Nobody spoke for a long moment after Mireth said it, the candle between us guttering low in a draft none of us could feel, dust motes turning slow overhead in whatever thin light still reached that high into the shelves.

She closed the ledger slowly, as if giving the room time to absorb what she'd said. "The capital," Lyra said finally, flat. "You want us to walk into the one city on this continent where every face belongs to someone who already thinks Aiden is dead."

"I want nothing," Mireth s

  • Chapter 56: What Kallum Wants

"I won't promise you I'll contest every bargain the Abyss has ever struck," I said, choosing honesty over the kind of careful diplomacy I didn't yet have the experience to fake convincingly. "I don't know the full shape of what I'm carrying yet. I know what happened to my family. I don't know what happened to whoever the Abyss made desperate promises to.""A fair answer," Kallum said, "though not the one my court would prefer to hear." The cavern's walls flickered once, flame-shapes rippling through stone, as though the very ground were listening for his reply."What would your court prefer?""Assurance that your new authority stops precisely at the Choir's doorstep. That whatever justice you intend to pursue remains conveniently focused on the power that wronged you, and leaves the rest of us to our own arrangements undisturbed." Something in Kallum's burning eyes sharpened, old and calculating despite the honesty in his tone. "I will not insult you by pretending that isn't what half

  • Chapter 55: The Meeting I Couldn't Refuse

"A meeting," I repeated, testing the word for whatever trap might be hiding beneath it. "With whom.""Someone considerably more patient than I am, and considerably less inclined to soften difficult truths for mortal comfort." The Abyss agent's expression had gone carefully neutral, the easy amusement I'd grown almost used to entirely absent now. "A demon king, Mr. Draven. One who has held interest in this covenant's instability since long before you were born, and who will not be satisfied hearing secondhand what happened in this chamber tonight."Lyra's hand tightened on my arm. "You're taking him to the Abyss.""Not the Abyss itself. That would require considerably more preparation than tonight allows, and frankly, Miss Voss, I doubt any of you would survive the crossing undefended." He glanced toward the chamber's edge, toward shadows that seemed, now that I looked more carefully, slightly deeper than ordinary darkness should allow. "There are liminal places. Borders thin enough to

  • Chapter 54: What I Carry Now

The light didn't simply fade. It settled, sinking into my chest the way the System's first binding had, the chamber's cold air suddenly thick enough to taste, except this time I was conscious for every second of it, feeling something ancient and vast fold itself down into a shape small enough to live inside one mortal body without tearing it apart.I didn't black out. I wished, halfway through, that I had. When it finally stilled, I was on my knees on the chamber's stone floor, not from weakness this time but from the sheer gravity of what had just settled into me, Lyra's hands gripping my shoulders, Nessa's voice calling my name from somewhere that sounded very far away and very close at the same time."Aiden." Her voice cracked on the second syllable. "Say something. Please.""I'm here," I managed, and found my own voice carried a resonance it hadn't held before, faint but unmistakable, like a single note struck beneath everything else I said. "I'm still me. I think."The panel flic

  • Chapter 53: Two Verdicts

The hall of scales dissolved around me, and I came back to the chamber gasping, the cold white light giving way to the chamber's familiar dark, Nessa's arms the only thing keeping me upright as my legs buckled entirely this time, the double weight of two visions finally collecting its full cost."WE HAVE WEIGHED," the Choir said, its layered voice settling into something unnervingly calm, the agitation from moments before smoothed over into whatever passed, for something that old, as resolve. "THE DEBT WAS STRUCK UNDER DURESS. THAT MUCH YOUR ANSWER MADE UNDENIABLE. BUT DURESS DOES NOT UNMAKE A BARGAIN FREELY ENTERED, HOWEVER DESPERATE THE CIRCUMSTANCE. CORDELIA DRAVEN CHOSE. THE DEBT STANDS."My stomach dropped straight through the ancient floor."WE HAVE ALSO WEIGHED," the emissary said, its white light steady despite the Choir's verdict hanging cold in the air between us, "AND WE FIND DIFFERENTLY. A CHOICE MADE UNDER THE THREAT OF A PROVINCE'S ANNIHILATION IS NOT A CHOICE IN ANY MEA

  • Chapter 52: A God at the Threshold

The gold light released me all at once, and I staggered back into my own body, into the chamber, into Nessa's hands catching my shoulders before my knees fully buckled beneath me."Aiden." Her voice was tight with fear. "You were gone. Your eyes were open the whole time, but you weren't…""I'm here," I managed, though the words came out rough, my throat raw as though I'd been shouting across that burning field rather than simply speaking within it. "I saw her. Cordelia. I answered the question.""THE GROUND HAS RECORDED YOUR ANSWER," the Choir said, and for the first time since I'd heard that layered voice, it carried something unmistakably close to agitation, many voices speaking slightly out of step with each other, as though an argument I couldn't hear was unfolding beneath the words. "THE TRIAL IS NOT YET COMPLETE. A SECOND WITNESS MUST ALSO WEIGH THE ANSWER'S WEIGHT. THE COVENANT DEMANDS BALANCE.""A second witness," Vessa said slowly, reading from the grant's scroll with shaking

  • Chapter 51: The Contest Begins

The gold light at the chamber's center folded fully into shape now, not a figure exactly, but a suggestion of one, layered and translucent, a crowd of robed forms standing where a single witness should have been, faces lost in shifting shadow beneath hoods that moved independent of any wind."You came," I said, and was surprised to find my voice steady."WE TOLD YOU WE WOULD FIND YOU AGAIN." The layered voice filled the chamber without seeming to come from any single point within it. "WE DID NOT EXPECT TO FIND YOU HERE, INVOKING A CLAUSE EVEN OUR OWN RECORDS HAD NEARLY FORGOTTEN.""Provision the eleventh," Vessa said, stepping forward despite every instinct that must have told her to stay back, the grant's scroll held out like evidence in a courtroom. "A formal challenge, conducted on the original ground, witnessed by both binding parties. The covenant itself permits it.""THE COVENANT PERMITS MANY THINGS NO SOUL HAS EVER SURVIVED ATTEMPTING."** The Choir's attention shifted, I felt i
