A high-voltage spark snaps against the blue energy bars, stinging my skin and lighting up the dark, freezing sub-level cell.

I press my hands against the glowing barrier, but the electric shock throws me backward onto the cold metal floor. The smell of burnt ozone fills the small cage. Across from me, Ifeoma sits on a steel crate, her face pale in the dim light, yet her eyes remain sharp and completely focused.

"Do not waste your energy fighting the bars directly," Ifeoma says quietly, her voice steady. "They are hooked straight into the tower's main power grid. Every time you touch them, the system drains your strength."

I push myself up to my feet, rubbing my stinging palms. "We cannot just sit here and wait for General Zane to strip our code. In one hour, the high council convenes, and they will wipe out the entire underground resistance."

"I am not waiting," Ifeoma replies. A small, cunning smile touches the corners of her mouth. She reaches into the lining of her jacket and pulls out a tiny, modified circuit chip that she managed to hide during our capture. "While Zane was busy giving his speech upstairs, I managed to tap into the cell's local communication relay."

I walk over to stand beside her, looking down at the small chip. "What can that do?"

"It cannot open the main door," Ifeoma explains, her fingers turning the chip over carefully. "The security protocol requires a direct biometric override from a high-ranking council member. But it can send a distress signal to someone on the outside."

"Who?" I ask. "Kade and the rest of the resistance cell are cut off in the lower sector."

"Not all of them," Ifeoma says, her eyes narrowing with calculated intent. "Remember Kade said we have an ally in the outer sector? Someone high up enough in the logistics division to bypass the capital defense grid."

Before I can ask who she means, the heavy iron door at the end of the sub-level hallway opens with a loud, metallic clank.

Footsteps echo heavily against the concrete floor. A single figure walks down the hall, wearing a long black military coat and a silver mask that hides the upper half of their face. The guard stops just outside our containment cell, looking at us through the blue energy bars.

"You are wasting your time," a smooth, calm voice speaks from behind the mask. "General Zane has doubled the guard patrols on every level. No one is getting out of this sector alive."

I step close to the barrier, my eyes narrowing. "Who are you?"

The masked figure reaches up, unbuckles the strap, and pulls the silver mask off.

It is a woman with sharp, dark eyes and a fierce expression that matches Ifeoma's own unyielding spirit. She looks at me, then glances quickly at Ifeoma.

"My name is Zara Bello," she says quietly.

I stare at her in complete shock. "You are one of the high council leaders. Why are you helping us?"

"I am helping myself," Zara Bello replies, stepping closer to the energy bars. She pulls a heavy black data key from her pocket and presses it into a hidden slot on the wall panel. "General Zane killed my brother last year under the guise of a system error. The council is rotting from the inside, and I am done following orders from murderers."

With a loud hiss, the blue energy bars flicker and shut off completely. The containment cell is open.

I step out of the cell, my hands instantly flaring with dark fire as a precaution. "How do we know this is not a trap?"

"Because if I wanted you dead, I would have left you in the cell," Zara Bello says flatly, tossing a heavy tactical belt filled with weapons and ammunition onto the floor near Ifeoma. "Zane is hosting the high council meeting right now in the central amphitheater on the top floor. All the faction leaders are gathered in one room."

Ifeoma picks up the tactical belt, strapping it around her waist with practiced ease. A dangerous, confident look settles over her face. "All the faction leaders in one room? That means we do not have to hunt them down one by one."

"Exactly," Zara Bello confirms. "If we hit the amphitheater now, we can take control of the master broadcast system and transmit the truth about your parents' research to every screen in the city."

I look at Ifeoma, then at Zara Bello. The path ahead is clear, steep, and deadly. But there is no turning back now.

"Let's crash the meeting," I say.

We move fast down the sub-level corridor, our boots striking the metal floor in a steady rhythm. Zara Bello leads the way through the secure maintenance tunnels, bypassing the heavy guard checkpoints.

We reach the heavy bronze doors of the central amphitheater within ten minutes. Faint voices echo from the other side. The high council meeting has already begun.

Zara Bello presses her hand against the biometric scanner beside the door. The green light flashes, and the heavy bronze doors slowly begin to swing inward.

Through the opening gap, we see General Zane standing at the front of a massive, crowded hall filled with elite council members. On the giant screen behind him, a countdown timer ticks down the final minutes before the total wipe of the underground resistance.

Zane raises his hand to speak, but before he can utter a word, I step through the open doors into the hall, my hands blazing with bright, roaring black fire.
