The world would forever trample upon the weak, disregard the poor and cast aside the broken. Nathan learned that lesson the hard way, bleeding out on the cold floor, begging for a love that had abandoned him and wishing for wealth with nothing but a name no one respected. But ashes don’t stay silent forever. When betrayal strips him of everything and leaves him with only rage and a loaded gun, Nathan stops running. He steps into the shadows he has always been afraid of. Now, he is back as a different man. They called him broken. Now they call him boss. They looked past him before. Now they bow when he enters the room.

Chapter 1

One: The Man Nobody Sees

Sweat dripped from his skin, while his legs shook rapidly underneath the table.

His heart made a little prayer, that the man before him considers his plea for money.

The man was in a fine tailored suit with colourless glasses on. He was in his late 40s.

His eyes were fixed on his laptop and didn't raise his head once to peak at Nathan.

His phone beeps a call, startling him almost immediately.

Deepening his hand into his pocket, he took out the phone.

His weary eyes rose in high alert as he read the name on the pop-up screen: The Don.

He swallowed and ignores the call.

"Please sir, I beg you to recondition. I promise, I'll pay you back the money." The young man crossed his fingers together, pulling closer to the table that separated them.

"This is an organization not a charity center. Don't think it's because you're dating my daughter, you can come here and demand money from me. I've already told her how useless you are, I wonder why she's still under that roof!" The man spoke with a raised voice.

Nathan looked into his eyes, hoping the man who happens to be his girlfriend's father, could help him out at least.

"You should leave now, they're other clients waiting outside the door." He alerted Nathan and focused back on his laptop.

Nathan pulled back from the chair, standing up on his feet.

"BAM!" He hits the table hard enough to make it echo.

Mr. Edgar's glasses slipped to his nose. "What the heck!"

"Mark my words." Nathan points his finger at him. "I'll be so rich...so rich that you'll beg me to marry your daughter."

Mr. Edgar bursted into laughter immediately Nathan finished his words.

He laughed until his heart content.

"Just when are you going to achieve that huh? After you're done paying the numerous debts you owe?" He mocked Nathan and resumed laughing at him.

If there was anything Nathan regretted coming to Edgar's office for, it's for the fact he told him about his debt.

Nathan took his leave immediately.

The young man appeared on the street.

Hands stuck in the pocket of his hoodie, while the hood covered his head and eyes.

His eyes were lowered as he walked gently.

Pain and regret filled his heart.

He shouldn't have taken the favor from him—the Don. He thought.

His phone rings.

"Speak of the devil." He grit. His veins flushing with anger.

He smashed the phone on the ground and put back his hands into his pockets.

He walks calculatedly. A gentle pace that reveals anxiety.

'The Don will kill me if he finds me.' his mind feared.

He was beginning to go mad publicly. Talking to himself, pinching and hitting himself quite hard.

Anyone who spots him would actually mistake him for a psycho.

His mind seemed to conjure thoughts about his failure over the years.

After graduating from middle school, he thought he could have a life of fulfillment.

Satisfaction was all he craved for when he borrowed money from the Don to sort himself and Elsosa out.

He had signed a deal with Don to work for him inorder to settle for the debt, but he never knew the job was to murder targeted civilians.

Nathan couldn't do it, so he quit.

But Don being vicious demanded his money immediately.

He promised to pay the money within a week which two weeks has even passed.

He wasn't always this poor.

He grew up in a normal home like everyone else.

But his life began to crumble when his mother died and his father took another wife.

She was mean to him, she'd let him out in the cold just because her son Liam wants it.

They made Nathan's life miserable.

It was unbearable for him.

He served like a servant in his own house.

The poor Nathan could no longer take it.

He decided to report to his father, believing that he'll do something about it.

Unfortunately, his father cussed him, accusing him of lying about his lovely wife and son.

Ronald, sent his son Nathan away to his brother's house.

Nathan was heartbroken with grief.

If only his mother were alive, maybe his life would still be perfect.

His uncle's place was no better place to leave.

He had different women trooping in each day and didn't waste the slightest opportunity to assault Nathan.

His uncle had nothing. Nothing to give. His possession was stolen by the whores he brought into his roof.

One day when he realized how much he had lost, he blamed it upon Nathan.

He would have whipped Nathan, if he had ran away.

His uncle told him never to return.

He threw himself to the streets, begging for bread and penny.

He hardly got any in a day.

He didn't give up still. He tried sorting out a job.

No one was willing to employ an unqualified. He wasn't even done with highschool.

Ever since he left home, he dropped out of highschool.

He met Elsosa in his lowliest state, when he was about to take his life.

She was kind to him first.

He was on the open rooftop of a tall building, about to jump down when she stopped by.

She was drinking booze and seemed to care less.

"You know, many would say that death ends it all—your troubles. But believe me, hell is worse." Those were her first words to him.

It seemed to show him the truth about life.

"Pick another roof to die, not this one." That was her second word.

Although harsh, but it seemed like though she don't want to wake up seeing my

his smashed body on the ground.

She threw her bottle of booze to him. Not caring if he was going to catch it or not.

He caught the bottle with both hands, although a lot of it spilled.

"There's so much to live for, why throw the opportunity away?" She asked tilting her head to a corner.

He watched as her hair fell by the corner.

His weary eyes locked unto hers.

Something spring inside of him, something bright like hope.

It was at that moment, he knew she was the one. The missing piece that he needed to climb high.
