.]

[Three-minute purge initiated.]

Daniel immediately began copying the available data.

“Give me time.”

Ethan searched the room for anything that might identify Project Echo. He opened drawers, examined documents, and checked the cabinets. Most were empty.

Then he found a photograph.

It showed Adrian Cole standing beside two men.

One was Victor Hale.

The other man was someone Ethan had never seen before.

He was younger, sharply dressed, and wearing a silver ring marked with the same symbol engraved on Ethan’s watch.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten date.

“Twenty-four years ago.”

Ethan stared at the date.

That was the year he was born.

A sound came from the corridor.

Footsteps.

Daniel looked up. “We have company.”

The lights suddenly went out.

Emergency lighting activated, bathing the room in red.

Ethan's system displayed a warning.

[Host surrounded.]

[Enemy combatants detected: Seven.]

[Threat Level: Moderate.]

[Optional Challenge Available.]

[Defeat the attackers without revealing the Legacy Interface.]

[Reward: Basic Combat Training Level Two.]

Ethan tightened his grip.

The first door exploded inward.

A masked man rushed through.

Ethan moved before fear could slow him. He sidestepped the attack, redirected the man's momentum, and drove him into a desk.

Another attacker entered.

Ethan ducked beneath a strike and countered with a precise movement he had never consciously learned.

The system was guiding his body.

Within seconds, two attackers were down.

But the remaining five spread through the room.

One raised a weapon toward Victoria.

Ethan moved between them.

“Back away from her.”

The attacker hesitated.

Then a voice came through the darkness.

“Interesting.”

A tall man stepped into the red emergency light.

He removed his mask.

Ethan recognized him from the photograph.

The silver ring caught the light.

The man smiled.

“You finally found your father's room.”

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

“Who are you?”

The man looked at the watch.

“Ask your father.”

He pressed a button on his wrist.

The entire building began to shake.

Daniel shouted, “Ethan, we have to leave!”

The stranger turned toward the exit.

“Your father wanted you protected,” he said. “Unfortunately, protection was never going to last forever.”

Then he disappeared into the smoke.

The system flashed one final message.

[Critical Revelation Detected.]

[Project Echo connected to host's birth.]

[Memory Lock integrity: 7% remaining.]

For twenty-four years, Ethan had believed his past was an empty space created by abandonment. Now he understood that someone had deliberately buried pieces of it. The system was not simply making him stronger; it was uncovering a life he had been prevented from remembering.

Ethan stood frozen for only a moment.

His father had not merely disappeared.

He had hidden something inside Ethan.

And whatever Project Echo was, its secret had been waiting for twenty-four years.
