Six: The Secret System

“What are you waiting for? Pull the trigger.” Malik forced himself to say.

His neck was being choked by the vampire lady. She was going to bite him.

Nathan was behind them both, guns pointed to her back while his hands staggered.

“Don't be such a weakling. Plea...se.” Malik pleaded. He was dying.

Nathan closed his eyes and took a deep breath.

He shot twice, hitting her back with his bullet.

She collapsed on the floor.

The blue screen popped up above his head, revealing a message.

[No reward gained. Weapon used must be from the system store.]

“The system's store?” He muttered, wondering what that was.

Malik felt his neck. Her finger marks were on them. He whispered a prayer and gave a thumbs up to Nathan.

From the kit, Malik took a blade.

“What's that for?” Nathan asked.

“For their fangs. There's money in them.” He replied and took out her fangs.

“That's... That's a real vampire isn't it?" Nathan pointed out with a trembling voice. He couldn't believe his eyes.

“Yeah! On my first day I pissed myself.” Nathan confessed.

“We have to get out of here and find the exit.” Malik informed.

“Exit? I thought we came in through the wall...” By the time he looked back, the portal was gone. He gulped.

“Yeah! The exit portal is usually at a different location.” Malik disclosed. “We can't stay here any longer. More of them might be on their way.”

“There's more of them?” Nathan widened his gaze at that information.

Malik held firmly to his blade while he paced gently to the door. “Stay close.” He beckoned to Nathan.

“How do we find this exit?” Nathan asked while he followed Malik steps.

Just then, the screen only him could see revealed the location.

[Exit: Fifth floor. Vampire's leader domain]

He gulped. He didn't look confused or shocked like when he started receiving these messages.

Now he knows that it's like an assistance to him. But what he doesn't understand is why only he can see it?

Perhaps, the others too have one of them. Or perhaps, Don had put it out to help him in the raid.

He couldn't say for sure which was which. But he plans to use it wisely since he's determined to leave the hotel.

“Let's go!” Malik beckoned in a whisper and walked out of rushed out of the room.

Nathan went after him, exhibiting the same silence race.

They got to the elevator and Malik pressed the first floor.

“No.” Nathan changed it to the fifth floor.

“What! Exits are usually on the first floor you know?” Malik imposed.

“Well... I have a strong feeling about this one.” Nathan stated, heaving a sigh of relief.

Malik held tight to his blade. His hand sweaty. He bowed his head and whispered a prayer.

“I'm only left with a bullet. How do we kill them if they're much?”

“We fight them.” Malik replied Nathan's question.

“Uh...” Nathan mumbled.

“Dude. Don't tell me you have no fighting experience? Why'd Don hire you?”

“Because I owe him money?”

“Fear point. Don doesn't care about anyone. You getting through that portal is enough to pay him.” Malik said keeping his eyes at the door as the elevator goes down.

“What does that mean?” Nathan questioned.

“Don't tell anyone this, but I heard from senior hunters that Don has got wealthy sponsors. All he does to get paid is get hunters to work.” Malik explained.

“Oh!” Nathan stated. Scratching his head.

“You know what this means right?” Malik turned to him.

“No. What does it mean?” Nathan's eyes ravelled around. He was tensed.

“It means you...”

The elevator chimes open. It had to stop at the first floor first. Vampires were there, but non paid attention to them.

That was the entrance of the hotel. Everything felt naturally like a usual human's hotel.

There was a receptionist too.

One of them got in the elevator going to the 7th floor.

The air around the both men were tensed as the old vampire got into the elevator.

Her eyes looked a bit scary and she stared at them as though suspecting they were strangers.

They waited for the elevator to close up again and then Malik stabbed her to death.

Her blood sprinkled upon their faces and stained their clothes.

While taking out her teeth, Nathan asked Malik to complete what he was going to say earlier.

“Yeah! What I was saying is that you have no rank yet.”

“Rank?” Nathan echoed as a question.

“Gosh! There's a lot you have to learn.” Malik looked pissed answering Nathan's persisting questions.

Usually, Don hands over files to hunters that explained everything about ranks and portals.

He wondered why he didn't give any to Nathan though?

“Listen attentively okay? There are six ranks in the hunter's verse. 'F' rank is the last rank. You can call it the fuck ass rank. It's where I belong. Newbies who have been to one or two raids. Most say they're unqualified and deserve to only support higher ranks in carrying their kits.” Malik spat, feeling irritated by it.

“There's an 'E' rank. They're advanced 'F' ranks who have learned certain skills and have participated in ten successful raids at least. Gosh! I can't wait to get there at least.”

“How many raids have you been too now?” Nathan got interested.

“This is my third. And soon I'll be counting ten.” He smiled with confidence.

The elevator chimes open.

Nathan had a lot of questions to ask, although they have to focus on what matters first. Getting to the exit.

As the elevator opens wide, they are met with a vampire army in guard as though waiting for their arrival.

Beneath few of the vampires are the heads of the team they had come with earlier. Although, they did notice one alive among the vampire army. He was also a vampire now.

Malik recognized him.

He was supposed to be his roommate, but he rejected Malik because he believed Malik couldn't live up to his standard.

“What did you say about your intuition of the fifth floor again?” Malik muttered with a caricature voice.

  • Twenty: Unending Dune

Evening came slowly over the dunes, the way it always did in a place with no mercy left to give. The sky bled from gold to a deep, bruised orange, and then to a purple so dark it looked like the color of a wound. Nathan lay half-buried in the sand, watching that color spread across the horizon, and for a moment it was almost beautiful enough to make him forget where he was. Almost. He didn't know how long ago the portal had taken him. He remembered the serpents, the screaming, Dan's voice telling him to run before the ground had simply opened beneath him and swallowed him whole. There had been no light this time, no gentle blue glow easing him through. Just darkness, and falling, and then heat — a heat so absolute it had felt like breathing fire before his eyes had even adjusted to the endless gold-brown of the dunes stretching in every direction. The forest had been hell, but at least the forest had shade. At least it had sound — the rustle of leaves, the distant calls of birds, so

  • Nineteen: The Battle In The Raid

The battle had turned into a nightmare none of them could have prepared for.The giant serpent creatures came from every direction at once, their massive bodies gliding through the trees like living shadows, silent one moment and lethal the next. Every time the hunters thought they had cornered one, another would appear behind them, fangs bared, as if the forest itself had turned against them. Screams echoed through the trees. Blood soaked into the dirt. Slowly, inevitably, the Savage Hunters were losing ground.Elena gritted her teeth and swung her sword at a serpent's arm, the blade biting deep enough to force the monster into a hissing retreat."Behind you!" Dan shouted. She ducked on instinct, and a claw sliced through the empty air where her head had been a heartbeat earlier. Not everyone was so lucky. One of the other hunters cried out as a serpent's tail coiled around his body and hauled him screaming into the darkness between the trees. His screams lasted only a few seconds

  • Eighteen: The System's Deadly Task

Nathan tumbled through the shimmering rift, the invisible portal spitting him out like discarded refuse. The system had taken him into it's belly once he activated 'proceed task'.He hit the scorching sand with a thud, rolling several meters before skidding to a halt. The air burns mercilessly hot like furnace, baking his skin instantly.Sands clung to his sweaty face. "What the hell?" he gasped, pushing himself up on trembling arms. His head hurt from the fall, and the world seem to spin in a haze of golden dunes stretching endlessly under a blinding sun. No trees, no buildings, just waves of heat-distorted horizon. It was a desert, one that seems to have no end.SYSTEM NOTIFICATION[Task: Survive the eternal sands and claim Oasis core. Failure to perform inflict great fatigue.]“This is more like a punishment than a task.” Nathan complained. He blinked hard, swiping out the sands off his faceThe words materialized in his vision like augmented reality overlays, glowing blue and

The hunters stood at alert. Their hands tightening upon their rifles, blade and other weapons they had brought for the mission.Their eyes were focused in the thick greens as they waited for the next attack. The hunters were certain that the snake creature was going to return. They could even hear creepy sounds too.The sounds seemed to be coming from all angles, making them confused, if they were more than one snake creature.Shadows pooled in hollows between the roots, and faint trails of mist clung to the low spots which gave hint at unseen streams or bogs nearby. Still yet, that wasn't enough to detect the creature. In fact, it only confused the hunters the more. The undergrowth was a chaotic labyrinth filled with ferns unfurled like emerald feathers at every step, thorny brambles snagged at boots. Many of the Savage hunters complained how this was only their first raid and wished to abandon it.If only they had a second chance right this moment, they'll reject whatever money was

  • Sixteen: The Weird Portal

They entered a large forest and the energy was in different level. Most hunters confirmed that it was mixed with both high and low energy. The hunters couldn't quite tell what demons they were going to encounter, but Nathan's system has given him a hint.[Portal of five creatures: The drastic wolves, Giant scorpions, Serpent- man, Devil bees and ghost ants].Nathan gulped. From their names, he could imagine what they were. The drastic wolves, he imagined them as rigorous wolves who would stop at nothing but to tear open their enemy. For the giant scorpion, he hope not to encounter such a creature. The smaller ones alone are enough to creep out a person, but a giant scorpion is dreadful. The name serpent-man got him puzzled for a moment. Is he a half man half snake, or his a man with snakes? He thought about it.Devil bees sounded like a killer name and ghost ants was totally unimaginable.A reminder of his fatigue appeared on the screen. He groans and ignores it. But he won't be able

  • Fifteen: Strange

The portal appeared all of a sudden, right in the center of the stadium. Reports from journalists stated that, a match was ongoing before the portal's appearance. Few footballers got stuck inside the portal eventually. They were four of them precisely. Nathan saw the hunters he had seen earlier at the Bureau still around at the premises. They had not gone into the portal. He thought some action should have began. Some other stranger hunters from different organizations were also present. A lot of them. They all seem to be engaged in an argument. Their murmurs revealed complains, detest and anger. Nathan looked around for Jeremy but could not find him nearby. Instead, he finds Elena beside him like a bodyguard. There's no point in asking her what she wants because she'll probably say: to protect him. And if he asked her to let him be, she'll probably say she has to repay back his favour first. Such a strange lady. He thought. “Hey! What is going on here?" He asked a person close by.
