A massive crack splits the concrete ceiling right down the middle, showering the crowded bunker with sharp gray rocks and choking dust.

I grab Ifeoma by the waist and pull her out of the path of a falling steel beam that slams into the floor where she was standing a second ago. The alarms are blaring so loud they drown out the shouts of the resistance fighters scrambling for cover around us.

"The breaching unit has cut through the main vault!" Kade calls out, running over from the communication console with a rifle in his hands. "Zane’s elite troops are dropping through the breach right now!"

Before anyone can fire a shot, a blinding white flash tears through the center of the bunker roof. Chunks of metal and concrete blow outward in all directions as three heavy thermal pods drop straight down from the surface, landing hard on the concrete floor with deafening metallic crashes.

The hatch of the middle pod blows off with a loud pop, and armed enforcers in sleek white armor pour out, their energy rifles raised and firing instantly.

Bullets and energy bolts light up the dark underground chamber. Resistance fighters scatter behind crates and concrete pillars, returning fire with everything they have.

"We cannot hold this room if they bring down the lower support columns!" Zara Bello says, firing her weapon over the top of a overturned metal desk. She turns to me, her eyes sharp and focused. "Simeon, you need to clear the main tunnel exit in the back. It is our only way out of this trap."

I nod, letting the black fire surge across my hands in a bright, heated rush. "Ifeoma, stay close to Zara Bello. Keep the backup drive safe."

"I am not hiding behind anyone," Ifeoma replies, pulling a small energy pistol from her tactical belt and checking the charge with practiced speed. "If they want this data drive, they have to get past both of us."

I do not argue with her. I know her mind is already three steps ahead of the enemy, calculating how to turn their attack into our advantage. That is what makes her dangerous, and that is why we survive.

I charge straight toward the front thermal pod where three enforcers are laying down heavy suppression fire against our lines.

The lead enforcer spots me coming and swings his rifle around, but I move faster. I duck beneath his line of fire, slide across the dusty floor, and slam my burning fist directly into the chest plate of his armor. The black fire melts the metal instantly, sending the soldier flying backward into his squadmates.

The other two enforcers try to back away, but I sweep my leg out, knocking them both to the ground before they can adjust their aim.

More enforcers keep pouring out of the remaining pods, led by a tall officer wearing a gold-trimmed helmet. He points his plasma sword directly at me.

"Target the boy with the black fire!" the officer commands his troops. "General Zane wants him alive, but nobody else!"

A dozen energy rifles pivot toward me all at once.

Before they can pull their triggers, a loud explosion rocks the far side of the bunker. The heavy steel blast doors at the back of the tunnel blow inward, filling the air with thick gray smoke.

Through the clearing smoke, a second group of fighters surges into the bunker—not enforcers, but heavily armed recruits from the outer slums, answering the broadcast we sent from the capital tower.

"For the true world!" a loud voice shouts from the front of the new arrivals.

The battle turns into absolute chaos. Enforcers and slum fighters clash in brutal hand-to-hand combat across the room. The sound of shouting, metal clashing, and energy fire echoes endlessly off the concrete walls.

I fight my way through the middle of the room, cutting down the enforcers blocking the path to the main control panel. My arms ache from the constant use of the dark fire, but I refuse to stop. Every step forward brings us closer to breaking the council's grip on the city once and for all.

I reach the control panel where Kade is desperately trying to override the bunker's emergency lockdown system.

"The main lift is offline!" Kade says, slamming his hand against the unresponsive keyboard. "Zane's tech team has locked us out from the surface!"

Ifeoma runs up beside us, pushing past a falling wire. She looks at the screen for barely two seconds before her expression hardens. "They did not just lock the lift. They rigged the entire lower foundation with a delayed charge."

"How much time do we have?" I ask, my heart pounding against my ribs.

"Less than two minutes before this entire bunker turns into a crater," Ifeoma answers, her fingers flying across a secondary terminal. "The only way out is the old drainage pipe leading down to the underground river. But it is sealed behind a high-security biometric vault door."

"Then we open it," I say.

I step up to the heavy steel vault door at the end of the maintenance hallway. I press my hands flat against the cold metal surface, closing my eyes and letting the black fire gather deep inside my chest.

"Simeon, the door is reinforced with an energy dampener," Kade warns, stepping back. "You cannot burn through it manually without frying yourself."

I do not answer him. I think of the slums where I grew up. I think of the fake memories, the lies, the parents I never truly knew, and the cold, unfeeling faces of the council members sitting in their high towers above the clouds.

The black fire flares up from my skin, turning blindingly bright, hot enough to make the air shimmer and warp around my hands.

I scream, putting every ounce of my strength, my pain, and my fury into one massive push against the steel door.

The metal groans loudly, turning white-hot under my palms. Sparks fly in every direction as the locking mechanisms melt away like wax.

With a deafening crash, the heavy vault door blows inward, flying off its hinges and splashing down into the dark water of the drainage tunnel beyond.

"The path is open!" I call out over the ringing in my ears.

"Move, move, move!" Ifeoma shouts, directing the remaining resistance fighters toward the open tunnel.

Kade and Zara Bello push the last of the wounded fighters through the opening, covering our rear as the enforcers regroup on the other side of the bunker.

I stand at the edge of the open drainage tunnel, waiting for Ifeoma to cross. She steps up beside me, her hand brushing against mine.

Before either of us can take a step into the tunnel, a bright red laser dot appears right on Ifeoma's chest.

I turn around just in time to see General Zane standing at the top of the ruined bunker stairs, holding a heavy sniper rifle with a cold, dead smile on his face.

"End of the line, nephew," Zane's voice echoes through the smoky room.

A piercing red alarm siren cuts through the amphitheater, flashing emergency lights across the faces of the terrified council members.I do not look back at General Zane or the white-armored tribunal soldiers blocking the exit. My eyes stay fixed on the giant main screen where Ifeoma is typing at incredible speed. The orbital defense system countdown ticks down rapidly, and the crosshairs on the display lock directly onto our position inside the tower."They are routing the planetary strike weapon right to this building," Ifeoma says, her voice completely steady even as her fingers dance across the holographic keyboard. "The orbital cannon takes thirty seconds to charge. If we do not break out of this floor right now, we will be vaporized along with every council member in this room."Zane lowers his plasma blade, a

His grey eyes widen in pure disbelief as he looks past the rows of seated leaders and sees me standing at the entrance. My hands burn with bright, roaring black fire, casting harsh shadows across the polished marble floor."How are you out of the containment cell?" Zane demands, his voice booming across the massive hall. "The security grid should have fried your nervous system!"I step forward into the room, my boots striking the floor with a heavy, deliberate sound. "Your security grid is built on lies, Zane. Just like your entire council."Beside me, Ifeoma moves fast.

Across from me, Ifeoma sits on a steel crate, her face pale in the dim light, yet her eyes remain sharp and completely focused."Do not waste your energy fighting the bars directly," Ifeoma says quietly, her voice steady. "They are hooked straight into the tower's main power grid. Every time you touch them, the system drains your strength."I push myself up to my feet, rubbing my stinging palms. "We cannot just sit here and wait for General Zane to strip our code. In one hour, the high council convenes, and they will wipe out the enti

We are no longer inside the simulation sandbox, and we are no longer floating in the grey digital code of the upper sector. We are inside the real world."Simeon," Ifeoma coughs, rolling over onto her side beside me. She pushes herself up on her hands, shaking her head as she tries to clear her vision. Her sharp eyes immediately scan our surroundings. "We made it through the portal bridge."I push myself up to my fe
