Evening came slowly over the dunes, the way it always did in a place with no mercy left to give.The sky bled from gold to a deep, bruised orange, and then to a purple so dark it looked like the color of a wound. Nathan lay half-buried in the sand, watching that color spread across the horizon, and for a moment it was almost beautiful enough to make him forget where he was. Almost.He didn't know how long ago the portal had taken him. The battle had turned into a nightmare none of them could have prepared for.The giant serpent creatures came from every direction at once, their massive bodies gliding through the trees like living shadows, silent one moment and lethal the next. Every time the hunters thought they had cornered one, another would appear behind them, fangs bared, as if the forest itself had turned against them. Screams echoed through the trees. Blood soaked into the dirt. Slowly, inevitably, the Savage Hunters were losing ground.Elena gritted her teeth and swung her sword at a serpent's arm, the blade biting deep enough to force the monster into a hissing retreat."Behind you!" Nathan tumbled through the shimmering rift, the invisible portal spitting him out like discarded refuse. The hunters stood at alert. Their hands tightening upon their rifles, blade and other weapons they had brought for the mission.Their eyes were focused in the thick greens as they waited for the next attack.The hunters were certain that the snake creature was going to return. They could even hear creepy sounds too.The sounds seemed to be coming from all angles, making them confused, if they were more than one snake creature.Shadows pooled in hollows between the roots, and faint trails of mist clung to the low spots which gave hint at unseen streams or bogs nearby.
