A blinding flash of white light tears through my eyes, and the deafening roar of the digital void vanishes into complete silence.
I hit the cold, hard steel floor hard, the breath knocking completely out of my lungs. The air here does not smell like ozone, burnt plastic, or rusted pipes. It smells like sharp winter frost, high-grade fuel, and polished chrome. We are no longer inside the simulation sandbox, and we are no longer floating in the grey digital code of the upper sector.
We are inside the real world.
"Simeon," Ifeoma coughs, rolling over onto her side beside me. She pushes herself up on her hands, shaking her head as she tries to clear her vision. Her sharp eyes immediately scan our surroundings. "We made it through the portal bridge."
I push myself up to my feet, testing my limbs. My shoulders ache where the bullet hit back in the tower, but the black fire under my skin is still there, warm and ready.
We are standing inside a massive, circular observation deck at the very top of a towering skyscraper that pierces the heavy clouds of the capital district. Massive floor-to-ceiling windows wrap completely around the room, showing a breathtaking view of the real Neo-Chicago spread out below us. Unlike the simulated version, this city is alive, massive, and terrifyingly real. Thousands of flying transit vehicles weave between towering glass skyscrapers that glow with bright commercial screens.
But we are not alone.
Heavy steel doors on the far side of the observation deck slide open with a sharp hiss. A dozen elite guards march into the room in formation. They wear sleek black armor stamped with the gold crest of the supreme council, and they carry advanced energy rifles pointed straight at our heads.
Stepping out from the center of the guard unit is a tall, broad-shouldered man with a long scar across his jaw and cold, grey eyes. He wears a heavy military coat, and in his right hand, he carries a massive plasma blade that pulses with deadly blue light.
General Zane.
"Welcome to the real capital, nephew," Zane says, his voice deep, rough, and dripping with mockery. He stops a few feet away, looking me up and down as if I were a bug under his boot. "Your father thought he could hide you in a low-level sandbox simulation in the slums. He thought you would live out a safe, ignorant life as a nobody."
I clench my fists, feeling the black fire flare up across my knuckles. "He hid me because people like you slaughtered my family to steal control of the core."
Zane laughs, a harsh sound that echoes off the glass walls. "We did not just steal control, boy. We built this city on the ashes of your father's weak ideals. Equality is a sickness. Power belongs to those who take it."
Ifeoma shifts slightly beside me, her hand slipping down toward her tactical belt where she keeps her emergency tools. She does not look at Zane; her eyes are locked on the control panel behind him, calculating escape routes and system overrides.
"You talk about power, Zane," Ifeoma says smoothly, her tone completely calm and steady. "Yet you brought a single guard unit to stop the only bloodline that can unlock the master firewall. Are you arrogant, or just stupid?"
Zane’s smile vanishes instantly. His grey eyes snap over to Ifeoma, narrowing with cold fury. "Watch your tongue, girl. You are standing in the highest security zone in the entire world. A word from me, and my guards turn you both into ash."
"Try it," I challenge, stepping forward so I stand directly between Zane and Ifeoma.
I raise my right hand, letting the dark flames roar to life, casting flickering shadows against the polished chrome floor. The heat radiates outward, making the air shimmer.
Zane does not flinch. Instead, a cruel, satisfied grin spreads across his scarred face. He raises his heavy plasma blade, pointing the glowing tip straight at my chest.
"I was hoping you would fight back," Zane says quietly.
Before I can move, the floor beneath our feet suddenly drops open.
Ifeoma gasps as a massive square section of the chrome flooring sinks downward into a hidden chamber, breaking our footing. We tumble backward, sliding down a steep, slick metal chute into the dark core of the building before we can catch ourselves.
We crash hard onto a cold metal platform deep inside the tower's lower sub-levels.
I push myself up quickly, looking around. We are trapped inside a massive, circular containment cell enclosed by thick bars of blue energy. The air is freezing cold, and the walls hum with heavy electrical current.
Through the glowing energy bars, General Zane looks down at us from the upper walkway, leaning casually against the railing.
"Enjoy your new cell," Zane calls down, his voice echoing through the empty chamber. "In one hour, the high council convenes to strip your bloodline code permanently. And you will watch as we execute every single member of the underground resistance."

The Orbital Target
A piercing red alarm siren cuts through the amphitheater, flashing emergency lights across the faces of the terrified council members.I do not look back at General Zane or the white-armored tribunal soldiers blocking the exit. My eyes stay fixed on the giant main screen where Ifeoma is typing at incredible speed. The orbital defense system countdown ticks down rapidly, and the crosshairs on the display lock directly onto our position inside the tower."They are routing the planetary strike weapon right to this building," Ifeoma says, her voice completely steady even as her fingers dance across the holographic keyboard. "The orbital cannon takes thirty seconds to charge. If we do not break out of this floor right now, we will be vaporized along with every council member in this room."Zane lowers his plasma blade, a
The Amphitheater Trap
A loud gasp echoes through the grand amphitheater as every high council member turns their head toward the open bronze doors.General Zane stops mid-sentence, his heavy plasma blade hovering in the air. His grey eyes widen in pure disbelief as he looks past the rows of seated leaders and sees me standing at the entrance. My hands burn with bright, roaring black fire, casting harsh shadows across the polished marble floor."How are you out of the containment cell?" Zane demands, his voice booming across the massive hall. "The security grid should have fried your nervous system!"I step forward into the room, my boots striking the floor with a heavy, deliberate sound. "Your security grid is built on lies, Zane. Just like your entire council."Beside me, Ifeoma moves fast.
The Price of Freedom
A high-voltage spark snaps against the blue energy bars, stinging my skin and lighting up the dark, freezing sub-level cell.I press my hands against the glowing barrier, but the electric shock throws me backward onto the cold metal floor. The smell of burnt ozone fills the small cage. Across from me, Ifeoma sits on a steel crate, her face pale in the dim light, yet her eyes remain sharp and completely focused."Do not waste your energy fighting the bars directly," Ifeoma says quietly, her voice steady. "They are hooked straight into the tower's main power grid. Every time you touch them, the system drains your strength."I push myself up to my feet, rubbing my stinging palms. "We cannot just sit here and wait for General Zane to strip our code. In one hour, the high council convenes, and they will wipe out the enti

The Fall of the Sky
A high-voltage energy bolt tears through the open air, grazing my left shoulder and scorching the metal of the aircraft ramp.I pull Ifeoma hard against my side, shielding her with my body as the black fire flares up across my skin. The world around us is completely gone. There are no more city streets, no more underground tunnels, and no more glass-walled towers. Beyond the Glass Wall
A giant digital eye stares down from the fractured sky, blinking with cold white light.I do not look away. The glass window behind Kanmi shatters completely, blowing sharp pieces across the floor as the wind from the outside world rushes in. The city of Neo-Chicago is folding up like paper, turning into long lines of green computer code that drift away into nothingness.Kanmi stumbles back against the main console, his face pale and twisted in disbelief. The digital eye in the sky pulses with a deep, rhythmic hum that vibrates right through my chest."You are too late, Simeon," Kanmi says, coughing as he tries to stand straight. "That eye is not part of the simulation. It is the outer overseer. The moment the simulation crashes, the real world firewall activates. You cannot escape a cage if the entire planet is a prison."Ifeoma steps up beside me, her expression completely calm despite the chaos. She looks at the giant eye in the sky, then down at the data drive in her hand. Her fin
